Benoist Stehlin was a parisian builder in the mid 18th century, probably born in Germany. Only two of his harpsichords had survived: the Smithsonian Museum's one which was your model and the second on exhibition in Maurice Quentin Delatour Museum, Saint Quentin (the original San Quintin), Aisne - France often used for many recordings.

At last, an HONEST video taken in a REAL workshop. No bullshit, false props, etc. A sign of authenticity too, is the background music in the workshop ; not classical music, because manual workers are not encouraged to listen to it. It's usually girly magazines, Pop music, and in this case Country music. Don't get me wrong, I'm a cabinet maker myself, and I've lived and worked in Britain and France for thirty five years ; that's why I know what I'm talking about. I listen to, and play classical and Jazz, not Pop. I'll give my good friend David Ley a tinkle about this video. Thanks again for posting this very honest and simple video, because there's a lot of "delicately enshrined rubbish" out there. Just to end, I've been gross and vulgar on purpose, because the overly-dusty universe of the Harpsichord needs some of its false dust blown away. Today's musicians, especially the "period" instrument crowd, take themselves far too seriously. Most artists are narcissistic self-admirers. Just read up a good biography of Herr Bach, and you'll soon be brought down a pin or two. I would rather replace the word "artist" by "Servant of Art" (Serviteur de l'Art). The aforementioned used to sign his letters : "Your humble Servant, a man of little merit". So come down from cloud nine, smash your mirrors, and say a prayer to Johann every morning, eh. I liked the first player though ; those accelerando chords were quite exhilarating.
