It’s actually very funny to imagine that Count Dracula would have to keep up the illusion of welcoming Johnathan Harker to his castle by having to make a chicken dish. The visual of Dracula looking at a cook book and trying to measure out the correct amount of paprika and heavy cream is hilarious to think about. Even funnier that he finds the food of mortals utterly disgusting.

The most authentic film adaption of Dracula ever made... Louis Jordan really captures the essence of Count Dracula although many have criticised him for not being vicious or intense enough in some scenes. When you compare the acting and the accents to the 1994 Ford Coppola version, this is such a relief. Personally I would say that this adaption has the best Van Helsing and Renfield as well.

Jordan is definitely doing his own interpretation. The Count in the novel was a total weirdo, someone completely out of touch with humanity. Jordan's Count is far more charismatic.

@@ltrenthem I had much the same experience as yourself. I believe our PBS station (Seattle) played it two years in a row (1977-78, or 1978-79). By far the best adaptation of the novel. Suave, stunningly good looking, mannered - and every look in his eye indicates menace. Perfect. I wonder if Christoph Waltz studied this film. Jourdan didn’t need makeup or creepy music to make you feel uneasy. That relentless killer-wolf stare was enough. And note the hair on his palms - left over from his wolf version. The smile at the end was a Connery touch.

This is the most faithful to the book. There are some differences but not as many in most of the other versions. Dracula seduces with half truths and promises before he destroys, just like real evil does. Jourdan doesn't overplay this. His "children of the night" line is delicious. And of all the versions of Dracula, this is the one that stresses the war between good and evil, and the importance of the soul. At one point, Jourdan even verbally jousts about Christianity with Van Helsing.
@Lurvy196314 жыл бұрын
I agree that this was the most faithful version of Bram Stoker's novel. If only the old Hammer horror films made better use of Christopher Lee as Dracula, instead of limiting his screen time and abilities to be one of the better Draculas since Bela Lugosi. His performances as the evil count would have been something like what Louis Jordan delivered in this mini series. As the main character and not a supporting one.

Louis jourdan and Lugosi are my favorite counts but they're totally different. Louis jourdan is the aristocratic Dracula. this version seems more literary. This is indeed an excellent production, on all levels, especially the casting of all the characters. Jourdan just right for Dracula. As is Frank Finlay for Van Helsing. Susan Penhaligon makes a great Lucy Westenra and Judi Bowker an equally great Mina. Mark Burns is a very fine Dr John Seward. And Jack Shepherd is a superb Renfield, bug-eater(who hopes to progress to kittens!). Even Richard Barns as Quincy P. Holmewood has his moments (whoa their little lady, I sure hope that ain't the affect I'm always gonna have on ya!). Anne Queensbury is fine as Mrs Westenra. The rest of the cast is also excellent. But it's the leads of Jourdan and Finlay, as Dracula and Van Helsing, who realy impress the most. Irishman Bosco Hogan is also rather good as Johnathan Harker. And even the Counts three brides impress. Played by Sue Vanner, Susie Hickford and Belinda Muilduik. Gerald savory provides an intelligent, literate screenplay. And Philip Saville directs with verve and style. Morris Barry offers excellent production values. And Kenyon Emery's Roberts score is wonderful and fitting for the production. This is by far the best version of Dracula ever adapted from Stoker's 1897 masterpiece!! I have the dvd and it's great, but badley needs a blueray or 4k upgrade, with some half decent bonus material and perhaps a nice big thick booklet, or making - of book!! Anyone from the BBC reading this? 🤔 I'd give this production an impressive 1O out of 1O ... On every level. Absolutely superb and unbeatable!! 🙂✌️

I've said this before but I saw this in '77 and it was by far the most innovative ever. For example, the first to show him going down the castle wall head first. the problem is it was so slavishly immitated after that it loses some of its original punch. It was pretty mind boggling at the time. Even its intercutting real footage from the early twentieth century was somewhat copied later. I also thought Louis Jourdan had the right touch of aristocratic with commanding presence.

I absolutely love this version. it is bay far, the best adaptation of Stoker's novel. The only thing I had misgivings about was the relationship between Lucy & Mina. They were friends in the book and sisters in this one. Also, if I remember correctly, Lucy was engaged to Arthur and NOT Quincy, although Quincy dies heroically at the end of the book. The music is very erotic and seductive and the scene in the graveyard between Lucy and Dracula is almost like a hot sex scene. Very EROTIC

Dracula's english was too perfect for a Romanian who's trying to learn the language. Harker's script should have been edited by eliminating his questioning of Dracula about the coach driver, meals/servants.Hiddenscripts tend to lend a sense of intrigue/ involvement/thrill to the viewer and that scene took it away. The girls were never sisters, & Quincy P. Morris became Quincy P. Holmwood. Dracula was very physically transformative and I missed that BUT I STILL LOVED THIS VERSION; THANKS!V.SCARY

As dull and obane as the 1931 version. Sorry but as far as being gripping is concerned this definately falls very short. It really doesnt stand the test of time well at all. I tried watching it a couple of months back and was suprised I managed to even watch the first hour. It wouldnt even stand up as a stage version purely because there is no drama, no tension, no pace. The actors do not display any real communion, inner monologues, and just appear to move and speak lines because they were instructed to. That is a lifeless performance. Its known as robotic, branded acting. There was clearly no in depth exploration of character motivations beyond the confines of the script therefore the characters realities were very limited and had no truth or substance. The Frank Langella version was far more paced and dramatic than this. Dont blame the BBC budgets and effects of the time. Good acting and great direction is what makes a great film, the effects etc are just side dressing. I found the actor playing Dracula wooden and soulless. He didnt convince me he was four hundred years old at all, just another actor playing the lines and getting paid. Thats NOT acting. as my acting coaches and directors have always said...dont ACT it...BE it.
