I did some research and i can tell you one thing: it wasn't confusion. He suffers from svere mental illness, namely chronic depression. You only see the outside of him, but he was hurting all the time. So after his illness starts affecting his behavior, his wife separates because nick probably didn't want to get help or just couldn't and his wife couldn't take it anymore, which i can understand. Nobody is at fault here. It's just an illness. And the divorce just drove him over the edge and he completely broke down. Probably he felt so disgusted by himself that he just felt the need to transition and is now completely immersed in this third persona he created (nick and depression nick being the other 2) it's sad to see but nick probably doesn't seek the help he really should and thus any outside help would just isolate him even more (assuming he still has some close friends or relatives) i hope you understand my point, but i guess we both mourn the loss of a beloved KZbinr
