Draft Horse Logging-Working With the New Mare in the Woods

We leave the Dairy Farm and head to the big woods. Leonard has been working with the new Draft Horse Mare he bought and taking her out to the woods with his experienced Gelding, Stub. Leonard talks a bit about how he got Stoney and Stub, some of the bad habits the new team has, and the parts of the harness. Leonard also shares some of the things he does with his draft teams when breaking new horses. We finally head out and show Cookie and Stub working in some nasty brushy blow down areas. This is Cookie's 4th time in the woods and she is doing well.

Thank you for this. In about 1958 my Dad bought a spirited horse named Barney. Barney had a bad habit of biting and one day when I walked in front of him he grabbed me good and hard. That made my Dad upset and he talked to an old horse trader about what to do. My Dad then proceeded to walk past Barney a few times until Barney tried to grab him. Little did Barney know my Dad had a lit cigar hidden by his shoulder. Barney bit into that lit cigar and that was the last time he ever bit anybody and he turned out to be a good horse. Barney and Babe, a gelding and mare. Childhood memories. Thanks again for taking me back to those times.

one time in the 40s when I was kid,, there was a company in Syracuse that delivered coal with horse drawn dump wagons, one of my uncles drove for them and came home one night and told us that a women spit near a certain horse and he took off half her jaw with his teeth.. apparently he didn't like anyone spitting near him.. don't know if it's true or not but I know they hurt even if they pinch you with those teeth.

Wonderful Mare...Fun to watch..... My Dad did this until the early 50's when he bought a tractor. He use to take one of my big ponies and skid birch firewood out of the woods. I think he really missed working with the work horses.

Good video we had a team on the farm till 1962 dad would park tractors in the winter and spread manure with them and haul hay with a sleigh between farms good memories

Hi. Grew up in Manitoba,🇨🇦. My dad did the same until the early 70’s. We used the horses for haying in the summer up until I was 10 yrs (1956) as I was the 2nd youngest until dad started to modernize as his help, my siblings started to leave the nest. We had the wood stove for cooking so we used the team and what we called the “manure boat”😄 to haul in dead poplar trees from the back pasture. As the team started to age he went to the tractor to haul the manure from the barn. We didn’t have a shed for it so he parked it in the barn. The moisture in the barn from tieing in the cows was brutal on the metal, just started to rust it😕 I start mine without blinders so when they hear the noise they associate what it is so when they turn their head it doesn’t freak them out.. Also, in case you want to do other activities with them like Ski-joring they won’t freak! My boy is about an 1/8 draft, 1/4 horse and some Arabian, solid boy but doesn’t like to stand for long, he gets inpatient! Enjoyed watching your video, learnt a few things.

Your new mare is coming along great Leonard, I've been using a strap around the nose of my horse off and on like you suggested, but I'm not sure it's helping him that much. maybe I have to be more consistent with it, he doesn't like it to very well.

I agree with his thoughts on the size of a horse for in the woods. Best horse I've had so far in the woods was a 15-1600lbs Percheron chuck. Big enough to move wood, small enough to get around easy, and I didn't need a ladder to harness him. Nice videos!

Worked with GrandPa ( he was 78 and a smaller guy) to hitch harness ( heavy leather) and wished we had a 2 wheel rig instead of loading on a stone boat (chained),,,20 year old mare and a 5 year old mare,,,5 year old was super strong but the "old lady" kept her in line...Commands were all in Polish !!! GPa let me "team" after a week or so in the woods.

Very interesting and informative video. Yesterday I dragged 26 logs out of my woods using my little John Deere 1025R. Sure would have preferred using horses but my little fellow did a great job. I had deep mud rather than snow. Mud sucks!

In the 1930s my dad used to work clearing for the new dam. He was hurt when a tree fell on him,he was trapped under a tree for 30 minutes. In the 90s they found out it injuredhis kidney . He lived with only one and never knew about it.

With the belly band don't place it in the armpit. That can create wounds, break the skin and damage the hairs. An overall sensitive spot. This is why we riders (at least in english) we place the girth a little back toward the stomach. So there should be like a hand or two inbetween the girth and the armpit. Just wanted to point out since it looked like it was a tad too forward -atleast to my eye.

I see how you think that. When they're actually pulling, the belly band comes back. He has those extra straps on the belly band to actually keep it from going too far back onto the horses diaphragm. The belly band is not tight around the horse but with all their winter hair it looks like it is.

I was a prize fighter for years I logged for years and spent a few years in the Bering sea king crabbing so considered myself a fairly tough fellow. But men and women who can work with horse are twice the man I’ll ever be. Always wanted to log with horses but the damn things give me the heebeejeebees Every time I’m around them they step on my toes smash me into fences and hit me in the butt with their heads and I’m not about to argue with a 1200 lb animal that is probably smarter than me. All the horses wear cruppers when they're young so they get used to them, other than that I don't find them necessary. My lines a long enough that I can keep them within reach. I have total faith in the old horse. I don't shoe them. I don't go out if it's slippery.

Hames and they fasten to the collar, the traces and harness connect to them and they actually do the most important job, except for the collar that protects the horse from getting sore,.
