Nice to see enough people breeding mules to make up some classes at a show. I've not seen a mule foal in a very long time. Back in the seventies, when a lot of the old timers from the WWII generation and before were starting to retire and get out of having big mules, it became a thing to have hitches of mini mules with miniature harness and wagons, and there were a many of them around. These were maybe just a little bigger than Shetland pony size mules. The Russell County fair, up here in Kentucky, had mule races with these little mini mules. The Jaycees served as jockeys, and they rode bareback, grown men on these little bitty mules. Their feet pretty much dragged on the ground. They could stand up and let the mules run out from under them. The course was the saddle horse show ring, twice around. It was pretty much a race of attrition. You could remount, if you kept ahold of your mule when you fell off, and it wasn't so much that the fastest mule won, it was whoever stayed on long enough to get twice around. It was the one of the funniest things I ever saw. They did it every year for several years, and then I guess the Jaycees probably bought out every case of liniment and Ben-Gay in the county, and stopped doing it. So will you be taking your girls next year?
@zachodom7486Күн бұрын
That’s pretty neat. I don’t do much showing. I’m just not a showman. So probably not. I do some exhibits sometimes showing the logging stuff and I don’t mind that stuff. Just wondering why would you have young mules in the front instead of older My thinking is the older know more and would lead the younger better Also is it harder for the front mules to turn or move then the back. Also I am very glad you were able to film this support Mr summers and show us. Mr summers is amazing testimony to us all and what you can with life when you’re older. Very nice to see the passion he still has. Also liked to see your daughter be a part of your and Mr summers day. Thank you Zach once again for a great video
@zachodom74865 күн бұрын
Well, typically for working type situations you’d want the young ones in the back. For showing however you want your bigger team in the back. And the front team needs to step on out a little. So faster team in front. The colts fit the bill for this particular situation. Breaking colts and working them, it’s best to put the colts in the rear. Even if they’re faster. Because it’ll teach the colts to slow up and wait on the older ones to help them. Instead of trying to pull all the load by themselves. But showing is a little different. Anyway, hope I answered your question. And thank you for such kind encouraging words on our video and my friend Mr Summers. He’s a good one! Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care of yourself and do come again, please

Is Byrd a female or male. It seems that summers likes females. Is it the same for you Zach and if so why
@zachodom74865 күн бұрын
Byrd is a mare mule. They are all mare mules and yes we both like keeping mare mules. Generally speaking, they’re easier to get along with and will generally be more “horse like” in the body. More rounded hips and such. Whereas horse mules tend to be more “donkey like” in the body. And can be a little harder handling. Not all of them, but just sort of a general rule of thumb. I have had good and bad in both sexes though. Some people don’t like mares or mare mules because of them coming in season. But tbh, I don’t even know when mine comes in and out. They’re the same everyday. Horse mules will generally get a tad bigger and can stand just a tad more work than a mare mule can. Lot of the old loggers liked horse mules over mare mules. But me personally, I prefer the mare mules. But if a horse mule is built nice and has a good mind, I’d take him just the same. Horse mules often tend to rough house each other and play a lot too. Whereas mare mules tend to settle quicker. Much like us humans. Where ladies tend to mature and settle down quicker than most males if that makes sense.
