To take out petrol from tank of bike we use a rubber pipe. One end of pipe is dip inside the tank and petrol is sucked from other open end. Once the petrol starts coming then it steadily flows out provided that the level of open end of pipe is below the level of tank. This is called as action of syphon.
Similarly when the water comes out from the hydraulic turbine (Francis and Kaplan or other reaction turbine) then if we apply a pipe on the exit of turbine for developing action of syphon then it will start pulling water from turbine to develop extra hydraulic power ( together with push force of water when it enters the turbine). That pipe is called as draft tube. Learn the concept of Draft tube by this easy to understand lecture....

Diverging angle is generally taken 5 to 7 degree to avoid Flow separation.

Thank you that you made me understanding the draft tube importance. This make me wanting to know more how to design/calculate the draft tube. Is it any limit to determine the H of draft tube, its longest length compared to whatever number such as diameter of A1 or A2 or compared to V1 or V2 or compared to P1 or P2...? or any recommend of of wide angle of the draft tube wall?

As there is vacuum at point 1...the water can flow back from tail race to the point 1?? Possible right ?? If not why

Akhil C Flow gets reversed if and only if , large work done against gravity ! It would require head (Gross head + H) & its not possible..😊

Akhil , at point 1 pressure is higher compared to 2 , otherwise fluid can't flow toward draft tube...

Thank u. Sir could u explain why pressure at point 2 is taken as atmospheric pressure?? If we apply Bernoulli's equation between water point 2 and outside water from draft tube it will give " Pa=P2+$V2^2/2 (take density by symbol $) " so sir P2 is less than Pa. Sir could u pls correct me.

P2 is less than Pa but greater than P1 . It appears you are confused with static pressure, dynamic pressure and total pressure.
