Today, we discuss draft wheelchairs, the best lightweight travel wheelchair, and choosing a manual wheelchair. In this video, Leandre talks about how he chose a wheelchair based on the factors most important to him. He chose a more narrow-style wheelchair with guards so that he could move faster, use the chair to travel, and stay as clean and dry as possible. Here’s his story:
My name is Leandre Castleman and I have a story to tell. In 2000, I broke my neck in a gymnastics accident resulting in a C7 incomplete spinal cord injury. This is the third wheelchair I've had in that time. I love global travel and going as fast as possible, so those have become my priorities in terms of how I set up my wheelchair.
The most impactful decisions that I've had control over in terms of how my wheelchair is set up were to go with larger 25” wheels, which allow me to go faster and push more efficiently with longer strokes. Short tab push rims, which are closer to my wheels, and no camber in the angle of my wheels so that my chair is as narrow as possible, because I like to travel a lot to developing countries that don't necessarily have accessible washrooms. So, by having a narrow wheelchair, I can get into more places.
I also chose larger front caster wheels so that my chair would roll more easily over rough and bumpy terrain, and I wanted clothing guards which also acted as mud guards covering the top of my wheels so my clothing would stay as clean and dry as possible. So, I chose to have a custom foot loop style foot rest that allowed me to have a foot strap that ties directly to the footrest, that way I can keep my feet and legs in place no matter what type of terrain.
