As far as "these" Imaginative realism and the light and color books of James Gurney are in my cart. Off to be the wizard (because I have not read that yet of the ones mentioned) As far as the "art of" section those were awesome but those aren't my favorites. Adam Duff on lucid pixel does a lot of videos that look into the art of books. For anyone reading this comment please look up lucid pixel on KZbin for more recommendations on the "art of" topic.

Dear Mr Gurney, I finally got your book "imaginative realism" and it is very encouraging even for someone who ist still expanding his drawing skills and hasn't that much experience with painting. Thank you very much for your work and I'm looking forward to read "Color and light" when I'm ready for it.

33:15 start of a discussion that was really valuable to me. Taking notes, not multitasking, sitting down to do one thing for a set period of time. This is something that I've gotten WORSE at growing up, meaning that I've lost a lot of focus since finishing my education. However, yesterday I've managed to sit down and finish a drawing in one sitting. It took 3-4 hours, very late at night (started just before midnight I think). I can't even tell how long exactly it took, because I was in a flow like state and very focused on the drawing. This is a really good indication for me that I had a great session, and I feel a TON lot better vs. being distracted while working. I remember feeling this level of focus many times before, so now it's just a matter of consciously trying to focus on the process of drawing. Hopefully you don't have to be alone in your room and late at night like me just to focus, but putting yourself in an environment where you CAN put your mind to focus makes the whole difference. Also I want to point out that music is completely fine, but only when it's being received as a white noise/background noise. You don't want it to take your attention.

Books are great because you don't get lost down rabbit holes like you do with the web. It's nice to look through 30 pages in a book for a concept reference vs the unlimited content of the web

Having books for reference is very different from having the internet. When I google for references, the problem isn't that I can't find images that work, it's that I find so many other images that distract. That, combined with it being more screen time can sometimes be so numbing that it really slows my intake of visual information. Great recommendations, guys! Can't wait for next season!

As a lifetime competitive swimmer, listening to Stan talk about learning through repetitiveness and slowly adding another piece to the puzzle reminds me of what I’m now learning through trying to draw. You’ve gotta grind the basics individually, a lot, before you "get it" and it becomes natural. What I’ve been having trouble with is always trying to look at the bigger picture too often, and getting overwhelmed with all there is to learn then falling off the grind. These podcasts/videos have been great in keeping me grounded and offering advice on where and how to start. Your discourse and tangents are both entertaining and filled with knowledge. Please keep doing what you’re doing. Stan: I hope you continue to swim, it’s a great low impact sport that will keep you in shape for the rest of your life if you go to the pool a few times a week. Remember: technique is key! Marshall: you’ve definitely become the art "parent" of a lot of young artists through this series, whether you know it or not. Your perspective course has been great, and was definitely what I was looking for when trying to learn how to draw. Nice beard by the way! Looks great!

Hey, Gents! Not necessarily related to this video, but I just watched a documentary on Polish artist Szukalski. In the docu, they discussed how he was absolutely against education, especially art education. I think one of his quotes was, “burn the art academy”. I thought of you guys because of the discussion you had a while back about the pros and (mostly) cons of Art School. I would love to learn more about him. He seemed quite...eccentric, to stay the least.

I’m sure anyone can relate. It’s like with educating babies. If you show them how to do X. They won’t have the brain power needed and the creativity needed to solve the problem on their own. So the price of knowledge is the destruction of creativity. And for those of you that are appalled by this statement- remember how many people are quick to stay on using reference and relying on teachers, and relying in general support to motivate themselves. Why? Because they lack it themselves. And if you don’t know that you can solve your own problems, you are just continuing to cultivate generations of clones and who are afraid of themselves, and can’t see the beauty of taking on the world by themselves. That’s why it’s so harmful if you are not careful with the usage of knowledge.

20:00 about seeing the process and stages of a piece. Really reminded me why I enjoy listening to jazz. It’s about seeing what the process of the artist is in real time. Since jazz(the real one) is about improvising. So when you hear a proper jazz solo, you can, if you’re fast enough, realize the beauty of a moment, you weren’t able to see that beauty before. When you imagine what you might have done on that moment.

I enjoyed what Marshall said about getting rid of his TV. I was watching less than an hour of TV a month so I got rid of my TV and I think its the best decision I Have ever made. These days the internet is my next distraction and since I use it so frequently to learn from I can't get rid of it yet. I do self check myself like does this pertain to my goals or am I endlessly scrolling nonsense. I think the internet is just one big distraction if you log in without any goal in mind.

JAC Redford told me (in the 90's) not to miss the Dawn Upshaw version. I bought the CD, didn't care much for it, but out of respect listened to it about 100 times over 25 years... then a few months into the lockdown it washed over me as one of the most emotional music experiences I've ever known. Now I understand why JAC was so insistent.

Do more book reviews. It would also be nice if they brought “what’s yo thang” every now and then

Fascinating that the concept of “out of print” books is still a thing in 2020s.

Does Marshall have a list of his favorite Great Courses anywhere? If not I’d love to see one.

you know what I think Stan and Marshall should talk about, that people that is successful in the creative art industry rarely want to talk about? Being an artist/art student with mental health issues, I have seen so many of my friends suffer from depression and feeling like their works are terrible and that they are not worth it when that is entirely untrue. All the professionals in the field only talk about having a go-getter attitude, but it's sometimes not that simple for some people.
