Drag and Drop PS2 Game Files on Large PS2 Hard Drives Using GrimDoomer OPL Build (Tutorial 2023)

Today's video I test out GrimDoomer's OPL build that lets you drag and drop PS2 game files onto an exFAT hard drive, and then using a modified OPL build you can see the games and play! No need to use third party programs.
Note: At this time, cannot use this with freehdboot at this time as you must format the hard drive initially before adding game files. Good news you can use your large extra capacity SATA hard drives (i.e. 2TB and higher)!

Versatile... 1st off I wanna let you know I have referenced your videos many many times and your videos have helped very much when it has come to the PS2.. Thank you for that. Before I get started, Trust me I know that this version of OPL is still in the works... Anyways... You made this version of OPL sound really good... and it may be really good... to those that haven't already worked with OPL in the past... This new OPL version Pros: 1. Can drag & drop ISO's to a an exFAT formatted HDD/SSD with a capacity higher than 2TB's (no 3rd part programs) 2. Supports more than 1 USB at a time Cons: 1. In Settings, Default Menu... When switching this option, it does not save... I have tried to change "BDM Games" to "HDD Games" and it will not save the setting. When you save, go out & go back in it is set back to "BDM Games". 2. No support for POPStarter 3. You also stated that it was cool that this build of OPL recognizes more than one method... and it does... 6:57 But it already did this before... Only difference is now it has "Less Options" to choose from than before... In the main menu, OPL had "5" options to choose from... USB Games, ETH Games, HDD Games, Apps & PS1 Games (AKA POPStarter) I watched/used your videos to set all of that up... Now this version of OPL has... USB, SMB, IDE & Apps. Even the way it's titled "SMB" & "IDE". Also if you wanted USB Games, HDD Games, Apps & PS1 Games on your main menu you could select them and leave ETH Games not selected & you would only see the ones you selected on the main menu... This OPL has no option to remove anything that you aren't using from your main menu. 4. Themes don't work correctly 5. I tried some Apps & USB games... and well unless I'm doing something wrong (cause I had them working before) or they need to be added differently... They aren't working either (I'm still trying things out) In the end... The biggest advancement with this version of OPL is that you can drag and drop ISO's to an exFAT formatted HDD/SSD... other than that I feel OPL has went backwards not forward..

I love that we can now have more than just a 2TB HDD/SSD but I hope that some time in the near future the options and bugs I have mentioned before are addressed. @@iDok These days I just play around with the 1.1.0 and sometimes the beta versions of OPL from the github. I am in the psx-scene.com discord so I'll pass your comments along. Likely they have heard these comments before and it will be a matter of time before they do something. For sure integrated popstarter ps1 support won't happen as it requires some copyrighted files, and the daily build fork was done by another dev that is shunned by the original PS2 dev community, so there is some drama in the OPL development scene so to speak.

i tested using an SSD and the art loaded much faster but it was only a 250 gig SSD so didn't have as many games and my 2tb HDD

I like the concept however i have some concerns about CD games that are less than 700 mb. Would it read the cd games from the CD folder or do i have to convert them to isos ? I am using PFS batch kit to transfer games into the internal HDD and it does transfer CD games into CD folder. I do not convert cd games to iso to avoid issues

Hi, terrific video, thank you! Sadly, I am having issues with my 3TB hard disk. Grimdoomer sees it but it doesn't see the games in it. I formated it in exFAT/512b, I even made it smaller (1.5TB) but still nothing. Do you know what it can be? The procedure is so easy that I think the only issue possible is the HDD. As HDD I am using a external hard drive I had, so I am plugging it to the PC with its original case.

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia You are correct, I had the wrong version of OPL. I encourage others to make sure they have GrimDoomers version. I formated the Hard Drive in exFat and put all of the folders on it like a giant flash drive and I was able to dump all of my .iso (unsplit) right in the DVD folder including all files bigger than 4gb. The only downfall is you can no longer use HD Loader app as it wants to reformat the hard drive, unless you have a workable soulution to that. Other than that, if there was a way to transfer files over the network so I don't have to disassemble the network adapter then it would be flawless. Thank you again for this video it was a HUGE help.

I just found the hdd_dll folder on OPL manager and found the ART folder that I needed. My hdd is formatted for PS2 so I cant do the drag drop. Currently letting uLE copy over all the images to the hdd from a USB drive. I have a question though, once a hdd is formatted to PS2 and had the games loaded on it is there any program that can correct the titles? OPL manager has the rename and delte functions greyed out when using a formatted PS2 hdd

Two things: 1) A lot of PS2 games were made for CRT TVs, meaning that they display in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Modern TVs are wide screen (16:9), and while a few PS2 games support wide screen, most don't. This means that, in essence, your wide TV is showing you a much narrower image. The black bars are there not because of some kind of visual glitch, but because there is literally nothing there. If you don't like it, your options are either to force the picture to wide screen (not recommended since it'll just stretch it) or play the game on an emulator, as the community has created many patches that force wide screen in games that didn't originally support it. 2) It is generally not recommended to use HDMI on PS2, since the console doesn't natively support it. While there are some HDMI dongles you can use, those compress the video quality significantly, and are generally not worth it unless you LITERALLY have no other choice. For PS2, the best video quality will come from a component cable (the one with 6 plugs as opposed to composite which only has 3). Depending on when your TV was made, it's possible that it doesn't support composite at all, but many will still support it with the use of dongles. My Samsung TV for instance came with adapters that look like headphone jacks which plug into the side of the TV and allow connection via composite.

Avoid HDMI adapters like the plague. Not only are they cheap garbage but more often than not, they make the image worse by introducing a lot of visual noise. If you going with HDMI as the default format, use a SCALER like the RetroTink 5x or OSSC.

You can rip and burn PS2 ISOs, just not with the PS2 itself. That requires a PC and an optical drive

I think the best is go find a ps2 bluetooth adapter and then use your favorite bluetooth controller. These don't do pressure sensitive though, only the original ps2 dualshock controller from what I understand.

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia yeah I'm currently using codebreaker 10 myself because somebody already had the files to patch it to work with HDD but it's kind of buggy, the reason I found your video describing to use cheat device in the first place. I can only launch codebreaker 10 once if I try and do it again it freezes on the black screen. So my guess would be the cheat device would need to be patched as well but I don't know what exactly that would take.

yes, the ps2 usb port version is1.0, so the data transfer rate is slow, the cutscene required higher data transfer rate which not supported by usb 1.0

@@DokesConspiracyNetwork all good, in some games loadings are almost non existent. The only problem I encountered has been a little freeze with ace combat 5 but with opl there are many compatibility options.

Make sure enough space when installing OPL the first time, maybe delete any existing OPL folder on the memory card to get a clean slate.

This version of OPL is ass. It would load 50% of the time if I was lucky. If it did launch, it would detect my games 25% of the time.

Good to know! There's also the problem for those who already have their HDD with all their backups would have to either extract the ISOs one by one with Winhip or format their HDD entirely just to use this version of OPL. It's not worth it honestly.

So far it has loaded 100% of the time and always detects all the games, not sure how you have yours setup but mine works fine, I'm using v1.2.0.5-1991 Beta

@@kevinfromsales9445 You can use HDLBatchInstaller to extract multiple games at once. Nobody should be using WinHiip in [current year], it is outdated and buggy as hell.

@ProjectPhoenixMedia yes I took your advice n pit a DVD iso in DVD folder n it works on my 5tb seagate n 20tb barracuda but not on my 8tb seagate. Also doesn't read cd folder on any hdd. I run the cd folder from USB on my 2tb thumb drive fat32.
