Drag King Hugh Jindapants demonstrates how to create a top-notch beard and stubble using burnt cork, eyeliner, crepe hair, spirit gum and other makeup and tools of the trade.
Total elapsed time: 35 minutes
*Burn a wine cork--not synthetic--and outline beard (work into hairline for a seamless look)
*Use moist cotton swabs or make up wipes to clean up and define your design
*To thicken eyebrows, try eyeliner or burnt cork
*Liquid eyeliner over cork template provides dark background for crepe hair--also makes outline sharper and easier to follow with spirit gum
*To get rid of kinks caused by the braid, unravel the braid of crepe hair, run under hot water, and let dry completely (alternatively: try a flat iron)
*Trim hair finely into a sealable container
*Apply spirit gum to template (optional: dab gum with pinky finger to make tacky)
*Apply crepe hair in pinchfuls, holding container under to catch excess
*Repeat as necessary to fill in gaps
*Use a small pair of scissors to trim around the edges as well as any longer hairs, being careful not to cut your face (manscaping) don't forget the bottom of your chin for when you lift your head up
*Use a stipple sponge and grease paint (from a costume shop) for stubble
*Dip the sponge in the paint then tap on a piece of paper to clear any large chunks
*Apply sparingly to face and neck, experiment before applying crepe hair to see what works for you--if you're going to be on stage, make it more dramatic so that the audience can see from a distance
*Apply finishing powder to set the grease paint so it won't sweat/rub off
*Don "nice guy" fedora and you're set!
