I left the Jehovah’s Witnesses religion last year, and lost all my friends and family due to their shunning policy. Katya calling them out as a cult was really appreciated.

If you were born in the 1980s like Trixie, Katya, and the first half of the Millennials, this wasn’t history. As far as our parents were concerned, the Jonestown massacre was breaking news. And they weren’t going to tell their primary school kids that 900+ Americans had just died in a forced execution. Trixie’s mention of “Drink the Kool-Aid”? That’s more or less what trickled down to us as little kids with no internet. And because it was posed as voluntary - a bunch of zealots who willingly poisoned themselves because they believed it would send them to Heaven - the phrase entered our lexicon as “Think for yourself”. That’s how our parents soothed us: if you think for yourself, you don’t have to be afraid of this. Like Katya and Trixie, I did not know that the people who “drank the Kool-Aid” were forced at gunpoint to do so. And we definitely didn’t hear about the shootings or the dead Congressman. Very strange to think about.

Craziest thing for Aum Shinrikyo to me is that the members were mostly extremely well educated. Like, top universities in Japan. Doctors, lawyers, scientists. Not hippies, artists, religious or free love type people that a lot of the other cults mentioned attracted. Asahara was able to take advantage of a very specific time in Japanese history, right after the economic bubble burst, and people, despite their incredible education, started to question their future and self worth.

I think something to keep in mind in regards to when Trixie said the sympathy thing and "how can people get sucked into this" is a lot of these situations don't start as cults initially and many don't realize it progresses into a cult until it gets to that major point, WIRED and Anthony Padilla have really good videos from former cult members who have good perspectives on it, especially when most of the view comes from the outside looking in, Anthony's really helps go into the empathy of looking at it and how hard it was to eventually get out of them

These manipulative people like to prey on people when they're vulnerable and often like to "collect" people who are considered productive and valuable members of society. They like having doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc because it adds legitimacy to their organization (I mean, just look at Scientology). It's no one's fault for falling under the spell of a charismatic manipulative person because they literally take advantage of human nature and how the brain works. I've taken classes on conditioning for my psych degree and the same techniques used to educate people are what's taken advantage of in manipulation. The brain has pretty straightforward formulas for learning and you can do amazing things with it but it can easily be used for terrible purposes. To add to the suggestions people are making, Trust Me is a great podcast that explores this. The hosts are former members of cults and they focus on cults, extreme belief, and manipulation. So they've done stuff about incel culture, scammers, grooming, tic tok trends, how we treat trauma, fundies and other extreme Christian groups, etc, etc. They've even done an interview with a former Heavens Gate member which was really interesting but also absolutely heartbreaking, I hope Frank Lyford is doing well and living his best life

I agree with most of what you said. Most cults were started because they really wanted to help people. But then it slowly turns into a cult and the followers don’t realize it because they are so invested. The only cult I know that was a cult from the moment it was created, is Scientology. L. Ron Hubbard started it as a way to make money. He wasn’t terribly successful as a Sci-Fi writer. But as he was coming up with his evil plans. He wrote his first Scientology book. And he didn’t have a crazy price on it. But he noticed that people were really interested. That was right at the start of the self help craze. And he realized if I can get people in the door and get them excited about self helping yourself and making everyone stronger healthier and happy people why not. Let’s give it a shot. Then he got his first handful of students. And he asked them after reading Dyanetics if they understood what what they read. And followed up with questions. And he told each person that they didn’t fully have a grasp of what he was saying and told them to read it again. And a couple days later he did the same again. He had his patrons hypnotizing themselves. Then he had his second book written and ready for sale and he was able to charge for the class AND the course. And he had given the mission that each student needed to bring in 3 more friends that might be interested. And BOOM he had a cult. L. Ron’s son went on a speaking tour about how dangerous Scientology was. How his father was going to keep pushing his disciples to give more and more money. From buying his books, to the courses and the auditing and just plain donations. And as his success grew he got wackier and wackier with each new agenda he created. Then when he had 3 thousand followers was when he started trying to get tax exempt. Because he had heard that real churches don’t have to pay taxes. And that was only when he started calling it a religion. He never considered it as a church. Until he realized that he could still have all the money coming in and not have to pay even a dime of taxes on any of it. And I think one of the saddest parts is. Is that he wasn’t even a believer in what he taught. He knew that it was all just hooey. That’s it’s not possible to do all the things he is promising. And actually Dyanetics actually taught some really good basics of how to be successful. But he got greedy and he started getting a big head because he was able to get people hooked and he really didn’t need to do much of anything. And all he really had to do was keep coming up with wackier and wackier ideas. Holding the cans actually started out as just empty cans. That he had scientists working on to measure electrical waves that run naturally through us. Crazy stuff for sure.

I was in a cult most of my life and my family joined in the 90’s before I turned 2. I left last year. It’s almost always fear that keeps people from leaving and fear keeps them there. There’s a lot of sweet, unassuming people who needed help and answers but they got in and couldn’t leave for fear of losing everything. And you do lose a lot from leaving but more of that comes from the leaders making sure you feel the consequences of leaving.

I have an aunt and uncle that are Moonies. They live off the grid. Their kids don't go to school or have SSNs. They had 4-5 girls and 1 boy, I think. The uncle kissed my bare shoulder when saying goodbye to me at a family gathering when I was like 12. My mom said he was probably coked up at the time since he had kept disappearing into the bathroom that day. I remember he was pale and sweating. I really really hope those kids got away from them.

You should definitely report them. Pretty sure not registering your children is very much illegal, I'm not from the US but I can't imagine any government allowing citizens to not register their kids, mostly for tax reasons but also for cases exactly like this. Report them. There's no way there's no abuse happening there.

@zoerice4227 We literally have no idea where they are. I haven't seen them in close to 20 years. Who knows if they are even in this state anymore. At this point, those kids are adults and I'm just hoping they are safe. Yes, what they did is absolutely illegal. My side of the family was trying to play nice in the hopes that they could stay in contact to be there for the kids. They were afraid they would just disappear if they tried anything. Unfortunately, they ended up disappearing anyway.

OK SO, in 2019 Chile had a big social uprising and with that came a lot of far right fake news about venezuela paying people to go out to protest and stuff like that, so as a joke someone made a copy pasta about Katya being a communist russian spy in our country, of course someone took it seriously and it started doing the rounds as fake news do, so it showed up in a news paper here about who “Brian Mccook” was and that he wasn’t an actual russian spy. I know Katya saw it and put the newspaper clipping in her ig stories at the time. It’s just a funny thing that links Katya with Chile so I like to bring it up any chance I get lolol
