with the current state of drag race i think you’re right, but to me it feels a little bittersweet to know that’s how things are. early drag race really felt like a space for queens with potential to hone their skills, give/receive guidance, and learn about themselves as they compete. we’re at a spot now where the competition is so elevated that it leaves very little room for that anymore, and i hope to see bigger better communities pop up in online and live spaces for queens still figuring their looks out

It's the opportunity to completely immerse themselves in their art for a time, in a way that everyday life is not going to offer. It's like a particularly long and gruelling workshop or drag boot camp. This kind of immersion in your art, amongst a group of fellow artists is so valuable for developing the artist, no matter how good or raw you are.

The thing is, Marcia x3 was severely underestimated by the fandom but she made a name for herself in her own right. I’d say the fandom definitely respects her as a performer at least bc we thought she’d scoot around but she really put up a great fight against Anetra, which warrants respect anyway bc she didn’t just straight give up against the queen that ended up 2nd place overall.

While it made for a great underdog story with Jinkx and Bob, the times of the show has changed, and if you’re not showing up to the competition as a fully realized drag queen, you can’t stack up to the rest of the cast, no matter how talented or full of personality you are.

Nope, drag race is indeed a place to developed their drag, there are tons of queens who went to drag race who are not necessarily polished look wise and succeeded. The most important criteria is their personality, if looks are the main criteria all the winners would be a fashion queens but that's not the case. There is a reason why only a handful of winners are fashion queens.
