Cultural Contexts: The entire promo theme was about Filipino Jeepneys. It was the same kind of jeepney in America but longer because it has become a public transportation here along with buses, trains, etc. (the most convenient one too). I think they did this in the first season because of the name of the show itself, race. Jeepneys were the kings and queens of Philippine roadways. What a cool touch. Jeepney Puns Used: "Basta sexy, libre" (As long as you're sexy, it's free) So, you need to remember that jeepney is a public transportation. It has small fees. However, this connotation was actually negative. This comes from SOME jeepney drivers who is notoriously filthy by catcalling beautiful women in their liking. It was a traditional joke, but a very toxic and offensive one. I don't think it's offensive in drag race context tho. "Basta drag queen sweet lover" (Drag queens are sweet lovers) This comes from a popular Filipino line that says "Basta driver, sweet lover" [(Jeepney) Drivers are sweet lovers]. To be honest personally, it was a petty and macho fascist call. It is somehow related to - (as long as you're sexy, it's free). "Barya lang po sa umaga" (Only spare change in the morning!/ Only coins in the morning) At early morning, jeepneys were just starting to travel. You cannot pay whole amount or paper currency on that time because drivers often lack of coins for change since they got nothing on their cash drawers. If you pay coins or exact fare in the morning, it was less hassle for you and the driver. "Bayad muna bago baba" (Pay first before you go) and "God knows JUDAS not Pay" There is this tragic reality that some unforgivable passengers do not pay fare on jeepneys. The traditional way of paying fare was by saying "bayad po" (payment please) and hand it over to the driver himself/herself. If you're too far from the driver since the jeep was long, other passengers passes your money to the driver. Some passengers however would not pay just because the drivers won't call them out. These two were common signs in front of passengers' seat. "Pull the string to stop" and "Mama, para" (Mr. Driver, stop) It was also a signage in front of the passengers' seat. Some of jeepneys has this string in the ceiling that you pull if you've arrived at your destination, so the jeepney would stop. But usually, jeepneys do not have that string. So you need to shout "Mama, para" out for the driver to pull over. "Bawal tumawid, nakamamatay" (No crossing, it's deadly) Since we have bad roadways, pedestrian lines, and underpasses here in the country, it is common to jaywalk because it is way more time convenient to civilians. This is a popular local cautionary sign. "Hopia, Mani, Popcorn" (Hopia, Peanuts, Popcorn) and "Takatak" There are street vendors where jeepney drivers often stop to buy on. They're selling hopia, a Filipino sweet delicacy that I think came from chinese people, peanuts or popcorn. Usually they're on sidewalks so drivers could reach on them. Some walking vendors on street was also well known, they were called "takatak" boys. Takatak came from the sound they're using (from clicking their coins to their wooden container of goods) to call for drivers to buy their hand-held merch. Mostly, cigarettes, candies, bubblegums, etc. What Gigi Era has on her hand was actually what the wooden container looks like. P.S. There are modern gay lingo that filipino queer people uses. In this particular gideo, they used two. However I know for a fact that they'll have much more gay language in the series, so let it be known that by watching DRPH, you are learning the filipino gay language, not the basic filipino languange. 1. "Vacla" (from "buckle up, mga vacla", they translated it to "queens") - Gay or queer - Comes from the word 'bakla' but nowadays we use "v" than "b" not just in this word because we think annunciating v's were sassier. 2. "Pakak" - Pow! ; Like that! - Gay lingo for something that's extra. NOTE: Please take a look with replies here. Some of my fellowmen just added a lot of infos👇👇👇

I’m really hoping that some enterprising Queen or DRPH fan does a commentary show explaining all the Filipino references and cultural points so the rest of us can learn and really immerse ourselves in the world of Filipino drag. Maybe like Rory’s Check The Reference videos or more in the style of Mera Mangle or IMHO - I don’t mind! I’d just like something - someone! - to guide us Europeans through it! It’s one thing to go, oh I didn’t get that, so I’ll look it up, as I’ve been doing with many of the references in the DR France/Espana/Italia versions, but there will be so much more that you don’t even realise you’ve missed because it’s more subtle, or the subtitle translations aren’t quite right (I’ve noticed this particularly with DRFrance as I speak some French) or a myriad of other reasons. For instance, I was really confused as to why Snatch Game is called that until I found out that when the Americans made a version of our game show Blankety Blank, they changed the name to something more sensible and called it the Match Game. I couldn’t figure out how you got from Blankety Blank to Snatch for the pun for ages. Basically, nothing beats having a local to guide you, no matter how helpful google might be!

The Filipino GAY language (that's right, it's a whole different thing) plays on puns and similar sounds i.e. Buckle up mga Bakla (which actually translates to gays but the subs use "queens". 'Bakla' flows better with buckle up). Takaktak is an onomatopoeic sound that comes from that portable wooden "store" street vendors use to sell cigars and candies. Aside from looks, the richness of subversive gay language must be appreciated as well

I wish the subtitles are more accurate like Prince’s line “bayad muna bago baba” it should be “Pay first before you go down” because that line has 2 meanings; literal and sexual. It’s a punch line And so as the main host line “So let’s buckle up mga bakla” bakla isn’t translated to queens it’s “gay”. Just a small detail but hey it’s part of our culture to call each other bakla/accla. We reclaimed that term to something that is used as a language of homophobia to something that is now celebratory. *either way this promo is one of the best that drag race ever released.
