The video title is nonsense. All of us in the UK saw Stojkovic light up the Italia '90 World Cup. The fella was a genius. His two goals vs Spain were very special. But for losing on penalties to Argentina in the quarterfinal they would have been one step away from the final, and Stojkovic was the jewel in the crown for Yugolslavia. He reminded me of Michael Laudrup. Balance, vision, fantastic at feints, great finisher. He was a world class player.

Spot on comparison. Shades of Gazza pre his injuries
@danyoutube74914 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking of Michael Laudrup as I watched the first minute or so. Similar in physique, fast and tall yet with a remarkable touch that set the ball just where he wanted it for the next thing he would do, great balance. I understand the video title; I was nine when Italia 90 happened, but don't remember watching the games, even though I got the sticker albums etc. Stojkovic was one of the big names that we all knew, but after the tournament I never heard about him again. I just Googled him, having read about him elsewhere and been curious to know what happened. He moved to Marseille after Italia 90 where he soon suffered recurring injuries that ended his European career. He played just 29 games in four years in France, though apparently made a big impression on the fans nonetheless. Thankfully though he had an Indian Summer in his career, playing seven years in Japan with Nagoya Grampus Eight. A shame though that he didn't continue to be a leading star in European football for the next five years or so. Mind you, given the war and ensuing political problems in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, we wouldn't have gotten to see him or indeed his fellow stars (Savicevic et al, they had so many outstanding players) at USA 94, for example. A real shame for football that, as well as the country and players involved.

@@danyoutube7491 He had injuries in 1991-1993, unfortunately. Then, at the age of 28, he received huge sums of money from Japan. He went there to finish his career. He literally became a God in Japan. They even have streets named after him. You didn't hear because Yugoslavia (Serbia) got the most unfair and sick sports sanctions. Stojkovic could not play due to sports sanctions between 1992 and 1998. He was forbidden to participate in the best years of his life. At that time, Serbia had one of the most brutal teams ever (Savicevic, Mijatovic, Stojkovic, Mihajlovic, Jugovic, etc.) but we could not participate in 1992, 1994 and 1996, otherwise it was the most expensive national team in the world at that time. At the age of 33, he played in the World Cup in 1998 and was fantastic again like in 1990. We had 2-0 against Germany and then an unfortunate own goal turned the situation in the group. Stojkovic literally dominated the midfield against the Germans, a pure sporting accident. We had a penalty against the Netherlands in the round of 16 with the score 1-1, which Mijatovic missed. But in 1998, Stojkovic and Savicevic were old. 1992-1996 would be the main favorites even before Brazil, because nobody in the world had 3 players like Savicevic-Stojkovic-Mijatovic.

About the 1990 World Cup quarter-final against Yugoslavia in Italy. From that generation of Yugoslavian players I remember Dragan “Piksi” Stojkovic and I often ask how he and Dejan are doing. The constant dribbling to keep the ball off a soaked pitch was unbelievable. What a clever player. And how refreshing is it to see a player beat the keeper and then taunt him before he puts the ball into the net. You never see that in today's football. Coaches would have a heart attack. What a terrific player! He and Wenger had the honour of being in each other's company. Legends of the game!

If he was born in Argentina or Brazil nobody would gives a shit about Maradona,Messi or Pele,Ronaldo,Ronaldihno...Piksi would be their GOD. In World Cup in Italy 1990 at game Argentina-Yugoslavia (quaterfinal) he was Maradona instead of Maradona. Maradona was a shame on that game and the whole championship. And Piksi was WORLD TOP CLASS.

+Viši inspektor Bešević , I discover Piksi a year before he moved in OM (89-90), brilliant talented world class player: PIKSI STOJKOVIC, if was my inspiration as young kid, believe, i do understand what u mean, i was so frustated when he got his knee injured, because that kept him out the pitch for almost an entire season, i remember when he got back for the former Uefa champions league's final in bari italy, OM vs Etoile Rouge Belgrade (Red Star belgrade). OM's coach: Goethals made a serious mistake by not playing him right on the start of the game, despite Red Star's players at that time such as Prosinecki, Pancev, Savicevic confessing , fearing Dragan as crucial opponent on the pitch for the game, i remember that just like yesterday. I kept on wondering why he didn't have an career appropriated to his talent.And i came out with the conclusion that PIKSI failed the turning over by missing his crucial penalty against Argentina during 1990 World Cup 1/4 final, (even Maradona missed his but were a bit more lucky), if Yugoslavia would have got through, that could have transcended them for rest the rest of the competition. a wonderful team composed by great key's players: Katanec, Hazibegic, Susic, Vujovic, and the ones i've mentioned priorly. I always enjoy bumping into someone whom remember this WORLD CLASS PLAYER. PS: Enjoy what Leo Messi 's doing on the pitch, he still got few more year left then retire, then again people would miss this wonderful genius. For the Love of the game, peace man

Thanks for posting. He is one of my favorite number 10 playmaker. I watched him 1st time live on TV at WC 1990 in the match against Spain. I remember his free-kick goal (at 3:10). Sadly in the match against Argentina, he failed to score in penalty shoot-out, denied by crossbar. Maradona PK was worse, saved by the goalkeeper. Based on overall performance in that match, Stojkovic proved he was the better no.10 playmaker than Maradona. Now, watching this video, I become more impressed by his skills : ball control, dribbling, passing, shooting, FK and juggling. What an opening display : I rarely saw a player juggling on the ball in a real match. The 1st player I saw doing so in a real match was Glenn Hoddle (my favorite player of all time). At 1:52-1:54, LOL ... I have never seen such a thing. Ha.ha.ha.... What an entertaining moment. Xavi Hernandez must see this. If the pitch is bad, don't complain, just have fun with it, like Stojkovic was showing there. Ha..ha. He is in the top 5 of my favorite playmaker of all time : 1. Glenn Hoddle 2. Diego Maradona 3. Juan Roman Riquelme 4. Johan Cruyff 5. Dragan Stojkovic
