Do you want to know a sad thing? Hawkes story was probably one of the saddest I've seen from a videogame (The Walking Dead Telltale Game is the number one, but DA2 was a close 2nd in my opinion) Hawke and his/her family start off running from the Blight that has destroyed their family home and has nowhere else to run, during the escape his/her brother/sister is killed. The rest manage to get away in hope to get a second chance at a new life, it was rough but they pulled through. But after that, every single good thing that ever happens is always replaced with something twice as bad. Hawke gets pushed around, beaten, betrayed, and everything that he/she has worked for gets taken piece by piece till all that Hawke has left is nothing. Yet he always has hope to make a change, not matter how hard the struggle is.

+Green Archer (GreenArcher97) This... DA2 shows us a story not of a "chosen hero", but of a simple man/woman, who, in order to survive and keep his/her family safe, gets into a whirlpool of cruel events. They are not some epic world saving quests like in Inquisition or Origins, rather more casual, earthly tasks, fit for a simple band of mercenaries that Hawke and company actually are. Also you can feel that there are many things happening behind the scenes, behind the eyes of Hawke - political conflicts, their friends' personal lives, various crimes and small disasters... Just like in real life, where the world does not revolve around you. In the end you are left with consequences not only of your choices, but also of those invisible and unchangeable outcomes of life itself. I think this makes DA2 more relatable to the player than other two, and probably that's why it strikes so hard in the feelings...

+Justina Žutautaitė One year on from my original post, and I'm still glad and proud that people can still appreciate this game as much as I have and still do. It's a game I have gladly played multiple times, exploring different paths and conversation arcs I didn't choose on previous playthroughs and using different tactics with different companions. It's sad how this game didn't get the praise i think it rightfully deserved, sure it wasn't as 'unique' as Origins or Inquisition as you stated, but it shouldn't be shoved into its big brothers shadow just because of it, surprisingly I enjoyed this a lot more than that of Origins and Inquisition because the character of Hawke is the one that I can relate to the most as understand the struggles Hawke goes through such as doing everything possible to keep the peace to prevent civil war to break out into a world of peace. Hawke seems to have a much bigger humanity aspect than the Grey Warden and the Inquisitor, from my personal perspective.

the game locations can get repetitive yes, but the game itself with the story and characters decisions and great mechanics, is a wonderful game, delivers to the franchise. don't knot why people don't like the game, but then again most people like COD kind of games. amazing story! Mass Effect and Dragon Age are the reason i love games.

People just want to save the world in games apparantly. Not many people apreciate what a master piece of a story this game had because it was overshadowed by all the flaws. Instead of the usual "Hero" character it had an ambitious character who tried their best to save the people they loved but couldn't possibly stop. Hawke could only watch while stuff went down around them. I really really love this story more than I can put into words.

While I absolutely adore Dragon Age 2 as the game that introduced me to the franchise and while I will always hold the characters of DA2 closer to my heart than any other games characters, I do understand some of the more legitimate complaints. The game's development was rushed, and they missed a lot of opportunities with it for more/more in depth character development with characters like Fenris and Sebastian. A lot of people hated that Fenris was just an angsty porcupine that hated mages and was meant to act as the polar opposite of Anders with very little else going on on the surface. People hated how Sebastian's whole identity was being a servant of the Chantry. And not all people felt this way, but those were some examples of other complaints beyond the repetitive maps. One small thing that irked me, for example, was that if I chose to spec as a blood mage, no one gave a shit. No one. When several companions would make an outcry when any other character is revealed to be a blood mage.

If you play Dragon Age: Awakenings, Anders is a much cooler dude. You also meet Justice before he becomes one with Anders. Haha... I /know/ Justice is responsible for the accident with the Chantry. Anders hated Templars, but he never wanted a real war. All he wanted was a good life and a cat.

DA 2 was such a good game. It was one of the very few that gave me the "what do I do now?" feeling at the end. It was hard watching Hawke just leave like the way he did supporting the mages, not a word but his eyes said everything; he didn't want to be followed except by his friends. Ik inquisition brings him back but that game doesn't have the interesting vibe like the last two games had.

I finally finished dragon age 2 yesterday and I got the very same feeling And then this played just when I was getting seriously depressed, it's such a good game that way but it also had an anticlimactic ending just hand over the book to leliana and then the game comes to a close What happened between then and inquisition with everyone, when hawke is talked to about it he/she doesn't mention much, aside from they went their separate ways, and Merrill went back to Kirkwall to help whoever was left from the war between the mages and templars

Exactly what I was thinking. I constantly romance Anders in the game and this song is even more heartbreaking when the Hawke you played didn't agree with Anders but went along with him anyway. (aka, my Male Mage Hawke) It reminds me of Hawke in Inquisition where Hawke mentions about Anders that he doesn't know if they ever got over the fact that Anders lied to Hawke. It's something Hawke says if he didn't agree with Anders about destroying the chantry, romanced him and let him live.

When I played I did not know where to put Anders' betrayal as he always told that it will end in ruin and he will break Hawke's heart. In DAO my elf mage liked the circle and understood it's importance like Wynne did and I always supported mages except blood mages. My mage Hawke also supported mages even tho her mother died because of blood magic. But when even Anders betrayed her...it was the very last straw on mages side.

The locations get repetitive after a while. Also simplifications of some things was a big deal, combat was much easier to understand (at least in terms of combo moves) and skills were more RPG like (tech trees), on other hand I personally (and many others) did not like simplification of Dark Spawn. While the game was still bitchin', it could not measure up to its older sibling and that is why people might "dislike" it at first, and definitely prefer the Origins.
@LosEagle

The thing is, nothing can ever amount to Origins. When franchise starts with awesome game there are always gonna be people saying "it's nothing like the first game". The locations are repetitive for sure but in my book its much better game than inquisition which seems to be all about graphics and little about gameplay.

Yes it was annoying being stuck in the city, it was linier, etc. But it was still a good game with a fantastic story, combat and characters. Screw anyone who thinks they speak for DA fans when they go on about the second game being rubbish.

I played as a fem rogue Hawke, I was always against the Templars from day one because I always imagined her as over protective of Bethany (and Carver but he died). Plus there father was an apostate so even more reason to side mage. But then I romanced Ander because I thought it was brilliant, Hawke falls in love with an apostate like her mom before her. Then the ending comes and he destroyed the chantry, I just couldn't bring myself to forgive him but I couldn't kill him either. I broke off the romance then and imagined Hawke as completely torn up over it, (while through out the entire game I saw her as a complete badass). Them when this started playing it killed me.

Unpopular opinion but *THIS* feeling is what DA:I lacks. When you sitting in front of the credits speechless. The hero of ferelden fought so hard and in Inquisiton you can see that, everyone hates the grey wardens. Hawke's journey was like: You take one step forward, two steps back. Cassandra and the others only saw 2 icons. They only needed the Warden or Hawke because they already had an influence. They treated them as puppets. Alistair knew where she is. Varric knew where he is. But they only shared this information when it was REALLY necessary. They saw how the world treated the Warden and Hawke. They just wanted them to get a happy ending. Hawke's and my Warden's entire life was a fight. They fought for their titles, and for the respect of others. When it comes to the Inquisitor. Idk...it felt like she was at the right place, at the right time. Your hand glows green sooo.... everyone loves you know I guess. But that's just me mumbling.

inquisition lacks everything. From how the characters look and how the qunari race looks (omg), to how the inquisitor is treated by everyone. Like you are 15 minutes in the game, you closed your first rift for no reason and with zero effort, and you are already a hero and everyone in the haven bow to you. And these dumb cringe moments are everywhere through the game The only bright side was the trespasser dlc, that felt like it was literally made by different team because of how good it was

I really loved the interactions of the characters in DAII; the way they feel about certain things, about the main character and each other. I think that while the story of DAII is setting up the civil war between mages and templars for Inquistion, the main highlight of the story is Hawke and his/her relations with his/her companions. The story of this game has a special place in my heart because it made me think on my actions. In fact,I was very surprised to find out that being diplomatic all the time does not help at all. Anyways, moving on to my conclusion, this song reminded me so much of the 40 hours I've spent interacting with other characters. Can't wait for Inquistion :D

DA2 was probably my favorite out of the three, just because of Hawke. They are my overall favorite character and I got so attached. The companions in DA2 in my opinion, were the most likeable and the most interesting. Sure, it lacked connection to the main story, sure, locations were repetitive BUT it was still a memorable and fun game and hearing this song at the end of it, sealed the deal for me. I love that they used such a powerful song for it's end.

I think is funny that people who loved this game uses the ''Varric storytelling'' argument.Why the scenarios is so lazy?because Varric can't say much details about the place.Why the combat looks like an anime fight?because Varric wants to make Hawke a badass.Why the quests with Varric are more detailed?because he was there.
@coleaustin8523

honestly, it's pretty true. Why should Varric spend the time detailing the nooks and crannies of the various caves and dungeons Hawke goes into? People don't care about that sort of thing unless it's an amazing cave or dungeon, so just saying 'we went into a cave' is probably how he covers most of them.

This comment is going up be a ramble bc I just finished it last night. Hearing this song, while you sit there, watching the credits roll...hits different. I heard the song before I finished the game so I was like "oh yeah this is cool" Now I understand why it was at the end. This was the first DA game I picked up, back in 2014-15, and due to circumstances I wasn't able to finish it until last night. Bittersweet in that way, and now I just have this sense of overall sadness and grief for Hawke and the entire situation. It really feels like there could have literally been no way to prevent or even get out of that situation, and no matter what, the whole thing was just fucked. Origins left me exhilarated. 2 left me depressed. That's the big difference between the two titles, I think. In Origins, you won, in a way. In 2, there was no winning. And worse yet, you had the chance to lose literally everyone along the way, and while in Origins there's definitely a way to do that, it feels more like people are really willing to stick by you, even if they disagree. I almost lost Fenris but managed to keep him on in my fight against the templars, but I lost Isabela and Carver in that playthrough. I could have killed Anders though my Hawke decided that he needed to see the consequences of his actions, so he stayed on (plus, healing. Unfortunately he's the only healer and I'm probably going to make my next playthrough a Spirit Healer so I can yeet him). Anyway I loved this game, even if it didn't quite have the same "flavor" as Origins--which I actually think is a good thing. It's like siblings: they all come from the same place and have similarities but are also completely different. OH SPEAKING OF ANDERS: first of all, what the fuck, and 2nd of all, THE WAY F!HAWKE SOUNDED SO ANGUISHED ONCE SHE REALIZES WHAT ANDERS DID/WHAT SHE HELPED DO?? "You're a murderer. The blood of all these people are on your hands" My soul left my body

It was especially difficult to make that choice because of the time you spend with him in DAO Awakening. He was extremely light hearted in that dlc and obviously his experiences took their toll on him seeing how much more serious he was in DAII.

My choice was the same with you, I killed him out of mercy. It is physically painful seeing him losing himself, that is just so sad. My Hawke romance him too but I just felt, no this is just too far, you're hurting as well, I cant see you go on like this... and killed him
@VenhedisKaffas

I couldn't kill him. Maybe I should've, but my Hawke romanced him and though I know the way I've written my character means their relationship will suffer a bit because of what Anders did, I know Hawke still loves him and it would have broken him if he had killed him. Also, the way Hawke kills Anders seems kind of cruel. A stab in the back on a spot that makes him die from blood loss probably.

I loved Origins, I loved Awakening, and I think I may have loved Dragon Age II the most. After Meredith died and I watched Varric tell the last of our story, I felt a little sad because the game was over, and I had no sequel to pick up right away. Then the credits started rolling and this song played and I felt the strangest sense of loss I had ever felt, and it was towards a video game. To be honest, I even teared up. I'm seriously looking forward to DA3.

Everyone says "how sad Hawke's life is", but nothing sadder than being a Cousland: your family is betrayed by your father's right hand. You face the murder of all your loved ones: your night of love with Dairren ends badly, in his death. Then you find your sister-in-law and your nephew dead (a little boy who was just beginning to live), then you face the fall of your home, you find your teacher and your nanny killed. You say goodbye to your lifelong friend knowing that you will never see him again. In the end, you run away from home, leaving behind your parents, who sacrifice their last minutes so that you can escape alive.Your warden does not know what happens to your brother, depending on what you choose, you can see him again or not.

I feel like this is just the perfect song for the Solavellan hell. I'm sure girls, who share my love/hate attitude to Solas would understand. He's a liar, he concealed his true identity and the reason why we got into all that mess in the Inquisition. He's a thief, he stole many things, Lavellan's heart, Mythal's power, as well as the best crafted gear I gave him when he left at the end lol =) He's a ghost haunting Lavellan in her dreams. And I don't know about you, but my Lavellan certainly loves Solas so much she would let him kill her if it comes to that.

No, in DA2 we get a story where the line between good and evil is blured out. And instead of playing a hero whose mission is laid out right from the beginning (Like; gather army and allies and fight in an epic battle where you will defeat the leader of the enemy forces), we have a person who is just trying to get by and in doing so gets caught up in events he/she can´t escape from.

I love this game with every fiber of my being. I got to know it the day it came out, because I was really looking forward to it after Origins and Awakening. And you know what, they are different games. Origins is an epic telling us about so many significant events that it's hard to count them. Dragon Age 2 in turn is a local history game. It is about the person, who confidently walked forward through the hardships, stumbling yet unstoppable. It is about a man who lost everything and gained something new. This game has a lot of flaws, but it is Hawke's story that more than covers them all. I have played it a dozen times, and I will definitely play it again just to experience those very feelings. The grief, the sadness, the satisfaction of accomplishment.

@GOINxPOSTAL Exactly, and i also think it fits because, its as if the whole game is about trust and friendship. And thats exactly what this song is trying to say. In the game you build friendships and romance with the other characters and stuff and based on what you do ultimately decides what happens to everyone and perhaps to you in the very end and also what cassandra will think about you. So the song does fit perfectly, i got so emotional when i beat this game, i never want DA games to end.

The first time I was playing the game , I chose to side with the mages and the reason entirely was because Bethany was taken into the circle of magi. I felt like I had to protect Bethany at all cost since she's Hawk's sister. I didnt know that if I took her and Anders into the Deep Road, she would be a grey warden because I chose not to bring her along. I couldn't resist Hawk's mother eyes that were so desperately wanted me on not to bring Bethany along In the end I was so glad that I was with the mages since Meredith was crazy and wrongfully judging and punishing the mages because of the red lyrium

I always hated the templars throughout the game. They disgusted me with how they treated the mages. All over the use of blood magic. I felt they needed to feel some consequence when i sided with the mages and looked to eliminate the templars. As of Anders I dragged him along side me maybe to let him set things right. I would have done the same thing in Anders position to be honest. The Circle does not solve anything. You either go to The Circle and serve the templars and be prisoners or die. It's just too much injustice on their part.

DashingNative That is a very well written and thoughtful response to a rather disturbing comment.
