Dragon Age II, - End, The Mage Who Sided With The Templars

You know what I really like about dragon age 2, the ending is a rare one, in that both sides were right about each other. The mages were practicing blood magic, while Knight Commander Meredith was going insane.

Having just played through both endings I didn't really like siding with either of them. I side with Mages and I end up killing more mages and demons than I do templars. Including Orsino anyways. I side with templars, I find out Orsino was partly responsible for my mother's death so I kill him gladly. Still kill meredith and the templars bow to me and I don't have to flee the city. I guess I'll stick with mages, but they've been such a pain in the ass lol. On second thought I think I do prefer the templars. I see it as damage control over rebellion or persecution. My hand was forced by Anders (who I killed).

It's funny that Meredith is set up as the big bad who is insane and paranoid even before the sword's influence yet despite her extremist reaction, she was 100% right about Oraino and this circle. Except Bethany... who you can convince her NOT to kill. Thus scene shows how crazy she is. She's won, abd the Champion sides with her, yet she still wants to kill him. That is why she's evil. Because Orsino, she's still ultimately about power and control.

I did this ending on my first play through and it was insane. My character had been burned and betrayed by so many of her fellow mages, and when anders used her to blow up the chantry, she was done trying to stick up for them. She had grown to love Kirkwall, and knew that the coming fight would kill thousands of innocents, so she sided with the templars to keep casualties to a minimum. And honestly, all the templars bowing to a mage, the one their order to supposed to hunt and destroy if they show any sign of demonic influence, shows that the templars and the mages can work together and change their systems for the better, at least that’s what my Hawke thought

My first character was a very practical mage who believed that the current system is flawed, but better than any possible alternative. Templars can be misguided, but mages can be terrifying abominations. Also I remember how mages tried to coerce you into following their side and they ended up as blood mages if you didn’t support them.

Kirkwall was one big blood mage/abomination nest, pretty much everyone there was doing something they shouldn't do. As Hawke the only thing you can do at this point is damage control. Kill everyone infected, spare everybody you can and hope for the best.

But the only thing I'm wondering is if the city itself can be blamed for that knowing what it has been standing for throughout the history and the special persecution mages there face. Blood magic is absolutely evil, but many of the mages turned to it out of desperation and because they were being antagonized and hunted by the templars.

I think I was more sympathetic in Origins but for me in DA2 they nearly always only bring up their plight and how they're oppressed literally only after they've begun to dabble in the dark shit that they are expressly forbidden not to do. They give the player character every reason to doubt them and then ask for lienency. Like why play victim after you're knee deep in blood magic. Edit: like Merrill HATES you if you do anything to go against the murderous blood mages in that quest you do for Thrask.

The irony is the Knight-Commander ends up using a Lyrium-infused (i.e. magic) sword to fight against Hawke when the cause she fights against is containing sorcery. The statues became alive due to the magic in the sword, thus Merideth becomes a mages! Lol. Ironic.

Meredith is anti-Blood Magic and anti-demons, she doesn't just hate mages "Grrr mages I don't like you!" would be a terrible character. And using Lyrium (to "Strengthen" their powers) is something every ordained Templar does. They also use phylacteries, a harmless form of blood magic. But neither of those things make them actual mages.

What happened to me in this game near the end was weird. I sided with the templars and it was so hard, I couldnt get past the courtyard(first area after choosing). I tried it 10+ times and I get wiped out by those monster mages constantly shooting fire balls. I reloaded and switched to mage side and it was a cake walk. I dont understand how the difficulty could do a 180 like that.

yeah, the first fight in the courtyard was tougher than any boss fight afterwards, especially without anders who could heal. I also had to do that fight like 10 times, but each boss later has fallen on first try. But it's understandable that the mages are tougher opponents as they're broken as shit in DA:2. I've been wiped countless times by a random hidden bloodmage during my playthrough

In my first gameplay ever of this game i sided with the templars because of Anders fault. I thought that order must prevail and i think i cared about the city. I killed anders and joined the templars and when i saw all mages becoming abominations i also thought that i made the right choice. My brother carver who was with the grey wardens came to help me and then got confused about the side i was. It was funny . Although in the end i really didnt expect Meredith to try to emprision me.

MandarinB I think it's more like keeping order. Especially after DAI and what they talked about. Anarchy happened everywhere. But in my humblest opinion, Meredith's craziness wasn't without fair points. Besides, were I a mage, I'd rather a mage judge me than a templar.

There isn’t really a good or bad ending, since Meredith and Orsino die in both endings. The only difference is who you side with.

Because it was a mage (Anders) who is responsible for the destruction of the chantry and the mages in the Circle (especially Orsino) used blood magic and summoned demons. Now siding with Templars here seems more principled position as most of them aren't aligned with Meredith and see that she's deranged lunatic.

And how many resorted to blood magic, because of Meredith's atrocious methods? Probably most of them. Chantry is the oppressorm their politic is to enslave mages with a thethoric that kinda goes against Andraste word's. No one will convince me that bombing a chantry who had like 7 people inside was worse than Meredith performing Tranquility on a 11 year old girl. And this thing with magic shouldn't rule over him. Ironically it does. Magic is the only thing that defines mage's life - it rules over him anyway, cause it's the only trait by which they are defined. It means a circle, so a prison. Just because of magic. Siding with mages isn't bad, it's siding with the group that was opressed for hundreds of years cause some deranged priests saw profit in locking them up. Most of them aren't aligned with Meredith? Like, we have examples of Templars who went even farther than Meredith in their crazy methods. Even Cullen kinda digged Alric's tranquil solution. So making all mages tranquil and then raping them, cause you know, tranquil, free and living sex doll. And really, chantry deserved to be blown up. People say that Anders is a terrorist, but Chantry literally strated a war with the elves cause Orlais wanted Dales. And the cover was "elves are heathens and they didn't help us against the darkspawn".
