Funny, I had the same problem a few weeks back. My friend complained that DA 4 seemed to be stuck in development hell and I asked him what he was talking about because this game had only come out a few years ago. He gave me a funny look and reminded me that it had actually been the better part of a decade. In my defence, I'd never actually PLAYED the game and was probably mentally associating its release date with the last time I'd watched this review.

I'm not a regular gamer, and haven't owned any console until I got a PS4 "for the kids" for Christmas. I bought DAI on a whim and got totally drawn in by it - even despite the fact that it crashes the console about once a day. I initially thought the whole crafting thing would be too much effort, but after a while it triggered my Aspie side, and it turned out to be the best way to get myself kitted out and able to actually win some battles. By the end though, looting had become pointless because my crafted weapons and armour were far better than anything I could loot, and I was so well equipped that I didn't even break a sweat (or use a health potion) during the final showdown. Nonetheless, this being my first foray into RPGs for over a decade, and despite not being a fan of the fantasy fiction genre in general (primarily because I can never be arsed to keep track of all the made-up Proper Nouns), I was blown away by the game's scale and beautiful rendering, found aspects of the story strangely compelling, and got 120+ hours of enjoyment out of it, which makes it pretty good value in my book.

Also, I've been wearing the same crafted armor and using the same crafted weapons for almost the whole game because I've yet to find anything more effective as a loot drop. Yahtzee didn't give the crafting system a lot of credit. He clearly was crafting with low level materials and schematics. You have to play more to get better stuff for crafting.

+Wakka Flakka Burn The Al Bhed Very true, I think Yahtzee misses the point quite a lot, and in this case he missed it pretty badly. The crafting system in the game is not a core element so you don't even need it to move forward, however if you do want to use it it is very well made. Therefore it is an EXCELLENT FEATURE. I just hate how much he whines about AAA games taking graphics as a higher priority than gameplay, which this game does not do, and then chooses to ignore the gameplay changing features such as the crafting system.

Not gonna lie, I thought this video was a bit unfair. Not mostly, but I did got a vibe of a "too much content" complain, which is sad, because we already have an industry that gives us most of the time a 6 hour campaign in exchange for 70€, and this is one of the few games that actually deserves the money you pay for it. Also, It's understandable the facial animations are not the best on the industry since theres a TON of dialogue, mandatory and optional, and on top of that there's still the ark branching aspect, so if they did made facial capture to every single line, the budget of this game would be over the roof, so it's a compromise you have to make, and quite the fair one.

Haven't played the game, but as far as mechanics are concerned I will point out that in in-game cutscenes facial animations for speech are usually not captured individually but run through a phoneme program. TF2 for instance has a pretty good system, all character facial animation is calculated in real time, combining phonemes with their current facial expression. The same has been done for a long, long time; even GTA:SA had a sort of phoneme system in which characters' lips would just sorta wiggle depending on the volume of their current speech file.

TBH. you did make a lot of excellent points, and a lot of these were true facts, and this video opened my eyes to a lot of problems the game has, but I still love the game faults in all. first because, while all the side missions that seem the exact same are very annoying, you don't have to do most of them, also I love having the other character arcs, unlike Skyrim, (which is still an amazing game) many characters have personalities, goals, faults, and actual depth and development. I love that the DA franchise goes so far to make the characters relatable and real, in Skyrim even your companions are merely weapons with no depth, the closest one coming to have any personality was Marcurio the sarcastic mage, and all he ever had to his character was his sarcasm. I love how this game goes out to make the world and characters relatable and connectable to the player. It makes you feel a more personal affects to your actions, in Skyrim I gave no fucks about going around and killing random people or robbing houses because it didn't really affect anyone most of the time. In DA most of your actions have an impact on other characters in the game, and in the world around you. Some people may not like that and just want to get to the action, which is fine, but I'm a girl who loves depth and story to the games she plays, so I find this game, despite its faults, a great one to play.

It took me three tries to really get into this game, and having just finished it (and enjoyed it) the solution to all my problems would have taken like 10 minutes to implement: Make it clear how little the power & influence gathering side quests matter. Huge, dozens-of-hours-long swaths of time that I dumped into getting every single portal closed, every single camp founded, and so on, turned out to have no impact whatsoever, despite the game making it seem like that was really critical stuff that needed to happen for the Inquisition to make its way in the world. I ended the game & DLCs with over 100 power left, and that was AFTER I decided to make my final attempt to enjoy it by only doing story or story-adjascent quests and leave the entire hundred-strong battery of mopping-up quests to rot. If I'd played it as the game strongly implied I should, it would be a 200-hour-long game (likely their real intent in making it that way) with little blips of content every 10 hours or so at best.

Thank you for bringing up the MMO feel, because that really undermined the game for me. There's this set of good (but not great) companions, an engaging plot, a huge world... aaaaand you'll spend most of your gameplay picking flowers and killing random monsters that are standing between you and the plot relevant enemies. It felt like a single player MMO. Not a good feeling. The companions really didn't stick out to me, but that might just be personal taste. I literally had none of those troubles with Oblivion, enemies were getting tougher as I was getting tougher, it kept things interesting (Though ridiculous as bandits later were using high-end gear and sometimes better than mine), and the enemy Variety was getting bigger (i.e in Oblivion planes at first you see very few daedras, mostly scamps and other small demons. As you level you get Flame Atronachs, Summoners, Heavily Armored Daedra...And so on)

Wait... loading times are long? On my PS4 it loads in 2 seconds. That's when I'm transferring to a new area. I don't get any time to read the first 2 words of the hint cards when I load a saved game in the same area. And the crafting is actually really fun. I made a Battlemaster Coat armor for my WARRIOR that has a %10 chance to cast Hidden Blades for every hit I land, and a Shield that has a %10 chance to cast Immolate (a explosive fire spell) for every hit I land. So when I have Hidden blades casted, it adds the probability to cast immolate during the skill. It's fun smacking a enemy then see vague purple clones of me stab him 4 times then he explodes in fire panicking while his other teammates catch fire aswell

(SPOILERS) another thing that fell flat: i played through with a friend of mine who hadn't touched the games or expanded universe (ugh) before and the thing that stood out to me is that she didn't give a fuck about most of the characters. for example, in the fade, when deciding to sacrifice hawke or stroud she chose stroud because she didn't know who the fuck this hawke guy was and why she was supposed to care about his bearded ass as opposed to the wardens, who she at least knew shit about. same with varric, cassandra (to a point), fiona, alistair, coryphyus (again, to a point) and basically every other cameo that was featured prominently didn't elicit empathy from a new player. i love the game and its expanded universe but it's really inaccessible to anyone who isn't completely sunken into the lore

@XxRobloxPlayerxX18 жыл бұрын
+Spearka Kind of. They do share some simularities, but nothing that major to say the two games are completely identical. Mass effect for the weapons, mostly you just have to play missions and receive better upgrades. In dragon age, at least inquisition, you have to go out in the world and actually find resources to upgrade your weapons, including the armor. Combat is obviously different. Mass effect you keep shooting till something dies, Dragon Age you keep swinging the sword until something dies.

I really liked DAI during my first playthrough. I had a fun time, the characters were entertaining, and despite much of the game looking as though it had been soaked in olive oil for a day, its landscapes were rather nice to look at. So, upon completion of my first game, I thought I might have another go at it with a new character to see how things changed depending on my decisions. Upon creating my character and getting through the tutorial, I began to realize that the only thing that had made the game entertaining to me was my sense of curiosity, pushing me toward completing the story and getting to know my companions. Now that I had already completed the game and done my companion quests once before, I started realizing that the game itself didn't really impress me. The combat was the most glaring issue. My first character had been a ranger, and I had used a bow the whole time. My second was a melee warrior, and I must say that DAI's combat is either incredibly unintuitive and boring, or I am a complete imbecile. I won't count the latter out, it's a possibility. That being combined with the incredibly frustrating MMO-esque resource gathering and crafting, I found that every instance of actual gameplay simply felt like a barrier between me and the actually interesting bits of the game. I would have a great time speaking with my companions, interacting with the lovingly written characters and uncovering the wonderfully entertaining story (which I did enjoy still, despite already knowing where it was all going), but then the game would toss me into this mess of seemingly unnecessary abilities and a tactical mode which I never had any use for, and I would get to watch my character and an enemy NPC wail on each other for a few seconds before one of us would drop dead and I would either finish the job with one of my companions or move on to the next game of "who-produces-the-biggest-numbers." At one point I just closed the game in the middle of a raid on an enemy encampment and started browsing reddit, because I had simply stopped having fun, and getting to the next tidbit of story no longer felt as though it justified me playing any further. I would have genuinely loved DAI if most of the game hadn't proven so prohibitively boring.

I get the feeling that Yhatzee, for all his reviewing prowess, doesn't appreciate RPGs that much. I played through this in just over a week. Longest game I've ever played, and I nowhere near completed it. "Faffing about" is most of the game tbh. Its a lot of fun too. I don't really think the whole collection thing was well thought through, I admit, but everything they did was completely redundant.
@Costar5810 жыл бұрын
Baldur's Gate 2 (With it's expansion) is much, much longer AND the quests are actually more than simple 1-2 step tasks (Investigating a strange series of murders in a villiage only to discover a group of monsters UNRELATED and brokering a trade deal between that group and the villiage, then hunting down the previous group investigating murders, rescuing a halfling Paladin, fighting werewolves and then stop-...You feel me? That's just one sidequest)
@midlifecrisi10 жыл бұрын
Radosław Hołdys Most of the quests in Inquisition were rather deep? I found them to be. Twists, suprise turns, unexpected endings, amusing dialogue... How long did it take you to finish BG2? I've finished BG1, took me about 15 hours.
@Costar5810 жыл бұрын
midlifecrisi hates Google + The main story in BG1 is rather short (it took me about 20 hrs, but with the sidequests it was easily over 150hrs). I also didn't mean the Main Quests, the quest I described from BG2 was a SIDEQUEST it was completely optional... So was another where you are framed for murder of a group of Paladins by a Red Dragon posing to be a Lord and...Again totally optional.

Radosław Hołdys I'm talking about side quests too, well, sort of the main quests of areas, but not actual required quests. @thomaswillard62678 жыл бұрын
Kind of sort of, not really. You only actually see the current archdemon partway through the game. And even at that you never interact with the evil forces aside from brief fights until the very end where you get a major fight. Inquisition has you regularly interact with red Templars and Mages and constantly run in Not - Satan or his lieutenants.

I really loved this game, but the first 10-15 hours were a bit of slog. The game takes a while to get off the ground and some of the side-quests are completely boring (collecting shards). It's the only class that allows you to solo a dragon on Nightmare from what I've seen.

I'm a big fan of Bioware games and a lot of them tend to have similar problems, and unfortunately some of them could have been easily avoided and were finally avoided with Dragon Age Inquisition: 1. Bioware games are pretty much intense therapist simulators. I'm pretty confident that I could walk away with tons of cash as an expert in psychological and emotional therapy after playing through a single Bioware game or franchise and having to deal with the various characters' subplots and making them happy while subsequently making the rest of my team happy as well. Unfortunately while in KOTOR that was great in that the subplots were mostly private and exchanged with each other either in their private spot aboard the Ebon Hawk or in quiet whispers out in public while the others ignored you, dealing with subplots in the Dragon Age series can be in your face. Trying to get Morrigan amused enough by you to be able to get jiggy with her while subsequently keeping Leliana, Sten, Alistair, and the dumb dog happy as well is tough. 2. Bioware games pre-Inquisition are geared for Space Travel. This was a problem I had with Dragon Age: Origins. I feel like half of the game's potential was skipped over because instead of walking or riding a horse to get from Ostagar to the Dales, the Circle Tower, or Not-Ironforge I just open a map and click a button...and every now and again I get to run into a random starfighter battle-er, I mean, highwaymen or Darkspawn raiding party to remind me that I'm still in a fantasy world. I'm okay for fast travel but not if it replaces realism entirely. Thankfully to the best of my awareness Inquisition fixes this. 3. Sidequests galore...yeah. In Star Wars I can forgive this because you kind of expect an evil Sith Lord to wait until you are in view just to make it a point to be a butthead about things. However in other games sidequests can be a problem. Having just escaped from a massive horde of Darkspawn that have a potential headstart on me on the way to the rest of Ferelden you'd think that Lothering would be little more than smoke and ashes by the time we arrive, but not only did we manage to, somehow, get ahead of the Darkspawn Horde but apparently we have enough time to make traps for people, kill highwaymen, make a few healing potions, and not only recruit a couple of new companions but accomplish side-quests for the NPCs that led you to them to boot. In fact it's only after you leave Lothering that the Darkspawn show up at all, making you wonder if you were the force that drove them back...it's yet another reason why I feel side quests just get in the way and have become a bit of a waste of time rather than something fun to do on the side. Anyway, that's my two cents.

To be honest, I think DAI has the most boring combat out of the series. As terrible as the wave encounter design was (at first) in DA2, the actual act of killing people in it was REALLY fun. It was super entertaining to watch rogue hawke leap at a target when I clicked on them, and so on. Even mages had fun autoattacks with the staff, and I love how mages (and varric) would just club people with their weapons when they got too close. In Inquisition I just feel like I'm holding down a trigger. Because I AM holding down a trigger. It doesn't feel very involved. That plus having to manually chase targets down actually forced me to stop playing a rogue, for the first time in Dragon Age history. I LOVE Rogues, they are my favorite class by a mile, but this game made me not want to play one anymore, and that's really shitty. I ended up rolling mage because I didn't want to manually chase down targets, which is a really dumb decision to have to make, I think. It does GREAT at having loads of good characters (When you weren't losing out on banter due to a stupid bug, that is), and the story was wonderful. But there was inevitably going to be a reduced presence of the main character due to them going with a "pick whatever you want" type of character again, which inherently restricts dialogue options because they have to have a wider array of things available to say. Overall it wasn't too bad, though. And I was impressed at how well they interrogated your character background into how everyone speaks to you. I love how they just refer to me by my last name, and at particular points my background is a subject of conversation, in a way that feels natural. I liked that a lot. Overall, it's a good game. But I just don't enjoy it enough to pick it up a second time. Ah well.

There are too many for me to be bothered to type down so I'll just jot a couple. 1- Not sure about console version but on PC you can select the appearance of your Hawke and (if you bothered to use The Keep) you can also change his/her class and personality, as well as a great many other things, which you failed to mention! 2- Depending on the difficulty level you choose, the crafting system can be so much more useful than you describe it as. For example, I was able to craft a staff for my level 16 mage that did more damage than a looted staff that required a level 18 wielder.

I much more enjoy the crafting than the main combat mechanics. Then again, when something like the ability to research, plan and utilize different material combinations to create better armor and weapons, and mainly because almost everything I crafted was better than the loot being dropped for most of the first Act.

Too many shitty fetch quests. I remember playing up until your 1st home gets destroyed and you rebuild the abondoned castle. I thought to myself "Man that story quest was awesome and now I've got this sick castle, what's next?" before it piled on another load of "Fetch X herbs and Y minerals"

A r c h a n g e l I remember having to complete them to gain more "Power" to open up more things at the War Table, I could be wrong though

Although you need to do side quests in vanilla to get power there are several "main" side quests in each region where they were specifically designed to be interesting to get the power like dennet or the rift in the lake in crestwood, you definitely never had to fetch a ton of herbs or minerals for power, that was completely for aesthetics and possibly also for armor modification.

There are shitty fetch quests. But you never have to collect herbs, not true at all.

I did the Fenris romace as FemHawke. Turns out he's still the same judgemental arse-hole in the romance as he was when you first met him
