Hardening Alistair and Leliana was very morally complicated. That innocence was commendable, but also a liability. Alistair would have bankrupt Ferelden's treasury to support his half-sister. If Leliana returned to spycraft, she'd have been as vulnerable as she was before fleeing Orlais.

@@sabbywins The fact that the signal was late is that indication. It was supposed to be an easy job, yet the two wardens were far behind the schedule. It can only mean one of these two things: 1. The Grey Wardens betrayed them and deliberately withheld the signal. 2. The darkspawn managed to breach the tower. It was the second scenario, but the tower was located behind Ferelden defensive line, which means the darkspawn have also managed to flank Cailan force from behind. The Hammer-and-Anvil plan would have failed because the Anvil had been compromised. Why would Loghain follow their original plan, when it was obvious the battle did NOT go according to plan? But for argument's sake, let's say Loghain join the battle. What would that accomplish? 1. There's no guarantee they could reach Cailan in time, since the idiot volunteered to be on the frontline. 2. Loghain would be risking thousands of soldiers just to save one idiot king who wasn't even supposed to be on the battlefield. If that happens, they may not have enough numbers to hold the next assault, or to repel the Orlesians if they invade Ferelden again. 3. It won't prevent the horde from entering the mainland, not when there are multiple Deep Roads entrances within Ferelden. We know there are such entrances in the Hinterlands, Gwaren and Amaranthine. 4. Even if they somehow managed to win the battle and kill every darkspawn on the field, the absence of the Archdemon means they won't be be any closer to ending the Blight. Ten thousand casualties means nothing to the horde. The shaperates of Orzammar estimated the Fifth Blight horde was even larger than the First Blight. 5. Even if the Archdemon *does* appear in the battle, they would have no way to kill it - not when the Wardens are trapped on the frontline fighting for dear life. Stupid Duncan sent them to the meat grinders, knowing full well Wardens are the only ones who could kill Archdemon.

Gonna play this sometime on my gamming laptop. It can normally games from that era on max settings with no trouble, and can probably even handle Fallout 4 on... higher settings, though I use relatively low ones to run it smoother. I'll keep this in mind for when I get around to it.

I hated turning on Alastair, but this made the most since for my character. I played a city elf who at the start of the game HATED humans. And didn’t really give a crap about the greywardens/darkspawn cause he was stuck in the alienage. But after Ostagar, and working with Alastair, Lelianna, Wynne, and falling in love with Morrigan, he learned that not all humans are the monsters he thought they were. And became a better leader and grey warden because of it. My warden at the beginning of the game would have killed Loghain without a second thought. But after everything that he’s been through, he knew that even though he still hated Loghain for his betrayal, knew that his personal feelings would have to come second to the fate of Thedas, and if sparing him meant there were more grey wardens to throw at the arch demon, then he’d happily hand him that darkspawn blood. Because it’s what his friend Alastair taught him.

In my canon, Warden is a female Human Mage who romances Alistair and stays his mistress, marries him to Anora, Loghain lives to father Kieran so we get another Warden in the world, Bhelen king, anvil saved, Mages saved, werewolf curse cured, saved Amaranthine, saved the Architect, everyone survived keep battle, Hawke male mage Merril romance, Isabella came back with tome but killed Arishok anyway, Carver is a Grey Warden, sided with the mages, still working out Inquisition, so far saved and recruited mages, which is canon anyway the exception being whether you recruit or capture them

Morrigan is ruthless and bloodthirsty, i recorded all 3 games playthrough in which i denied morrigan her way. The most pleasure was in DAI when i didnt let her drink from the well, me being elven mage lol. I wonder what will become of her in the 4th game, assuming we can import choices.

I went this route to fullfil Duncan's desire to protect the child of his friends and to not deprive the Grey Wardens of a fine warrior. Alistair gets to live and Loghain pays penance for his crimes against Ferelden by bearing the taint of the very beings that threatened to wipe his beloved country off the map.

Alistair is a naive man who nver learned how the real world worked. Once he finally gets broken of the assumption that your Warden is a pushover who can't lead, he is the perfect Grey Warden. I couldn't kill him once he realized he was wrong.

To harden Alistair, you need to do his personal family quest and then pick the dialogue option that says "Everyone is out for themselves; you should learn that" or "Get over it" (might be paraphrasing but similar to that). If you were too nice to him after the meeting with his sister, he remains softened and will throw a tantrum at the Landsmeet.

I’m pretty damn sure I hardened Alastair. I told him he wasn’t alone and that he had me as family. Unless that didn’t hardened him then I completely fucked up and I really don’t want to restart this god damn game.

I then realized I never told him such a thing so I got pissed and started a new game. I’m one of those people where if there’s a good ending to a game and there’s a guide on the internet to follow, then I’m following that guide to the good ending to a T cause I love good endings.

before landsmith agree to make her queen, then broker a marriage between alistair and anora. anora will side with you, then if alistair is hardened he will marry her. if loghain dies anora will cancel the agreement.

that's why I love DAO characters feel human both in emotion and action. both Alistair and Morrigan do terrible things to the player if they don't get what they want (abandoning you and saying terrible things to you) although the player maybe the most important person to them or their best friend yet just like in real life they lose their cool and say and do things they don't mean yet both come to regret it later on and try to fix things Alistair in awakening seems to return friendly to the PC and Morrigan tries indirectly to have you come with her through the eluvian by telling you about your son and i whole heartedly believe both will regret it for the rest of their lives if you made the ultimate sacrifice

This line of thinking sounds more like "why doesn't Alistair do exactly what I want?" You want to mold the characters so that you can be friends with everyone and have the "bestest" ending of: being the hero, the one who killed the archdemon, the one grey warden who didn't die, the one who stopped Loghain by pardoning him, who was friends with everybody despite doing things that are not according to their principles and motivations. All of this sounds much more of a tantrum than anything Alistair ever did.

@@redknight5974 The fact is, Duncan would never approve of Alistair choosing vengeance over duty. "I am sorry, but a Grey Warden's duties take precedence even over vengeance." (Duncan in Human Noble prologue) And unlike Howe, Loghain was not driven by greed. He did it all for Ferelden. 1. He retreated from Ostagar to preserve the army. Who knows what would happen in the Battle of Denerim, if Loghain had thrown away all his soldiers at Ostagar. 2. He poisoned Eamon to prevent him from dividing the country. He knew Eamon would never accept Cailan's death, and that Eamon has enough influence to rally the other nobles against him. 3. He sold the elves to obtain the fund to equip Ferelden army. It's terrible, but if they couldn't stop the Blight then everyone will die, including the elves.

Well he didn’t execute Alastair, realistically making Loghain a grey warden makes absolute 100% sense. Alastair shouldn’t be so against it either, one of the grey wardens sole purposes is to seek out conscripts and recruit, no matter what their crimes, Duncan conscripted that thief in the beginning if you remember. loghain is a commander of armies, with much experience and is a perfect match for what grey wardens look for, and if Duncan was alive, he’d have taken loghain himself. Alastair should honestly understand why you’d conscript loghain
