You can give good arguments that many fighters from U7 deserve the MVP status: Goku for UI, Vegeta for lending his remaining energy to Goku, Freeza for not acting on his own accord & costing them the match, but the fact that 17 was there until the end, nobody really predicted that. Plus, he had plenty of awesome moments throughout the ToP.

Definitely. He was the first to visibly damage Jiren. He 1v1'd Toppo long enough for Gohan and Frieza to take out Dyspo. He put Toppo and Jiren in the perfect position to be eliminated but Frieza got cocky both times and waited for them to get a power up. He's the only reason Goku and Vegeta weren't eliminated a lot sooner by Jiren, Frieza wasn't eliminated by Toppo, and all of U7 weren't taken out by Aniraza or Damon. Him holding off Jiren was the only reason Vegeta was able to get any energy to give to Goku. And this is just from the last third of the tournament.

In that final shot, not only was it a callback to that classic saiyan saga scene, but the positioning of the two was very purposeful. In the original, Vegeta is framed far above Goku, indicating his sense of superiority towards Goku. Naturally now, the two are seen on the same x-axis, as Vegeta see's Goku as his equal, and ultimate rival.

Every time I watch this last scene, I'm just amazed at how well they show everyone running on fumes. 17 basically not moving an inch after Goku shows up, Frieza running out of enough power to stay transformed and is clearly desperate, and Goku himself not having enough power to fully commit to a basic SSJ transformation, which is a state as natural as breathing for him. This episode was the first one of DBS that made me genuinely concerned that there wasn't gonna be enough left in the tank to beat the antagonist.
