In this version of Gohan it kinda makes sense. Whenever he got angry he talked about eviscerating people but never fully snapped. So when he finally let go.. It makes sense that this would be the result. It IS the opposite which is the point. He held back because he was afraid to let it out. He feared if he gave in and killed someone as a result. He would never go back to normal. Thats why he was a pacifist in the first place and why he hates fighting. Not to mention his daddy issues. I loved this episode and your reaction to it

I do wonder about that too. If they make the buu arc (which I hope they do) it will be interesting to find out. I also wonder. Before he never gave full in. Now that he has does that change anything. Before it was blind rage. This seems to be far more focused. Maybe that will have some sort of effect as well.

People (myself included) got angry/disappointed that Gohan stopped training after this, but I think it's because we never truly got just how much he didn't like fighting. With this version, it makes much more sense that he would grow up the way he did.

Edginess isn't automatically bad. Honestly, I love this version of Gohan. He's always been a bit of a bloodthirsty sadist whenever he's about to snap in this abridged series. It being out of character is the point too.

Well, edgy is only use as a derogatory word when there is violence without any meaningful purpose, so yeah is bad. Other thing is to use the word in EVERY gore/bloody scene

Out of all the smack talk and edginess coming from gohan, I think my favorite edition is the part where Gohan calls Goku out for all the shit he's done. Brilliant writing there. I didn't think about how hypocritical Goku was being in that moment until then, and even if it doesn't fully justify Gohan doing the same, they at least addressed it much better here, to the point where I bought into it. They really built up Goku's regret for what he did and it paid off in the end. Goku finally explaining himself to gohan in the end and apologizing was sooo good and made it more impactful than the original. Another great job by TFS

Yeah, I agree . Something I saw from comments of the previous part was people complaining that Goku isn't that bad of a father because lots of his actions crappy actions are for the sake of the world or not his fault, usually the training or being dead. But at the same time there are a lot of actions he takes that are super selfish in spite of the world's condition like the ones addressed in the rant, and as picalo said the ends don't justify the means all the time. So having Goku die with cleaning up his mess in realisation was a good moment that if it wasn't an abridged would be a turning point in his character for the better.

Just to point out, when a Saiyan first goes Super Saiyan, their emotions as well as their power is amplified many times over... and given that anger is the key to the transformation, that's why the first time they transform they tend to become incredibly vicious. So while it may be out of character for Gohan to be that edgy, it's not entirely his own fault. Hitting Super Saiyan 2 must be a bitch for his emotional state... like puberty x1000...

+VileGlory I think he's referring to Gohan being "edgy" as a Super Saiyan 2. Obviously he wasn't exactly like how the Abridged series portrays him, but the whole point of Super Saiyan 2 at this point of the story is that it's a culmination of all the times he's snapped and gotten a rage power boost previously in the story. Gohan suddenly gets angry and bloodthirsty and violent and goes on an emotionally-fueled rampage until he calms down. In the Cell Saga, Super Saiyan 2 is exactly this but slightly more controlled. Gohan is more of a "silent-furious" than a "loud-furious" like he was all the other times this happened to him. And the characters acknowledge this in both the original series *and* the Abridged, that Gohan raises many red flags here in this new form that take his vengeance toward Cell too far thanks to his new attitude. That's why so many people in the comments are a bit peeved at Gohan being called "edgy" and "out of character" in this Abridged episode. Thematically, it was what the entire series was building up to. Especially in Abridged, where Gohan has been growing slowly more resentful over his father's stupid actions toward his enemies and calls him out on all of them in this episode.

See I dont really understand the gripe that this is out of character when thats the entire point of the scene. Gohan "letting go" wasnt just about him getting angry, it was about him dropping his previous ideology and world view. The entire point of Gohans struggle in part one was that if he let himself snap, then he wouldnt be himself anymore. He says it in this episode, he was afraid that he would loose himself, and in a sense, he did. However, this isn't the younger Gohan that simply got angry and threw a fit. He is entirely aware of what hes doing. Hes pushing aside everything he stood for because he has too, because the circumstances created by the people around him force him too, and he hates it. Every line, while very edgy, has the underlining sentiment of "You asked for this". As if Gohan does not want this, but knows he has to do this. Infact, he pretty much verbatim says this to Cell.

There's a nice parallel here. Trunks wanted to fight the villains of his time, but he wasn't strong enough to finish them right away and because of that Gohan died. So he went back in time to help Gohan fight the villain of his time, but Gohan wasn't strong enough to finish him right away and because of that Trunks died. And while History of Trunks did their whole story rather emotionally, it was the recent Xenoverse 2 that had Future Trunks meet with Gohan right before he went off to fight the Androids and die. That was a rather sweet moment that gives some nice closure to their story.

@@megaman37456 He's referring to a timeline in Xenoverse 2 where Future Trunks goes back to the future in order to talk to adult Gohan before adult Gohan flies off to die by 17 and 18. Trunks was knocked out when it originally happened so he never had closure. The guy meant Gohan dying, not Trunks.

Well, also think about it in another way: Gohan's experinced and seen so much torture, death, and messed up shit since he was roughly 4. Six years (since you take out his year in the time chamber) where even he was tortured and held hostage. He always felt so weak, and hardly remembered every time he snapped. So when he finally fully snaps, but has control, what does he resort to? What he's learned in his years of fighting: torture and humiliate your opponent until you break them. It's just that Gohan didn't kill him right after humiliating him.

Like 16 said, Gohan thought he was better than everybody else. That didn't change completely after his transformation, it's just that he had now abandoned his morals and held all his gripes up like a flag. Basically, he got rid of the one thing he usually held above everybody else (his principles and his orientation towards peace and harmony) in order to really let loose, but that also means that he really got to show everybody around him how he really feels about them, which mostly manifests in his extensive issues with his father, and with the extensively immoral and straight-up stupid decisions everybody around him kept making. Him screwing up at the end was sort of necessary to teach him humility, to make it clear to him that getting carried away and making wrong decisions is absolutely normal and very human, and that it's still possible for people to realize their mistakes and try to make up for them. Otherwise who knows where his rage would've carried him. If he continued being the cold-hearted killer devoid of morality he was in this episode, I don't see it going in a very good direction.

Cell is like Vegeta when he's winning, but Frieza when he's losing. He terrorizes everyone looking for a good fight, but as soon as he starts getting beaten he'll resort to dirty tricks. Kinda the perfect villain personality to enjoy a curb-stomp battle.

I liked the sinister feel of this SSJ2 gohan, because it sends a message that indulging in rage and violence is something to be afraid of rather than to celebrate. Also it shows that this is a negative thing that they've done to gohan, like yes they need his power but this transformation isn't good for him mentally, hence the "red flag" stuff. Also the negative comments feel like they work because even like he says, he hates being like that and he never wanted to, it was the people around him(mainly cell) who forced him to do it and since he's incredibly angry and unrestrained, now he lashes out a bit verbally.

Honestly how he acts in Ssj2 isn't surprising... I mean just remember back when Goku went Ssj1... Yeah he wasn't nowhere near as aggressive but 1. He has some control as he's an "adult" while Gohan's only a kid... 2. This is the second form in the series so the emotions generated are bound to be more worse especially since he's a kid... 3. I can't remember what I was gonna say... Anyways has anyone ever thought that if there was going to be a canon Legendary Super Saiyan(if we didn't already have one be made canon recently) that it should of been Gohan... I do... The Point is, DBZA Gohan ISNT DBZ Gohan. By Far. DBZA Gohan has real Fatherissues and deep hatred against his Father and all that Saiyans ect etc. And thats also a Point why he tried not to Snap. Actually this is completely in character for Gohan. Every time he snapped he shut off a part of himself. The other times he shut off his mind and went on full emotion. This time was different as he shut off his emotion and went full intellect. The repercussions just didn't faze him anymore. .... Well not until they were shoved in his face.

Edgelord, sarcastic, abrasive Gohan is actually quite amusing to me. You're still one of the first reaction channels I look to as soon as I watch a new DBZA ep alone, along with Tyrone Magnus :) Edit: I can actually see a path where Gohan goes villain after going SSJ2. I mean the way he looks & those glares he gives cell isn't just badass, it's almost dangerous in a way. Imagine for a second a timeline where that first Kamehameha wave obliterates cell entirely, and then Gohan realizes he *likes* the new form, and his overconfidence engulfs him. It's hard to see a timeline where he'd turn on his friends, but I'm sure I could find a way to make him at least want to kill Vegeta :D That would make an interesting story arc imo. I thought years ago that it was incredibly lame they turned him into such a minor character after this moment in the series. Least for a good while anyway.

Holy christ, that'd be a great Alternate Timeline arc to explore. Cell is dead, and everyone wonders "Hey Gohan, the fight's over. You can turn down the Super Saiyan now." And Gohan goes, "No....I like this. I'm the most powerful capable being on the planet." Goku, "Gohan please don't tell me you're getting a God complex from this." Gohan, "I'm not playing God. Up until now, I've been playing human." It could start with him enacting revenge on Vegeta for all the strife he's caused him. But of course it wouldn't stop there. It'd keep going until he finds himself reacting instinctively to kill his own friends. Imagine Gohan never powering down, staying in SSJ2 nonstop, getting stronger in it just like the training in the time chamber. It takes Goku a while, be he eventually realizes that he needs to clean up after his mistake. Goku takes a day in the time chamber to unleash SSJ2 himself, and he goes to confront Gohan, now supremely drunk on power to the point where he's just rampaging. Goku begs Gohan to return back to being his son again, preparing to do the necessary, expecting himself to be strong enough to beat his own son. But as Goku transforms to SSJ2, Gohan reveals that him staying SSJ2 constantly allowed him to reach a level beyond that, and Gohan transforms to SSJ3. Goku stands no chance and falls to his own son.

I would have loved to see evil, SSJ2 Gohan happen before the Freeza saga. Perhaps we throw an arc in there where Gohan destroys the dragonballs and / or Piccolo & Kami (in a whole Darth Vader killing Obi-Wan way lol), because the dragonballs are one of the few things he can't predict and can be used against him. Then the gang hears about Namek, Only Gohan beats them there somehow, and we have an entire story arc about the gang trying to wish back Goku to stop his son, and Gohan trying to destroy the Namek dragonballs, and then they all run into a super powerful Freeza. Golden Freeza off the bat? Goku + Vegeta + Freeza vs SSJ2 Gohan? Oh the fanfiction possibilities. And then, when they've killed Gohan, and he turns good, and they revive him as a good character...... Majin SSJ3 Gohan. Bwahahahah I hope someone's ready to go God to stop him this time...

Agreed. While it may not exactly be better than the original, it stands as a perfectly legitimate dub all its own. DBZA may as well be looked at as a perfectly valid alternate version of the story. Hell, over on Blind Wave, the guys have been going through the entire series (started a couple years ago and when they caught up they give TFS a few days to let the original video get more views before doing their own reaction and even then tell people to see TFS's video before watching theirs). Of the main three who watch the series, one is familiar with both DBZ and DBZA, one has only seen DBZ, and one has never seen anything, so is experiencing the story for the first time through the abridged series.

Well the only one that actually did something was Vegeta, even then it didn't amount to much more than a distraction. The rest of them just gave cell an itch on his back. The only reason why Cell was too strong for Gohan was because of the broken arm.

Everyone hates on edgy shit now because bullshit social media memes fucked it all up. Team four star did really good with gohan's character in my opinion. They did it right and it makes sense that he would be this way. This is way more in depth then just the " typical edgy pre teen with angst scenario" that everyone thinks it is because they can't seem to give it any real thought.

One thing to remember, both within the abridged and the true canon, is that when Goku for example first went super Saiyan, his attitude took a drastic shift towards the more sadistic and serious, and less comical or time. It wouldn't make sense for Gohan, going to the next level to have a similar reaction or a more extreme reaction to be honest

I think Gohan is an INFP, and trust me, when you make an INFP snap and they go into full Te grip, this is the result. Everyone thinks we're all sweet and innocent, and we try our best to live up to that. INFPs are extremely hard to piss off because we much prefer to avoid conflict. But when you succeed in making us truly, deeply angry on an existential level, this is 100% the result. And we'll judge ourselves harshly for it afterward. But, the thing is, if you manage to make someone like me or Gohan angry enough that they snap and fall into Te grip, you probably deserve everything you're about to get. Pissing us off this much is not easy, so you probably did something very wrong.

i thought sociopath Gohan was really fitting. You get to see more of who he really is as a person later in the episode - but it makes sense for him to be drunk with power and want to make Cell suffer. It's true to the source material, just hammers home the point a bit more that Gohan has gone away and left a killing machine in his place. I thought TFS brought it back really well too with Gohan's reaction to his dad's sacrifice.

Referring to Gohan being "edgy" as a Super Saiyan 2... Obviously he wasn't exactly like how the Abridged series portrays him, but the whole point of Super Saiyan 2 at this point of the story is that it's a culmination of all the times he's snapped and gotten a rage power boost previously in the story. Gohan suddenly gets angry and bloodthirsty and violent and goes on an emotionally-fueled rampage until he calms down. In the Cell Saga, Super Saiyan 2 is exactly this but slightly more controlled. Gohan is more of a "silent-furious" than a "loud-furious" like he was all the other times this happened to him. And the characters acknowledge this in both the original series and the Abridged, that Gohan raises many red flags here in this new form that take his vengeance toward Cell too far thanks to his new attitude. That's why so many people in the comments are a bit peeved at Gohan being called "edgy" and "out of character" in this Abridged episode. Thematically, it was what the entire series was building up to. Especially in Abridged, where Gohan has been growing slowly more resentful over his father's stupid actions toward his enemies and calls him out on all of them in this episode. Cell *wanted* him to snap and *says* so. Goku wanted the same thing, and did it out of a misunderstanding of Gohan's interests and personality in both versions. Super Saiyan 2 is a result of this.

Gohan wasn't out of character here. It's characteristic of the saiyans to lose themselves more and more to a cold, calm, arrogant persona (basically Vegeta's persona) with every level super saiyan they ascend to. In GT, Goku says he kind of loses control of himself when he goes SSJ4. Goku's voice actor has said that with every ascention, the sayian voice actors are told to speak in a slightly lower tone of voice to greater emphasize these SSJ characteristics. (Compare Goku's normal voice to when he first goes SSJ3.) In this video, Gohan is an 11 year old, and he's going SSJ2 for the first time. It makes perfect sense to say he'd lose himself to these super saiyan characteristics easily in this instance. It seems like they even lowered his voice, like they do in the canon series. TFS did this one exactly right.

To me it feels EXACTLY like what his character would do.. Because he has always thought that violence and killing is wrong, with goku and everyone telling him to do it he accepted, but only out of necessity.. he still felt it was wrong so now he acted as someone who is "bad" or like everyone wanted him to act.. but once he gets a more realistic view of everyone he can see it's not black or white like he thought before.. It's more grey

An abridged series isnt a parody, it just so happens that comedy is the best way to address all the issues in the show and to appeal to the audience. This is a common misconception, so technically, the entire series is their own vision of the show, while still holding the story.

"Edgy" is itself the excessive use of angst. From where I'm sitting, it's perfectly understandable that Gohan is like this, especially since the transformation itself is represented by emotional overload. So it's very angsty, but since it's fitting and plays into themes of the story, it's not really "edgy". Edgy would be like acting like that just from being told to do his homework. XD

@@MozillaVulpix What you don't get is that power turns Saiyans into vicious monsters until they learn how to control that power, as shown by Goku on Namek. As shown by the Great Ape transformation. As shown by Gohan's constant fits of rage through the series proper and its abridged accompaniment. For TeamFourStar to take that rage and turn it into blinding hatred of Cell, which causes one to want the person they hate to suffer, it's no different to how Gohan was in canon. Rage, hatred and overwhelming power lead to overconfidence and absolute ruthlessness. That's in character. Moreover, it's human, not just a Saiyan trait. On a side note, you're entitled to your dislike of it all you want, but that does not automatically make it out-of-character development.
