Yes! Is very refreshing! I grew up watching the Spanish version. And when I moved to America, I couldn’t tolerate how different the English dub was. So I rented the orange brick DVDs from my library and saw it in Japanese. It’s a treat to see someone enjoy it in its original form.

47:03-47:09 Dragon Ball started airing in 1986, two years after the manga started serialization. Kazuhiko Torishima (Akira Toriyama’s editor at the time) felt the anime series was starting to dwindle in viewership, so he suggested that a soft reboot to the anime could revitalize interest, resulting in more promotional money for the show. This split allowed Dragon Ball to conclude after adapting chapter 194 of the manga and then start Dragon Ball Z with material from chapter 195 and onward. Another thing to keep in mind is that Dragon Ball Z aired a week after Dragon Ball’s final episode in 1989, maintaining the natural flow into the next arc that the manga had.

I love how Kuririn, Bulma and the Muten Roshi seemed more shocked to see Goku has a kid than they were to find out Goku is an alien. I think this was intentional how the first episode of DBZ parallels the first episode of Dragon Ball, showing the introductions of Goku and Gohan in the woods and different they are as characters. Both episodes include them being chased by a sabretooth tiger too, which was anime only for both episodes. Goku thrived in that environment while Gohan is completely out of his depth constantly calling for his parents to save him. The race that Goku is said to belong to is Saiya-Jin. Saiya is a rearrangement of the Japanese Yasai or vegetable. Jin, as I'm sure you know, means person or people of, so the Saiya-jin are the people of the Saiya or Saiyans, Vegetable People. Of course they are all vegetable puns; Kakarrotto is carrot, Raditz is radish and the Saiyan homeworld Vegeta is of course named after the English for Vegetable. The English dub pronunciation for Saiyan is wrong, they say Say-In or Say-an. It is Sai-yan, kind of like the colour cyan. Still, this mistake has persisted for over 25 years at this point. It doesn't bother me if people say Saiyan the way they do in the English dub, but it does bother me when people try to correct someone who is saying Saiyan correctly and tell them the incorrect dub pronunciation is the right way.

I'm surprised this wasn't included in the trivia. At Kame House Gohan introduces himself as 4 years old but in the original publication of the manga, he was introduced as 3 years old, but his age was changed to 4 in all future reprintings and for the anime. Toriyama even had Gohan on the title page for the following chapter saying he is 4 years old.

Many authors of shounen fighting manga are also Dragon Ball fans! However, the performance of "Dragon Ball" in the early stage is not very good. It is a long transition period, and the exciting parts are from the middle to the later stage.

Fun fact: There was no break between manga chapters when Dragon Ball Z originally released, so imagine coming from seeing Goku beat Piccolo and reject the job of basically becoming God of Earth just to see suddenly a man with a Tail appear and declare he is Goku's Brother and that they belong to a race of super strong Aliens. Truly one of the best retcons ever.

I watched Dragon Ball from the start, in the premiere! Every day one new episode(repeated 4 times). And there wasn't a way to get spoilers! I was extremely fan even before the first appearance of Piccolo, so can you imagine after that saga?. Sometimes they would repeat some sagas until new episodes were dubbed. They were like 5 years until the last episode of GT. That was insanity every day! Plus: The broadcast version on a CRT TV was way better than any version you can find today in modern TVs. Quality of image(colors and effects)far superior to what can be seen today!

Yeah, the beginning of the "Widow's Peak no Densetsu" Arc ! XD Also, I don't know if you remember Kayla, but I once told you about a japanese show in the late 80's, or early 90's, which filmed and interviewed the french dub team back then. And in that show there was also a sequence with the french and japanese VA of Gokû (and Gohan) where they were both doing the dub for the first scene of DBZ between Gokû and Gohan ! I think Akira Toriyama took the decision to definitively make Goku an alien from outerspace in Episode 122 of Dragon Ball. During Goku's fight with Piccolo Daimao, where Piccolo says, "There’s no way a human could ever contend with me!" Goku responds with, "I've got a tail, so maybe I'm not human, who knows?" This exchange makes me believe to a certain extent that it was the moment where Toriyama decided to take the story in a new direction, with Goku's otherworldly nature before the full reveal of his Saiyan origins here.
