You can tell by the opening that they had probably the best intentions on having gohan take over as the main hero.

From saiyan invasion arc to the end of cell arc was basically leading to having gohan take over. It was foreshadow that gohan have hidden potential. And in buu saga, supreme Kai unlocked it for him, he became the strongest fighter again but still got written off. Too much angry goku fans at that time

@@allanyang21 yeah i would figure that. Gohan wasn't compelling enough to become that main guy i assume. He didnt have the drive or the motivation like Goku had. Yeah he'll fight when he had too,, but it wasn't any goal to achieve. Could only guess viewership dropped too because of it so they basically had to write goku back in.

​@@yungdynamic471Turns out Gohan is just too much of a reactive character. Even in this arc he's completely dependent on other more active and extroverted characters forcing him to respond or react to events. Videl was more of a main character than he was for quite a bit. The situations and antics that surround him defined Gohan from the very start and Toriyama didn't know how to transition him into an active character capable of starting events and situations himself. Upsetting as I love Gohan but he truly is best when he's answering a call. Unlike his father who from the first moment you see him as a child is commanding all the attention of those around him and setting events in motion.

From this opening you can tell Gohan was meant to take over as the hero, but everyone liked the Goku Vegeta duo waaay more. They bring Vegeta back, they fuse into Gogeta, everyone on earth gets blown up but them, they fight kid boo together. Fast forward, we get Super, while Gohan becomes the shadow of who he once was, so sad. They really did him dirty.

I can see the vision here. The Buu saga becomes such a narrative failure eventually, but imagine a world where Gohan really stepped into his role and the Buu saga acted as an epilogue to Dragonball of sorts where Goku and Vegeta got to rest having successfully completed their character arcs and passed the torch.
