I've had a Dragon Commander deck for close to a decade. The best General? Scion of the Ur-Dragon. Versatility reigns supreme with Scion. Double-up on Scion's activated ability and one-shot an opponent with various combo-dragons. Fill the 'yard with Dragons by activating Scion's ability multiple times during your last opponent's end step, then cast a mass-recursion spell and win the game instantly with various ETB effects from the 'yarded Dragons or through hasty game-ending combat. Scion can protect itself from spot removal with open mana and various Dragons in the library, which only increase the number of Dragons in the graveyard. There are so many ways to win with this General. I have not considered replacing Scion with the Ur-Dragon or Tiamat at all. Scion. Every. Dragon. Ever.

Definitely agree. I built it without any infinite combos and still, it was an absolute house. You can handle nearly every situation. Thing is, your opponents will know about it after a few games. I left the one shot combos in it (obviously) and the fear this deck brings to the table is uncomparable. :‘D Took apart for that reason tho, because even if I just wanted to set up my graveyard value engine players always fear that you press the button and take them out. It was always arch-enemy from the very beginning.

Lathliss is underrated. Some see mono-red as a problem, I use it to my advantage by adding a lot of mana rocks to ramp. By the time the 5c Dragon player has figured out how to get to those 5 colors of mana, I've already flooded the board with Dragons and/or killed them with commander damage.

My friend runs this deck and its so cancer strong with every dragon that deals 4-5-6 damage to all your creatures and fiery emancipation. He wins often against decks that are many times the price of his own. Its pretty hillarious. Its very themed too. The sarkhans, DRAGON TEMPEST. Theres a card that gives his dragons double damage and damage can't be prevented this turn. Dragon throne of tarkir and... Embercleave. It goes crazy.

@Jake and Joel are Magic I have to admid, that I built my first Commander Deck years ago and ive chosen "Scion of the Ur-Dragon". Here is why: It costs me only 5 Mana, so if it got shot, I can easyly cast it a 2nd or 3rd time. Within the Ur-Dragon is way too expensive to cast it even once. Tiamat fills my hand maybe, but do I want to have 5 to 7 Mana Dragons in my hand? No. Not really. With the Scion I can use every single Dragon of the whole deck everytime, instant. If you attack me with Emrakul I chose "Keiga, the Tide Star" and use your weapons against yourself. U let the Scion alive, so that I can attack someone? U don't even block, so I can swing in? I choose 'Teneb, the Harvester' and reanimte him himself. To avoid the sacrifice I probably change the Scion into another Dragon... maybe I sacrifice him into the command zone, maybe I chose to to sacrifice him and react bevor this resolves and make em to Keiga... Scion of the Ur-Dragon is the best. In my oppinion. But I suggest you to take only Legendary Dragons within your team. Heroes Podium makes your legendaries very valuable and Dragon's Storm in combination with Beledros Witherbloom and some Dragons in your library that gives all Dragons haste ends the game very insane. With the Scion of the Ur Dragon you can get rid of any enemy.

Scion is definitely the strongest and most versatile of all of them. You can search for any answer you may need at the moment, and you can get it out multiple turns faster than Ur-Dragon and Tiamat. I personally played Ur-Dragon when it first came out for a few months and decided it was too slow to be competitive and switched to Scion. It's consistently been one of, if not, the strongest deck in my playgroup, and I don't regret switching one bit.

I built an Old Gnawbone deck and it's pretty gnarly! Once you start attacking, it doesn't really matter what your mana curve is because you're easily gonna get 8 to 12 treasures on the low end every combat

Beledros is in my tiamat commander deck, how many times I casted tiamat and searched for her, ur dragon, morophon, scion of the ur dragon and lathliss is crazy, especially with dragon tempest out already plus the 2 (3 red) sorry can't remember his name out already just bam bam bam instant dps per cast of a dragon(s) plus the combat damage is insanity

I think one of the biggest things with the ur dragon is you can put a permanent into play for free. Also I've killed many people with a tainted strike on the ur dragon when players have 50+ life.

i just finished building my Ur-Dragon deck, i haven't tried it yet, and i still need a few cards for it to be complete, but i think it's gonna kick some butt, i paid close attention to the mana-curve, and got some good comboes in it, such as aggravated assault/neheb plus old gnawbone, i need a few good tutors, and a few more dragons such as Kolaghan, Storms Fury, Bladewing, the Risen, Scion of the Ur-Dragon and a few more.

Ive played dragons forever, i prefer ramos the dragon engine over the ur dragon because its strictly better for comboing off. Usually dragons win by getting 3-4 dragons on the field with synergistic effects ramos does this faster with his cost reduction as well as coming down two turn cycles earleir. If were talking tiamat vs ramos id say Its a toss up, tiamat would be more consistant combo but people would see it from a mile away. THE BEST DRAGON commander undisputed is the primatic bridge, one free dragon on turn 5 is waaay more and better cost reduction than the ur or ramos while also being able to hide comboing off because you yourself wont know what youll hit. are you crazy? just get dream halls w/ any of the million tutors, tiamat for free off dream halls (discard a card i guess if that's even a cost if you have scion toolbox and graveyard recursion) and then win with bladewing rising, morritte, terror of the peaks, and dromoka off the tiamat trigger... Ramos and Ur dragon dont' do that. BTW dream halls is pretty cheap IMO for a 20 yr old RL card.

Made a miirym deck a few months ago, has scourge of valkas, terror of the peaks, old gnawbone, ganax and more. Once the treasure starts rolling in, the burn of treasure begins. Combo that with a draw outlet like garruks uprising and extra etb triggers like roaming throne or panharmonicon, then it's almost gg. Assuming nor responses or fogs/heroic intervention. Decided to make an ur dragon deck. Gonna be interesting.

Zirilan of the Claw is my Dragon commander. Powerful, totally underplayed, and he's the original mono red Dragon lord. Really sweet.

I went with Vrondiss just to do something different. If I want dragon tribal I'll go with the Ur-dragon, it is the best choice, its 5 colour, so you get all the dragons and it reduces the cost. I just wanted to build a gruul smash deck that wasn't Xenagos. Xenagos is in the 99, but thats not the same.

The thing I don't like about Tiamat is that it kind of feels like a conflux. You search up 5 great cards, for 7(8) mana, and reveal all of them. Your opponents have a few turns to brace for all of your dragons. The amount of set-up that you need after Tiamat is a lot. Plus it's conditional on casting, so your good friend Bladewing the Risen can't bring Tiamat back for her effect again. Tutoring up 5 dragons just feels slow. I do play Ur-dragon with Tiamat in the 99 though, so there's that.

Tiamat is extremely stronger than Ur-Dragon, because the victory setup you prepare before it arrives, when it arrives, opponents will normally not be able to deal with one of the two combos you picked up!

Scion of The Ur-Dragon is definitely the strongest out of the two Ur-Dragons if you build/play him right. if you get a bunch of ramp early you can turn him into Savage Ventmaw and play aggravated assault all in the same turn to get infinite combat steps with commander as early as turn 4 and you just win if no one responds or has flyers. You could also turn him into the OG Ur-Dragon, swing, draw a card, put a permanent into play for free, then play tainted strike after declare blockers to one shot someone. and if someone tries to do anything to target your commander before your ready to go off you can just activate Scion's ability in response to turn himself into a dragon with hexproof like silumgar the drifting death. Not to mention you can just wait until a player declares blockers and hit them with whatever dragon you want with what ever effect. If they declare no blockers? cool old knaw bone, ancient copper dragon, Teneb the harvester any of the Ancient dragons, OG Nico Bolas and kill one persons hand. and if you have any kind of reanimate or graveyard recycling cards then you can keep doing it as many times as you want. OH? they declared blockers??? okay... turn commander into a 10/10 with flying or a 10/10 with flying AND trample or a dragon with deathtouch, or kaiga so when commander dies you steal something. oh yea and you can get him out waaaay earlier then both Tiamat AND the OG UR-dragon and everything that the UR-dragon can do Scion can do better(except Eminence from the command zone he cant do that) but everything else is just better and faster.

question: I see a lot of talk about triggering Scion's ability multiple times. How would this work? Other than protecting your commander from spells, like you said w Silumgar, I can't figure out how this would be used as a combo, since only one dragon's abilities are available at a time. I'm building an Ur deck right now, but I'm seeing a lot of talk about how Scion is actually a better commander. but most of the dragons I have so far have powerful ETB effects, which wouldn't work well w Scion. It seems like a Scion deck needs to be built around graveyard resurrection to be really effective.

I run gruul dragons in a creature-only deck helmed by Nikya of the Old Ways. Her ability lets me get big dragons a lot more easily and then the real synergy comes in with her mana doubling letting me abuse firebreathing effects like crazy 🔥🔥

If you run Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm with Tiamat as your general, dragons can be totally lethal. I have Tiamat as my Commander, and I run Ur with Miirym and get massive numbers of Legendary creatures. I would encourage everyone who plays dragons, especially 5 color legendary dragons, also make sure Relic of Legends is in your deck (this gets even nastier with Intruder Alarm). Relic of Legends lets you tap any Legendary creature for any color of mana you want. Lathliss is DEADLY with Miirym. Beledros Witherbloom is another great one, as you can untap up to 10 lands if you pay 10 life.

Scion doesn’t get enough love, pretty sure mine wrecks Ur Dragon and Tiamat seems even worse although haven’t played against it. It’s cheaper than the most other options, and if you have the life/mana it just one shots people. It’s a toolbox of all other dragons, activate it twice give it firebreathing and double strike. Don’t have the mana, use molten steel hellkite to use your life instead with phyrexian mana, with a double activation to give it lifelink and gain most of it back. Need to untap your lands or get treasure- pay 2 mana do your thing. Need hexproof, cost 2 colorless. Honestly I wanted to build it heavy reanimator cuz it’s fun, but now it’s just a few cards in the deck cuz you just don’t need it. Atarka is a girl so queen*

That is my argument, the first thing I ask was on the scion stacking abilities. Everyone and some judges told me no, you can't stack them. So how molten/infect works? It just the only time it does? That's 1 reason I change to Tiamat.

Miirym is pretty good for dragon tribal although not five colors, but the ability to duplicate some powerful dragons to get two triggers. A card like Lathliss will populate your bored real quick. I think you know where I’m going with this

Also, one time I tried replacing Ur Dragon with Morophon and put Ur daddy in the 99 and it kinda popped off even harder. Especially there’s a lot more ways to ramp to morophon like eldrazi temple and stuff like that. It’s worth it because once morophon is out it’s one of the best ramp spells

I run a commander deck where EVERY creature is a legendary dragon. Scion of the Ur-Dragon as the commander with a Teneb the Harvester on the field and a Bladewing the Risen in the hand makes the whole table SWEAT.

I use Ur Dragon and sometimes Scion if i feel cheeky but that -1 to Dragon Spells is just too good in the long run. Its even more valuable when paired with cards like Red Medallion, Urza's Incubator, Morpohon and/or Dragonspeaker Shaman and it doesnt end there. With recent sets dragons now have access to even more powerful dragons to create treasure and dragon tokens and with Doubling Season and Kindred Discovery youre drawing cards like crazy and will have plenty of mana to cast them via treasure tokens and with cost reductions its even easier to storm the field with massive creatures and get rewarded for it. Tiamat is definitely worthy of the 99 and with cards like Sylvan Library/Worldy Tutor you can dig for Tiamat and then cast it from the top of your library with cards like Outpost Siege and Scale Singer to further your card advantage searching for more powerful dragons like the Metalic Dragons from Baldur's Gate.

You can become whichever dragon whenever you want with scion, and if you wanna attack, you simply pay 2 and become something bigger. If someone tries to blow it up, you grab a dragon with a good death trigger

With the release of the 5 new Ancient Dragons...Scion of the Ur-Dragon is now imho the best 5 color commander for dragon Tribal period. Miirym probably performs pretty damn close tho. (Doubling Season, Lathliss, Utvara combos) The -1 to Dragons honestly is not that great when you could instead be rolling a D20 for treasure tokens on turn 4.

Tiamat is extremely stronger than Ur-Dragon, because the victory setup you prepare before it arrives, when it arrives, opponents will normally not be able to deal with one of the two combos you picked up!
