Grafting Dragon Fruit

Күн бұрын

I spent some time walking around each Dragon Fruit plant to see which other buds were on the verge to abort. I help them out by removing them so that way it doesn’t spend so much energy holding onto it when they will be falling off anyways. This encourages them to ignore the aborted bud once removed and only focus its energy and growth on the buds that matter. Check out this video to see how I can tell, and why I will be taking them off!

@GraftingDragonFruit

Hi Sabina Fu, you're very welcome! I'm glad you found this video helpful. My water really depends on how hot the weather will be. I'm from California and in spring time its around 70F-80F. When its in that weather conditions I only need to water twice a week. I'd water around Saturday or Sunday one of those days when I'm free and water again around Wednesday or Thursday. Just check your soil to see if it is still moist. If it feels dry on top about 1 inch deep, then go ahead and water. I grow most of my dragon fruits in pots so I just water until I see a little bit of water running down from the bottom then I know that is more than enough. Just make sure you have good draining soil so if you do ever over water. Its all drained out so you don't have to worry about any root or stem rot. Hope this helps!

@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paulpro PP, barbed wired cactus are called Pitaya and Dragon Fruits are called Pitahaya. So you are definitely right about them being related. I don't grow any of the barbed wired cactus so my experience with them is not much. They tend to be self pollinating because I see my neighbors that have them in the front yard always have flowers and fruits would set. The pollen will work but only time will tell. Did you use fresh pollen or stored pollen?

Hi Richard, great work. Is the chicken fertilizer that your upplying fresh, or is it old matured, that has been moistened over the winter season.And can we use fresh chicken fertilizer straight from the chicken barn,on our dragon fruit trees. Thank and god bless.
@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 5 жыл бұрын
Hi James, the chicken fertilizer that I use has already been compost. So its been matured and moisten when I use it. I get it at Home Depot its about $4 for a bag. It's not safe to use fresh chicken fertilizer straight from the chicken barn. The fresh fertilizer is too strong for the Dragon Fruits and can cause them to stress if being used. Make sure to use chicken fertilizer that has already been compost and matured. It takes about 3 weeks for benefits to take effect but once it does it really shows on your plant.

Richard, I’ve been trying to grow dragon fruit in my backyard for a couple years now. I can really use your help. I seem to lose about 80% of my flowers after they bloom. I see that you prefer only 3-4 buds per branch, however I have branches that give me more buds that still turn into full flowers and bloom. But typically they abort after blooming. When I purchased these cuttings they were supposedly self pollinating so im not sure what I’m doing wrong. How often should I water the plants during fruiting season? And am I supposed to hand pollinate these even though it was sold as a self-pollinating cutting? I really hate to see my plant losing so many potential flowers. PLEASE HELP!
@GraftingDragonFruit
@GraftingDragonFruit 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony Aziz, Not to worry I am here to help! Okay, so lets talk about how impressive it is that you are getting multiple buds to stay on your branches and successfully bloom into a flower! This is what I would do, even though my Vietnam White is a self pollinator and self-fertile(meaning their own pollen works to set fruit). I STILL hand-pollinate EVERY single FLOWER that is on my dragon fruit tree. When you do this you make sure and guarantee that your flower will turn into a fruit without falling off. It's also very fun to do and makes you feel like you were a part of why these fruits even exist. So my recommendation to you is go out there when the flowers are about to bloom at night. Get a little brush and collect those pollen and hand-pollinate all the flowers. You will see that they won't fall off and abort on you anymore and your dragon fruit will be full of fruits on their way to harvest! If you put effort into hand-pollinating them your flowers that would stay on the branch will be 100%. No more flowers falling off! Hope this was helpful. :) For watering, keep watering them the same. Im from south California so in the summer time I can water them from 2-3 times a week. Keep the soil constantly moist. If the top layer is dry 1 inch deep below. Then this is a good indication that you need to water.
@anthonyaziz86
@anthonyaziz86 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve been watching your videos and started collecting pollen as you have with a bowl and a stick that I cleaned with alcohol. I then took some of that pollen and rubbed it on the stigma so I really hope that helps! Within the last few weeks I had maybe 40 or so flowers that bloomed and then died off which as you could imagine was heartbreaking. I have one white flesh tree and then most are pink and a red. I’ve seen your grafting videos and was curious what the point is behind it? Also thank you so much for your reply. I really hope this self pollination trick does the job for me because I’ve lost soo many flowers over the last couple years.

Hi Jennifer Cheung, After the branch bears fruit, that same branch will grow buds again next season. They actually will be the first branch to produce buds because that branch is matured. I will make a video and show you my branches that bears fruit, and that same exact branch will bud again the next season. I will take that branch off once its been depleted of all its nodes(spikes) or if its being covered and pushed down by other branches and being blocked of direct sunlight.

Hi Windy, have you tried using fertilizer yet to help boost your dragon fruit plant to be strong enough to produce buds and hold them onto the branch? When dragon fruits are lacking nutrients they sometimes won't be strong enough to hold onto buds and will abort themselves to help them go back into the 'growing' stage instead of blooming stage. Chicken manure is a very good fertilizer that dragon fruits love. It will help them if you haven't already started. Or if you really want to step your game up. Organic Compost Tea will show you results right away. You can find that video in my channel.

I have a further question which unfortunately is long winded. I have just procured and planted in Gujarat, India, 10 acres of Dragon fruit cuttings. There is a great demand for dragon fruit cutting at the moment in India as everyone wants to do this with the result that the person who gave me the cuttings now says that he can't supply me for the next year even though based on his assurance I had all the infrastructure in place, costing a tidy package for another 10 acres. My supplier has said that he only takes his cuttings from mature plants that are 5 years old, as these in time will give better fruiting then cuttings taken from immature plants that are less than a year old. It would save me a lot of money to wait and get my own cuttings, but don't want to do this at the cost of having plants giving less yield over a spread of many year. Wishing you every success. Hi Heather Pham, thank you for your kind words! This dragon fruit plant is 5 years old and thats the amount of time it took to get this big. It would have been bigger if I didn't do heavy pruning on it every end of the season. I mixed fox farm ocean forest soil with chicken manure. I water my plants 3 times a week in the summer months. I go out every day to check the soil if its moist on the top if it isn't ill lightly wet it to keep it consistently damp. This prevents the branches from getting skinny and wrinkling. :)

Hi chava Chiva, Here's a video of me talking about all the varieties that I have kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJCZeoWplJuti68 I chose all these varieties based on the taste. I didn't care much if it was self pollinating or easy to grow. Once I took a bite of the dragon fruit and knew what it taste like. I knew I had to HAVE that variety and would do whatever it takes to get them to grow in my own garden. Thanks for watching my videos and I'm glad it was educational for you! You can join my facebook group if you have one, we talk about pitayas/pitahayas/dragon fruits and help each other identify them. You can find a lot of info in there if you post up your question, most members are active and are glad to help out. Here's the group link facebook.com/groups/339405923306378/?ref=share

Hi Handsome, Can i ask you a question since you look like an expert. How much and how often do you water them in the hot days? When bubs and flowers are form, do you water more or less? And is there a way to avoid those bubs to becoming abort? Thanks alot. Hope to hear from you soon.

My buds flowered fully but end up with an aborted fruit. The fruit starts to form, but as it grows, it turns yellow and then aborted. Any suggestion how to correct this problem? Thanks.

What's the reason why the dragon fruits' bud abort? and how can I prevent that??

They abort sometimes because there is to many for the plant to hold on. So they start to get rid of some to focus energy on the ones that matter.
