A playthrough of Bandai's 1990 fantasy-themed shoot 'em up for the NES, Dragon Spirit: The New Legend.
Dragon Spirit was originally a 1987 arcade game by Namco that takes more than a few knocks in the conversion to the NES, but still makes for a solid, unique shooter that's worth playing.
The game's short opening stage decides the way the rest of the game will go. In this stage, you play as a man-turned-dragon rushing into battle with an evil figure named Zawel. If you defeat him, you are treated to an "ending" that serves as the game's introduction sequence. After defeating him, you are no longer quite what you were in your prime, so when the evil inevitably returns, you pick up as his son - the blue dragon rises from his budget Mount Rushmore and sets out to save the day.
If you don't successfully finish the opening stage, the game doesn't end. Instead, you play will then play as the gold dragon, but there are fewer levels, easier enemies, and a bad ending waiting in store for you. It's a pretty neat setup, and the beginning instantly makes it more memorable than the majority of the NES shooter library.
The gameplay itself is fairly standard for a top-down vertically scrolling shooter. A full upgrade system is in place, but since you aren't flying a ship, you dragon will change colors, size, and number of heads as you pick up various powerups, and all of these provide different boosts to your base abilities.
Want to blaze through a boss without even breaking a sweat? Take a green dragon with powered up fire breath with you and the boss will never touch you. Need to cover a large area with sweeping projectiles? The three-headed white dragon can cover the screen pretty effectively with it's spread-style shot.
The system allows for several different ways to attack the stages, though I will say that the higher powered dragons tend to make the bosses way too easy. The stages themselves are far more challenging than their guardians seem to be.
There are a number of short story cutscenes between each stage (in a shooter? neat!), and each stage has its own theme, and usually a gimmick. Some levels will have volcanoes spraying lava at you, while others have the walls closing in on you as you try to fly through narrow passages.
Given the effort put into the gameplay and the story, Dragon Spirit is a bit odd in that it falls directly on its face when it comes to the quality of the graphics. It tosses a fair number of objects around the screen at a time, but flicker runs rampant, the enemies lack any real detail (just compare them to the TG16 and arcade versions!) and some of those backgrounds are downright hideous and painful on the eyes thanks to the clashing bright colors, but it does move pretty smoothly, and some of the bosses are cool to see. The music fares a lot better - most of the tracks are standard background fare that you'll tune out instantly, but a few of them are memorable and sound good on the NES hardware.
Overall, Dragon Spirit: The New Legend is a fun shooter, and one that offers enough creativity to avoid feeling like a clone of previous games. It's not very difficult and you might need to wear sunglasses to play it, but the game has a lot of character that helps to make up for its shortcomings. A lot of Bandai's games seem to follow this pattern (Frankenstein, anybody?)!
As long as you don't turn it on expecting to find a AAA title like Gun-Nac or Crisis Force, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

My childhood ❤️. I played this game so much when I was little. The music hooked me so much, especially the ice stage and boss theme. I think I beat it like 20 times before I realized you could play as the blue dragon if you beat zawel. 😂 I still till this day don’t know the requirements for getting the girls to appear at the end. Kudos for playing this. The nostalgia feels man.

I've always liked this game since I was a kid. Great music, fun gameplay, and for me anyway just the right amount of challenge. Reminds me a lot of Xevious with ground and air weapons you can use. I didn't know this was a port -- well, a 'remake' might be better -- of an arcade game till years later. I never minded the graphics, though.

I can agree with that. Dragon Spirit: The New Legend is my 3rd favorite shooter on the NES (simply due to its gameplay and music being awesome), right behind Gun-Nac and Summer Carnival '92 Recca. It was my 4th favorite shooter on the NES (for a while), but I changed my mind and put it up to my 3rd favorite shooter on the NES, simply because of the execution (and atmosphere) of Dragon Spirit: The New Legend being superb. Here are my top 10 favorite shooters on the NES/Famicom (note that I'm only counting PURE shooters/shumps (as in just shooters/shumps; in other words, JUST vertical and/or horizontal scrolling shooters): 1. Summer Carnival '92 Recca (Famicom) - It's because the graphics are superb (beyond even that of any other shooter I have seen on the NES) and it's gameplay and music rock too. Plus, you can charge up a Spirit-Bomb style attack in Summer Carnival '92 Recca and use it offensively and defensively. It also has other modes, too. The weapons in Summer Carnvial '92 Recca are fun to use. It is very difficult, though. 2. Gun-Nac (NES) - Again, the graphics and music are superb. The gameplay and atmosphere are also superb, too. You can take a single hit (meaning you have 2 hits) in Gun-Nac, too. Again, the weapons are fun to use AND you have four different elemental bomb enemy-clearing attacks (that get stronger if you collect the same bomb consecutively). It's also a sequel to Zanac on the NES. 3. Dragon Spirit: The New Legend (NES) - This is my 3rd favorite shooter for multiple reasons. True, it's graphics may not be impressive (compared to Gun-Nac's and Summer Carnival '92 Recca's), but it is still fairly adequate in that department (compared to some other shooters on the NES and Famicom) AND at least I can tell what enemies are supposed to look like as opposed to just blobs on the screen. However, it's gameplay, atmosphere and music ROCK. There are MANY power-ups you can get (including the darn anti-power up too and a useless power-up), some of which can be combined. Plus, you're a freaking dragon! What's not to like about that? Also, you can bomb ground enemies (just like in Xevious for the NES). 4. 1943 (NES) - This WAS my 3rd favorite shooter for a while (until Dragon Spirit: The New Legend overtook it). The music, gameplay and atmosphere also ROCK in 1943 for the NES. The graphics in 1943 for the NES are very good too. You can call a lightning attack to destroy smaller enemies and stun bigger enemies (and bosses) in 1943 for the NES. You also have an energy limit (which doubles as both health and fuel), so you can take some hits too in 1943 (NES). You can also put points into parameters (meaning you can upgrade your plane) for your plane to do more damage (among other things). 5. Legendary Wings (NES) - This was tough to put Legendary Wings (NES) as my 5th favorite shooter on the NES (because I was considering putting Abadox or Life Force as my 5th favorite shooter). However, after thinking about it, I decided to put Legendary Wings as my 5th favorite shooter (for multiple reasons). The graphics are great in Legendary Wings (NES). The gameplay and atmosphere are excellent in Legendary Wings (NES). It's music is excellent, too. However, the 2 main reasons why I decided to put Legendary Wings as my 5th favorite shooter on the NES is because of it's 2-player coop mode and the weapons acting as a life counter for Legendary Wings on the NES. If that's confusing, let me explain: if your weapon is level 1 (in Legendary Wings for the NES), then you can obviously take only one hit. However, if your weapon is level 2, then you can take two hits (and so on, until you get to weapon level 5, at which, you can take up to seven hits). Plus, at the maximum weapon level, you become a Phoenix! How cool is that? It's also a vertical AND a horizontal shooter, too. (continuing my top 10 favorite shooters list below)
@nintendoman4654
@nintendoman4654 3 жыл бұрын
My Top 10 favorite shooters on the NES, Part 2: 6. Life Force (NES) - This shooter is also a horizontal-vertical scrolling shooter. It also has a 2-player coop mode. It's graphics are great (with crisp, detailed graphics). It's gameplay, music and atmosphere are superb (I know I have said with the last 5 NES shooters, but there you go). It's bosses are pretty cool and it's weapons are fun to use. 7. Twin Bee (NES) - Twin Bee (NES) is number 7 (out of top 10 favorite NES shooters), simply because of it's gameplay, charm, atmosphere and music. Plus, like Life Force (NES) and Legendary Wings (NES), it's also a 2-player coop shooter (with both players having stronger shots if you manage to "link-up" with them both). It's power-ups are also fun and awesome to use (especially the Force Field power-up, which takes a lot of hits to dissipate). 8. Abadox (NES) - This shooter also scrolls both horizontally and vertically (like Life Force (NES) and Legendary Wings (NES)). I would have to say that Abadox's atmosphere is certainly the most intimidating out of all the shooters I have seen on the NES; I mean, you go inside a living thing, for pete's sake (with teeth, gore, blood and guts)! It's gameplay, music and graphics are great, too. The power-ups are also fun to use and the bosses are cool (and also disgusting in a scary and cool way). It is quite difficult, though. 9. Super Spy Hunter (NES) - This shooter is pretty cool, because you drive a car that shoots down every enemy car in sight. It's atmosphere is cool and it's music, graphics and gameplay are awesome. It's weapons are pretty fun to use (although I usually get the "L" power-up (that stands for life extender) first before any other power-up). Super Spy Hunter is cool too. 10. Terra Cresta (Famicom) - This shooter is pretty cool too. It's atmosphere is cool and it's music, graphics and gameplay are very good. In Terra Cresta (Famicom), you can build parts (which allow to take up to 3 hits) and you can SPLIT yourself apart and the detached parts can shoot as well! I will say that it's pretty fun too. These are my top 10 shooters on the NES.

For a 1987 game, this doesn't look that bad. Gaming saw a Renaissance in 1988, with NES games looking and playing better, arcade games looking more visually stunning, plus it was the first year of the 16 bit console in Japan, the Mega Drive.

I thought that maybe i was just seeing something that wasn't actually there, but I always envisioned the mountain just screaming "AAAAAAHHHH!" whenever I saw it 😆 Fast forward to today, this video popped up as recommend and I recalled that memory. When I saw an arcade playthrough also pop up on my feed, I decided to check it out and...I wasn't wrong. It IS a face, except it's supposed to be a dragon face. In the arcade it's definitely a dragon...on NES it's the "AAAAHHHH!" guy. 😆😆

I like this game a lot (because of my love with dragonology and stuff like that). The character's hitbox (in this remixed port, that is) is smaller than the Arcade and TG-16's dragon's hitbox (of Dragon Spirit). If a bullet collided with your dragon's wings in the Arcade and TG-16 versions of Dragon Spirit, it registered as a hit - not so in the NES one, though. There are a LOT of power-ups in Dragon Spirit: The New Legend. Part 1: Boss Strategies: Interlude Boss: Zawel - obviously, he's easy as hell. Try to get at or above 2-headed blue dragon and close to max firepower (which is easy, considering there are a LOT power-ups before you get to him). Area 1 Boss: Plesiosaur - What a joke of a boss; he can attack with fire breath (and fireballs), but if you have green dragon (or hell, even 2-headed blue dragon and max firepower), that boss dies within 5 seconds! That boss will not even get a chance to attack (if that happens)! Area 2 Boss: Giant Phoenix - This boss has slightly higher health (possibly because of it's smaller fireballs surrounding it like a shield), but this boss has TWO rings of fireballs (with 4 each). Avoid the first ring of fireballs and try to hit the Giant Phoenix as much as you can. Again, Green Dragon (or 3-headed Blue Dragon) with MAX firepower will completely decimate this boss in no less than 10 seconds (at most). Area 3 Boss: Giant Mutant Tree-Mouth - This boss is the first boss that you have to bomb (with your ground fire attack). There are two rounds of bombing it's roots (which appear 4 at a time) before it opens up it's "mouth". During that point, it will spew out spikes and continue to spew out spikes (until it is destroyed). After you get done bombing all 8 roots (which appear 4 at a time, like I said), then it will open it's mouth. It does not take much more to destroy it after that. Area 4 Boss: Ghost Skeleton Dragon - At the very beginning of this boss, the Ghost Skeleton Dragon will form up. Do not be in it's way (during the forming of this boss) or you will get hit. After it forms into it's whole self, it will spit out 3 snakes (where the skeleton part will split apart into 8 pieces after that) and then 8 ghosts come out of it's skeleton body and it's vulnerable orb will be there. You can shoot the vulnerable orb (even after it is whole). However, the 8 ghosts will follow you, so take them out and continue to shoot at the vulnerable orb (until it decides to reform into it's skeleton body). Then it will continue to spit out 3 snakes before it decides to split apart and it decides to repeat the process of having 8 ghosts come out of it's non-existent skeleton body and reforming into it's skeleton body. Again, Green Dragon (or 3-headed Blue Dragon with MAX firepower) destroys this boss within 5 to 10 seconds. Area 5 Boss: Giant Spider - This boss is pretty easy. This is another one of these bosses that require you to use your ground fire (most of the time). It summons spiders (the ones that you see in Area 5 that shoot bullets at you) and can jump in the air to shoot web at you (that damages you). If it is in the air (that is, IF it survives long enough to do so), then you can attack it with your regular fire. The maximum number of spiders that can be on the screen at any given time is 5 (during the Giant Spider boss). Again, ground attacking it constantly will destroy it quickly.
@videogameman7617
@videogameman7617 2 жыл бұрын
Part 2: Boss Strategies Area 6 Glacier Land Boss: Chinese New Year Exploding Dragon - Again, this is another easy boss. Apparently, the Chinese New Year Exploding Dragon ate a TON of C4, because sections of it explode (with fireballs) when you shoot it at it. It also goes in a figure-8 pattern (while attacking with fire periodically). Area 7 Deep Sea Boss: Manta Ray - The Manta Ray has it's smaller versions of itself surround itself and the Manta Ray itself attacks with fireballs periodically. It also replenishes it's flunkies periodically (although they are easily destroyed). This is another easy boss. Area 8 Dark Quarters Boss: Gate - The gate is another easy boss. It attacks with it's tongue and periodically shoots lasers out of it's eyes. It is also vulnerable when it shoots it's lasers out of it's eyes. Area 9 Dark Castle Penultimate Boss: Three-Headed Dragon - this boss goes down like a sack of potatoes. All three heads breathe fire periodically. Avoid the fire (like you have been avoiding all of the other bosses attacks) and it will go down easy. Area 9 Dark Castle Final Boss Part 1: Galda (First Form) - Galda's projectiles are easy to around. He fires 3 5-shot spreadshots (2 on the side and 1 below him) which the individual spread out a little bit. It does not much to take him down. Area 9 Dark Castle Final Boss Part 2: Galda (Second Form) - Oh, you think Galda's defeated, right? WRONG! Galda turns into his second form (some sort of cyborg). He periodically shoots out flames from his hands and 3 electric balls that bounce around all over the place. The electric balls do go off the screen after some time, but he periodically replaces them. This is the most difficult boss in the game (he's not difficult, but it takes some time and your shots can and do get blocked by the electric balls). Avoid the 3 electric balls and try not to get trapped in either corner (on the left and right sides of the bottom of the screen) - although you can escape if you are trapped in the bottom corners (between the 3 electric balls and his flames that he shoots out of his hands). If you do come here with the Small Dragon power-up, it will probably take longer.

I remember owning and playing this game. this game is much like Altered Beast in a way, you get powerups and not until you are fully powered up do you face the boss of the level. The difference is the side scroller vs. top down view. And here the boss of the level seems to turn up regardless of the power status of your character

Its not the same as all (which you funny enough pointed out yourself in your comment). Dragon spirit is less like altered beast and much, much more like a traditional shoot em up.

So I've been replaying on the switch via the original arcade rerelease. Even the "new" version within it, with it's easy mode turned on, max lives, max staring health, it's still significantly harder than this version on the blue dragon mode, let alone the gold dragon. So if any of y'all are playing DS on switch, without somehow loading this NES versions rom, just know you aren't the only one struggling despite beating it as a child. Hope this helps some poor soul trying to relive their childhoods lol

I remember this game like a hawk seems like the music pitch has shift upward as it has aged; I don't know why that happens with audio from the old days. (Very strange effect). Also happens in movie audio. The only way to prove that point is to find the original music notes as written down in 1990.

amazing game for the nes never played it on the nes though. played it on the turbografx 16 much harder probably than nes. but the arcade is solid on ps1 namco game. plus also got it on mini arcade for £50 with rolling thunder and other namco titles.

I do not remember this bosses being this easy to beat as a child. I don't know if there was a selectable difficulty but it seems like you have it on easy mode. The boss music was sick and you just murder these guys before we even get to hear it. I guess it could have been that I was only 4 or 5 when I was playing this game, but I definitely remember it being harder than this.

In the opening stage, if you die you are reborn and play as the GOLD dragon for the entirety of the game. I guess it was to give players an advantage that couldn't play the already low difficulty game. But I knew of it as a 'secret' when I saw someone do it on purpose. Kind of neat though.

No, you get that ending if you play as the gold dragon, regardless of the number of times you play. It's a picture of the princess as a young girl with the dragon as a pet and the caption says he's (Lace, the character you play as) is more scared of her than any monsters. It implies that as a kid, Lace was kind of her bitch lol

I still don't know if it's a cheat, but there's thing I always do when I was a kid...at the start of Area1 I go like at the rightmost part then keep pushing at the bottommost part...the likelihood of the green dragon power up dropping from the first powerup drop monsters is like 99%
