I know you guys aren't manga lean, but I do love manga content from you because of how serious you take the provenance, which is often overlooked by manga fans. Comic fans don't seem to this do!~

Guys, it's just genius! Only Toriyama, and a few other also genius Mangaka, can really do this. Toriyama is one of the greatest artists ever. When you start analyzing his flow, and actual panel structure it's insane how he is able to perfect the art form given the time constraints. There are a couple people who are like this, like Tetsuo Hara, Araki, or Takeo Saito whose sheer corpus of consistent content is astounding.

Toriyama used Luma inks for coloring during Dragon Ball's serialization. For about half of Dr Slump he'd buy marker multipacks, snap them open and dilute the ink. Also of note, The Dragon Ball Super Gallery is an event commemorating DB's upcoming 40th anniversary, where mangaka redraw each tankoban cover. A new one is posted each month.

You nailed the characters personalities based on the front cover expressions. Congrats! I really prefer the simple covers. The ones that you might think he spent less time on.

4:52 right you are Jim. Originally, all 42 volumes are referred to as Dragonball in Japan. It's the anime where they split the first 16 volumes as Dragonball and the later 26 as Dragonball Z. Viz decided that since the Dragonball Z was such a hit, that they would renumber and relabel the manga to reflect that split in the story and probably also so that new readers that just want the DBZ stories know where to jump in at.

Thank you guys so much for this. Such a fan of the channel and a huge fan of Toriyama / Dragonball. It's refreshing to hear the series and his work discussed in this way. Continually in awe of his craft. For as big as DB is, it feels like Toriyama's influence isn't fully appreciated or understood. Love getting such deep insight into his work. You guys would love the 'Dragon Ball: A Visual History' book. Thanks for this and all your videos!

I did a fan drawing of Master Roshi for inktober; one of the eye catches from the Dragon Ball days. and the simplicity of design threw me so hard when actually trying to draw it. an illustration that I could literally see would take toriyama about a few to maybe a dozen or so minutes to draw took me well over 2hrs to get the pencils done before even getting the ink done. "he knows the volume of the forms and the drapery works... just a master artist". man that's acurate

The difference between dragon ball and Dragon ball Z is the age of Goku. Apparently Toriyama said it was difficult to draw kid goku in battles with other characters due to his arm length. That played a factor in aging him up and the fact that the reader base was entering their teenage years. There's a distinct angular look to dragon ball z compared to dragon ball also.

With the older Goku and angular slightly more realistic art comes darker stories in Z as well. Idk if there’s anything in Dragonball that’s as intense, creepy or emotional as the Frieza or Cell saga.

I like that most of the covers break the panel borders to give depth or momentum to the image. I'm thinking covers 12, 13 specifically, but many of them have a dimensionality.

Early in the video you guys mention he’s using Copics, but he’s actually using colored inks from a brand called Luma which is no longer sold. There’s a translated interview on KZbin where he mentions trying to use Copic markers, but he says he just couldn’t get the hang of them, or something to that effect.

Regarding his colors, a lot of his stuff is actually colored inks. You can really tell with the ones where Gokus clothes are super orange and bright.

In Japan, the series is just Dragonball. The show got the "Z", since new shows get a bigger budget. It's cleaver how he through the number on each on of the cover images.

Z is the result of Kazuhiko Torishima wanting to overhall the anime as he felt that the existing one wasn't getting the series's tone (most of the staff carried over from Dr.Slump) and called upon a new crew to start from the Saiyan Saga.

@ed, I also thought he used Copic markers, but turns out he mostly used color inks? Video of his process: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmSUpWp3pN5slZIsi=epAnmEdvR27c1T9F

(you probably achieve similar results with Copics. I read somewhere he switched to inks because with markers he would run out of ink faster.)

I remember when Jim Lee got a Goku request and was having fun twisting his name and I was so cringed like "Dude. You spent whole life in comics and you don't know DB. Goku makes all american characters (Superman,Batman, etc.) seem so extremely flat. Gosh..." Like I know that living in States makes you know American stuff better than some of Japanese stuff. It's natural. But seeing comic geeks naming every Marvel/DC character, but calling Cell just an alien... Well. No hate. Just a weird impression. For me as someone who got to know both superhero stuff and Dragon Ball at equal level at the same time it's kinda awkward to see that someone may know most of the Marvel characters while not recognizing Dragon Ball Characters. Dragon Ball is so epic and emotional journey. It was for me as a kid. There was Spider-Man Animated series (which is awesome too) but DBZ was just another level. Very mature but very fairy tail at the same time. But anyways. Thanks for this video guys! Love yours work!
