There is actually a small paragraph in the companion booklet this mentions that exactly, that for kids 8 and younger don't play with the placement rule :) I played it yesterday and I don't think I'll even play with that placement rule. I think it was supposed to make the game more strategic but I don't see a need for it. Great game though!

We played this because it’s getting lots of praise. Fell flat completely. It went on for far too long for what it is and you keep repeating the same small decisions again and again and again. Would never revisit this one…sadly

I agree. The game was fine, but it just didn't feel like there was progress as the game went on. And the dragons are adorable but there's no reason for this to be dragons.
