clean out the fan and paint the generator flange tin

Looking at some charts such as the Bentley book it refers to a large pulley and a small pulley. i.e. regarding torque. I take it to mean that the Large pulley is the crank pulley @33 lbft and Small pulley is generator(alternator) pulley @ 43 lbft Is that correct? That seems like a quite high torque for the size of the nut on the generator. ???? Also do you put any Loctite, such as the blue, on the bolt for the crank pulley?

+DG Carlson i'm seeing 33 ft/lb for the crank pulley... can't put the pulley bolt in dry, it'll need something... i've never used a torque wrench on the alternator pulley... www.hotvws.com/content.php?contentID=62

Do you bother to check the height of the fuel pump rod 'stroke' after installing two shims onto the engine studs below the intermediate flange as outlined in the Bentley book? i.e. to check that the stroke is between 4 and 5mm? Do kits come with several gaskets to allow the flange to be raised to reduce the stroke if required?
@DragRacingTV8 жыл бұрын
+DG Carlson we showed all the gaskets in the kit at the time, and i don't think that there were extras for shimming up the fuel pump? i haven't seen a problem with it, but if there is a bentley spec, it's worth checking out.

You say in your notes to use a lube on the gland nut but in the video you appear to be removing any lube from it. Are you saying use lube when doing the end play shimming and then at final assembly clean/and dry the gland nut and internal crank threads and then use a loctite product? Do you use blue/removable loctite or 'permanent' red loctite?
@DragRacingTV8 жыл бұрын
+DG Carlson yes, that's it exactly... i use the red loctite.
Just by using that extension to tighten the Gland Nut...you knew you gave it at least 250ft lbs of torque? How? Can you clarify please.
@DragRacingTV7 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Huber The most accurate ways to do it would probably be to put a calculated extension length between the nut and the torque wrench, or perhaps get a Torquemeister Tool. Simply adding a calculated extension length at the end of the breaker bar, as was done here, means that you'll have to know how much weight to put on the end of the extension. We know that torque = force x length, so you can calculate it: www.workshopaddict.com/tools/torque.html It looks like you can put a 40" breaker bar on the nut, and get 250ft/lbs on it, with someone who weighs 125lbs standing on the end of the bar? Torque wrench theory here: www.aa1car.com/library/torque_wrench.htm Just a note about the article, discussing torque settings for dry fasteners; I had a flywheel nut start to gall up on me, installing it dry, I wouldn't recommend doing that: www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=586185 Another problem is that different types of lubricants can change the actual torque that the fastener sees, so keep that in mind.

Do you use any sealant on the gaskets of the fuel pump?
@DragRacingTV8 жыл бұрын
+DG Carlson i don't recall using sealant there, but possibly on the bottom gasket? sounds like you are finishing this long block build, congrats.

didn't see you set the endplay when installing flywheel.
@DragRacingTV7 жыл бұрын
+Linda Carey We covered setting the end play here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpWwfXlqm9JjlaMm16s because you want to measure it as part of the short block assembly, not after the jugs and heads are installed. Thanks for bringing it up, I should have had a link to it in here already.
