Hi, it's me again....I double checked and my oil cooler ,is 8mm and my galleries too. It's a single relief case.1600 dual port Brazilian made engine.I tried with different torques and its always the same oil spill under the engine. I'm starting to think that ,maybe my relief valve is stuck and I'm having too much pressure on my case and its blowing out my seals. But ,hmmm honestly I doubt this is the case,...I mean ,no revving the engine up ,just idling ,leaks. It's really annoying! Thanks for your comments.

I have a ‘69 type 3 Squareback sideways mounted oil cooler. I recently pulled the motor to replace the rear main seal. I noticed oil spilled all over the oil cooler. Oil cooler is still in good condition and I’m gonna use the existing cooler, changing the seals of course. My question is; is it ok to clean off all the oil on the oil cooler? I was just gonna wash it off with soapy water and thoroughly dry off before reinstalling. Your advice is greatly appreciated 🇩🇪👍🏼

+rene - Cleaning the oil cooler off on the outside sounds like a good idea to me, maybe put rubber plugs in the galley holes on the cooler first? or cram pieces of clean rag in there?? keep the internal areas of the cooler clean. It might also help to face the galley holes down while cleaning, don't submerge the galley holes in water.

Excellent video. Would you know how to fit some oil lines into the holes - I was wondering how I could fit one on my motorbike as prefer it to the standard looking oil coolers. Thanks!
@DragRacingTV7 жыл бұрын
i've never tried doing that, but since there aren't any threaded fittings on the oil cooler ports, about the only thing i can think of would be to try and fasten an oil cooler bypass to the bottom of the oil cooler... the bypass piece is designed to bolt on to the engine case, it replaces the factory oil cooler, so you'd be using it for something that it wasn't designed to do: www.mamotorworks.com/VW/product/oil-cooler-bypass-with-gasket313646

when i took apart my 1966 1300 engine it had the red style seal however the new ones are simply so larger, did the 1966 beetles use the white seals (don't have a spare head bolt to test but good tip)
@DragRacingTV9 жыл бұрын
+Mr3wheeledbike i'm not sure what was factory original in '66, i'm guessing that it must have been a small oil galley case? i always ran dual-port engines, so i'm no single-port expert... you could try looking for numbers stamped on the case, but the bottom line is going to be that you'll have to know the oil galley size in order to be sure that you are running the right seals... it had red seals, could the engine have been swapped out at some point? or maybe someone just used the wrong seals.

I pulled my 40hp and pulled the cooler for inspection. I was shocked to find white tapered flying saucer shaped seals on a 40. So based on your excellent video, I have to replace with same? I bought standard black tubing type. So, I have a later cooler?
@DragRacingTV4 жыл бұрын
I've never worked on the 40hp stuff, but I'd guess that as always it would depend on which cooler you have, so do the galley hole test procedure. People mix 'n match all years of parts on these motors.

I know this is an old video, but I have a 1300CC case which is 8mm and my new oil cooler has 10MM holes. I also have a VW engine gasket kit, which comes with different cooler gaskets. two of the gaskets is about 9.5MM ID on one side and 7.5MM ID on the other side. However they are not green and are regular brown color. Can those be used or they are for some other type of configurations?
@DragRacingTV2 жыл бұрын
I think that we are on the same page in that your first sentence appears to describe the adapter seals situation, which as Mike stated is: "They can go from an early case to a late cooler" and "The [green] adapter seals will fit in either case[8mm holes or 10mm holes]". However the VW engine gasket kits that we used to get decades ago here in the U.S. never came with those adapter seals, but it sounds like you are seeing them in your gasket kit, albeit in a different color. I'd have to ask Mike if the adapter seals are now included with the U.S. gasket kits. At any rate, I don't know which oil cooler you have, dual port or single port with 10mm holes, but if it's a single port cooler without bosses, will you need the washers as spacers with those brown adapter seals, in order to prevent seal crushing? Fwiw you could ask your local VW shop if they sell the green adapter seals, see if there is any difference between that and the brown seals that were included in your kit.
@borna4302 жыл бұрын
@@DragRacingTV Thanks so much for the info. The engine is 1300 single port converted to 1600 single port. . The original German Oil cooler on the engine has 8mm holes. The new Oil cooler I purchased has 10 MM holes on it (Part # 111117021E) . The Engine gasket kit has many oil cooler gaskets in it, and 2 of them are tapered, one side of it is about 7.5MM and the other side is about 9.5MM. So I am thinking those 2 seals can be used?Unfortunately there is no local VW shop near me to check that.
@DragRacingTV2 жыл бұрын
@@borna430 It looks like that oil cooler has the bosses on it that keep the seal from getting crushed too much? It sounds like the seals you are talking about are the same adapter seals as these, that are listed for use with 1200-1600cc engines, so it sounds right for your situation: www2.cip1.com/vwc-111-198-029/ Given that there aren't any other seals with mismatched oil galley sizes, it appears to be your only choice. You might want to consider flushing that oil cooler out somehow before installation.

Ok, I have the older seal type, the white ones ,that I could only get black ones that look like a hose cut . Always leak and I can't get it to seal properly.How much do you torque it? Can you make a video ,installing this seals? Is it possible to use some kind of silicone? Is it possible to use this 8 mm gallery seals and have no leaks? Thanks.
@DragRacingTV9 жыл бұрын
i'm not familiar with the black seals, but it sounds like you are saying that they are similar to the white seals? the video says that type of seal is only used on the small oil galley case and cooler? so you need to: 1)identify the size of the oil galley holes in the oil cooler, 2)identify the size of the oil galley passageways in the case, 3)make sure that they match each other, using the 10mm head stud trick to do all that. is it a single port motor or a dual port motor? single oil pressure relief case, or dual oil pressure relief case? the problem with using silicone there is that we don't want pieces of it floating around in the oiling system.
@qwertrewq98798787129 жыл бұрын
Hi, its a simple relief case , dual port 1600 . It has 8 mm galleries and 8 mm seals . the black seals I believe is the cheap version of the seal that you show on the video . but the big question is how to lock the nuts and prevent the seals from crushing. Always after leaking when I check I found the seals are deformed , so I guess I applied too much pressure to the nuts ,but if I let them a bit loose it leaks too ! So it's really something I can't feel comfortable dong because there's no procedure well defined. Do you know how much psi has to whistand the seal to prevent a leak ? Maybe I'm having some kind of back pressure in the block? Dunno. Thanks for your comments .
@DragRacingTV9 жыл бұрын
qwertrewq9879878712 is the oil cooler itself a small oil galley cooler? since there are three single port coolers, it's real easy to get 'em mixed up. that's a good question about how tight with the white seals, because they look pretty tall, when mike put one on the cooler. when you say deformed, if the seal is deformed to the point where it's blocking the flow of oil through it, something is wrong... i've seen that before; the ports going in and out of the cooler are nearly closed off because of seal deformation. if the seal opening is good, when you pull the cooler, and the deformation is just normal crush, i wonder if it's leaking because the seal got hard, and lost it's ability to hold tension... if the motor/oil gets too hot, it could contribute to seal deterioration. does the oil start leaking right after you put the seals in, and first fire it up? that would sound like an install issue... if it takes awhile to start leaking, is seal breakdown an issue? can you get different seals from a vw dealership or something? because there shouldn't be an issue with the tension of the nuts, if the right parts are used... in the video, mike puts washers under one type of cooler/seal combo, in order to control the amount of crush on the seals... that is not a factory procedure, but it works in that specific case... the small oil galley case shouldn't need that. you could check for pressure issues by pulling the pressure relief spring... the plunger should come out of the bore easily, if you need to put a screwdriver into the bottom of the plunger to get it out, i wonder if something is hanging it up... be sure and don't score the pressure relief bore in the case, with the screwdriver.
@DragRacingTV9 жыл бұрын
DragRacingTV wait, i just noticed that you said that it's a 1600 dual port? single port small oil galley cases can be converted to use dual port heads and dual port cooling tin, dual port fan, etc., but you would have to run a dual port oil cooler, which is a big galley cooler, along with the green adapter seals shown in the video. if you are using the white hose type seal with a dual port cooler, the seal would be too small, it would be all wrong... you need the green adapter seal for that... can you clarify which oil cooler is used? dual port cooler would be the silver looking aluminum one, not one of the black coolers.

8:11 okay.. Im building a engine for my rat rod project and just got to my long block completed and started looking at the oil cooler (bc the one i had in a box of parts doesnt appear to be the right one.) I have a "H" block (stamped in, and yes only a "H" no other letters) and where you show your "top side" stud setting i have the same stud but its about 2 1/2 inches tall... and only threaded in the top portion....? any ideas I have a dog house cooler bu it does not seem to install the same way unless im mistaken...? any help would be great. thanks. also up where the oil cooler would sit i have the numbers 080 stamped into the block.
@DragRacingTV5 жыл бұрын
That long stud doesn't make sense to me either, but you'll probably want to replace it with the right stud for the factory oil cooler, that sits inside the fan shroud. Figure out the oil galley size in the case, per the video, so that you can use the correct size oil cooler seals. Flush out the oil cooler, if it's been sitting with open ports. I don't know what the 080 stamping is, but if the case went to the machine shop, they should have known what it was.

@@DragRacingTV Well after much research (about 6 hours yesterday evening) ive found that my 1600 dp type 1 case is actual a H-block 1500 sp case from a type 3 vw. (they use the long stud in place of the short because their oil cooler lays sideways not vertical on the block) so it's getting busted off and a new stud drilled and tapped into the block. so yea... :) the joys of working with parts from 1000 vehicles in one! lol as for the 080 the only thing i can assume is that was the line bore difference... I had to buy special bearings to get the block and crank spacing correct. (I was told the block was bored for pistons but not line bored... im assuming now that was a lie. (so it'd have been line bored 080 and bored out for 94mm pistons.)

So the big seals can be used for a 73 super beetle?
@DragRacingTV6 жыл бұрын
+Strange foot - It depends on the engine; '73 Super Beetle did come with a dual-port engine here in the states, that had the bigger oil galley in the case, but since a single-port case can be used with dual-port heads and tin, you really need to tear the engine down and check the galley size, per the video.

i bought this oil cooler for my 66 bug along with the stepped green seals . www.machine7.com/product.php?xProd=248 . would this fit my inshroud ?
@DragRacingTV9 жыл бұрын
+Abdullah Khan thx for checking out the video... if you read the ad text: This is the standard replacement Oil Cooler for the twin port motors and fits in the extended “Dog House” at the rear of the fanshroud... so it is for the later model ~1971 and up Type 1 engines... however, many people put the later model engines in their vw bugs, so you really need to figure out exactly what engine and fan shroud you have, do not go by just the year of the car. Jbugs has drawings covering some of the sheet metal differences: www.jbugs.com/VW_Tech_Article_Engines-alt.html That oil cooler will not fit in a single-port fan shroud. However, if you have the single port engine and fan shroud in your 1966 bug, that came with the car originally, you can in theory convert the single port fan shroud and oil cooler to a dual port fan shroud and oil cooler, because the overall width and thickness of both fan shrouds is the same... you will keep the single port tin that covers the cylinders and heads, but replace just about everything above it, including the fan, because it is different as well: -1300/1500/1600 single port fans are 1.25 inches wide, with 28 blades. -the doghouse fan is 1.5 inches wide, with 28 blades. Be sure and use that long dual-port rear tin piece, that is behind the fan shroud, and the air duct coming off of the dual-port fan shroud, because that system exhausts the hot air out of the engine compartment. I have never actually done this, so ymmv, but other people have done it, and if you get it working, you will have better engine cooling and better heat output in the passenger compartment, because of the increased air flow from the wider fan.
