I was so worried about a potential flood while swapping out the valve, that I spent more time prepping the area with towels and a shop vac than it actually took to do the swap. The airlock method worked like a charm, with no more than 2 or 3 ounces of spillage! Thank you for posting this tutorial.

Thank You for this video. My water heater had a plastic drain valve that was leaking. Replaced with a brass one with a slightly longer Drain Valve. I was nervous I would brake or snap the plastic one but it came off in one piece thankfully

@@PROSDIY Clean as a whistle. I kept checking it for a day or so. Here in AZ we have these hot water circulation devices and I initially neglected to turn that thing off.

This is a much better option! I see many will release pressure and create a vacuum with the pressure relief valve…but I know everytime you use those, there is a chance it will be shot.

@@PROSDIY my water heater is rheem power vent with model MODEL: 42VP75FW. how do i know the shank size? Also if i just buy 3'' shank, will it work for the model with 2'' original one?

@@ask43242flight You can use a thin wire or something that will fit along side the current drain valve. Then measure the distance of how long the wire went to the tank and the end of the shank, then add 1/2" for the threads. You can always use a longer one (3") and it will work fine. It just will stick out a little further.

I need to replace a T&P valve on a water heater that is in series with another. The T&P valve is on the first one in the series, with the cold water supply line coming in. I'm assuming that I need to drain both tanks 10 - 20 gallons to clear the T&P valves on both otherwise they will keep filling each other up when the water supply line in is shut off?

That's correct, they will equalize into each other. In your case you'll have to drain slightly more water than if you only had one water heater. Good luck on your repair!

Tried this and it only gets worse. Watch the video and replace the valve. $12 at Home Depot. Plumber replacement $200-500.

Our plastic valve gave out and I woke up to 40 gallons of water shooting out of our water tank… the tank is less then a year old and it’s under warranty but they can’t come out for 3-5 days and water is still coming out after I shut the MAIN supply off…. The water is coming out very slow but it sounds like it’s bubbling and EVERYTHING is shut off..
