My grandmother, Maria(Margaret) McGarry was born on Drakes Island. Her father John was a Gunner in the RA. My grandmother came to the USA in1891.

This should be protected by English Heritage as a place of historic importance.

Spent many happy times there as a seascout on the sixties, met the Duke of Edinburgh there. Give it back to the people of Plymouth

Nobody in their right mind would want to stay in a hotel if one was built on the island because they'd soon get fed up having to take a boat to and from Plymouth in rough seas..:)

It never happened. He sold the island for 1/3rd of his asking price, and now it's a heritage site. The tours are really good, and preservation are the main goal

Been here before. We had our own guide as no one knew we was going over but it was fantastic. I was walking along the thick huge grass and just randomly seen a ww1 radio station

I love drakes island and been on there 3 times . It says private property no trespassing but last year plymouth live actually said go and explore it before someone buys it !
@lovelybitofbugle2194 жыл бұрын
@@skyelliott1859 Wow! I'd love to go. If I ever win the Euromillions I'm buying it...but I'd keep the name. Sir Francis Drake was a legend.

It used to be a great adventure centre. Spent two weeks there on a school trip in the late seventies. Sailing, canoeing, climbing, etc. A special island. The tunnels are just amazing. I hope someone does something with it, so sad to see it abandoned.

My Dad worked there as an instructor, on sabbatical from the RAF. He was offered a permanent position (Warden?) but my Mum couldn't face living on the island. I was just a young kid at the time
@stephenforrow23336 жыл бұрын
It is a real pity that it is no longer an adventure centre. It would be of much more use to Plymouth than some ridiculous 'luxury hotel'

If I owned the island I'd certainly think of ways to turn it into some kind of tourist attraction, for example by running boatloads of tourists there several times a day so they could wander round for an hour clicking their cameras at say £25 a head..;)
@stevenwarne696 жыл бұрын
Best chance of getting there is to get a small boat and leave the hoe at night time there's no security just watch out for police boats going by

I spent two weeks on Drakes Island as a 14 year old when it was used as an outward bound center. Those tunnels are creepy as f*ck......
@stumccabe4 жыл бұрын
You can tell immediately that this is several years old because Drake is referred to as a hero - today's woke BBC would describe him as some sort of bigot. The BBC must be destroyed.
