I think he was rather split on it. He couldn't help but love Wuji and be proud of him but then he resented that fact in and of itself. So he tried to get rid of this unwanted emotion by turning Wuji into his own likeness forever: bitter and full of pain. Wuji wasn't his biological son but he could make him be like him forever. If he couldn't bring himself to snuff out the only light in his life, he would mute it. Make it more acceptable to him. It wasn't even necessarily revenge on Wuji, it was revenge on his wife and brother. Love and hatred are really close together. The emperor loved Wuji, but he ultimately also couldn't let go of his hatred and bitterness towards his parents, life, fate, brother and wife. Poor man. Being consumed by hatred is the worst fate.

I know that this was ancient times and norms and values were different but from my modern perspective I feel like the emperor's revenge would have been better if he had both the empress and his brother killed (maybe making it look like an accident) and before doing so tell them that their son would never know the truth. He would live as the emperor's son and he would only ever think of the emperor as his father. After Prince Virtue died nobody would light incense for him or remember him. He would be gone. He would die knowing that his own flesh and blood would forever remember and love someone else as their father. He could have had all of Wuji's love and respect for himself forever. Love is stronger than blood. Wuji would have always been the emperor's son. Nobody would have known. I know killing people is not ok but in this fantasy world, considering what the empress and prince virtue did, I don't think I would blame the emperor for wanting revenge on them. After all, all he wanted was for Wuji to be his son and they stole that chance from him. Forever. They took from him, the one thing he ever wanted.
