A lot of people say how Naoki is still giving Kotoko mixed signals in episode 9. But he literally made a confession to Kotoko in the last episode and basically was trying to tell her he wants to date her, but Kotoko didn’t get it. Actually in this episode Naoki very much begins to consider himself to be Kotoko’s boyfriend. In Japanese culture, calling a person by his/her given name without honorifics is a very intimate gesture. Referring to the opposite sex without any honorifics is literally reserved for only family and lovers. Naoki has always referred to Kotoko and everyone else with honorifics, even with his close friend in high school. That’s why when he accidentally called Kotoko by her given name during the tennis match, Kotoko later on was really happy and teased him about it. If you listen closely, he drops honorifics for Kotoko starting this episode. In western cultures, the extensive scenes of physical contacts, sexual attractions, and explicit scenes of kissing, touching, and steamy sex are a lot of times considered a general expression of the passion and love between characters. Meanwhile, the contemporary general public of Eastern Asia would very likely consider that to be too graphic and unnecessarily vulgar. Therefore, Japanese and many eastern Asian romantic drama is all about the details, and the sweetest part is always in the details. You have to place things in the comparatively more reserved culture and timeframe of Japan in the early 1990s when you consider their actions.

If you notice Naoki's actions, you see his subtle love. He went to the tennis court to see Kotoko bc he missed her. It's the only place they can see each other we all know he doesn't need to practice, it's bc of Kotoko. When he heard Kotoko was acting out, he was immediately worried that's why he met up with Yuki in hopes of finding out why. Once he found out why, he assured her that it's just a misunderstanding, he's not teaching that girl isn't seeing anyone. He didn't want to see Kotoko down neither for her to believe he's seeing someone else.

He wanted to live on his own for a while, Kotoko was the only one he invited then he even confessed a 2nd time but Kotoko being Kotoko fell asleep. That time he shared he didn't want to let his mom win otherwise he would've done something with her as he wanted. I think that's partly why he needed time to make sense of everything (his mom) but he came to accept it whilst living on his own.

After rewatching several times, I figured it out that on season 2, when kotoko had the forced planned bd party for kin-chan which is literally for Chris, kin chan is mad, at that time when kotoko talked abt it to naoki, naoki said if you guys kept forcing or teasing him, he would run away from it bc he was still immature abt it and didn't know how to handle it. This is exactly what was happened to naoki in first season, mama irie literally forcing him and kotoko relationship so much... By living alone and distancing from her and his family, he find to figure out his true feeling not only to kotoko but also for his living/for future.

When jinko and satomi said that he needs to pick his words carefully while telling her directly to give up on him he kind of hits a realization there that he needs to be more open to her about this misunderstanding. As you see instead of telling her to give up on him entirely as what kotoko would want to do as they had a conversation after that encounter with kotoko's friends. He explained to her what exactly happened and what's the situation linking him and Matsumoto. He made sure that she understands the explanation by asking her if she really approved of him and Matsumoto together in which the latter responded no.

This series is my medicine.. I always watch all version whenever I'm down but this version is my favorite 😍😌..i can see a lot of comments about Irie kun being a red flag. Kin chan is definitely a very good catch but Kotoko's character suits Naoki better. He showed a lot of patience, tells all his secrets and shows weaknesses to Kotoko, always initiated intimacy(Kotoko only initiated their kiss once which is their wedding day), always helped Kotoko despite all troubles, he also pushed Kotoko to have her own dream like how she helped him find his own dream. As what Naoki said, he can do 90% while Kotoko can do the 10% that he can't do. Both of their weaknesses and strength compliments each other. Both of them are showing character development because they are together which were expressed very well on this version

Both of them are shown to be in different departments in different buildings and their cafeteria is shown on the ground floor. Naoki does not have any friends in the literature department and it wouldn't make any sense for a him to meet any literature faculty. Kotoko is lost and not in her right state of mind, so she won't go to the engineering department. Also, right before this scene, she told her friends that she has a class to attend, so she is definitely in her own department. So, it's Naoki who is in the literature department. He probably missed her and went to sneak a look at her. Although, he will never agree that he missed her. 28:08 Even Sudo san realises that Naoki is looking for Kotoko. There are so many hate going towards Kin-chan in the comments just because he wiretapped the conversation once, follows them on a date, and that one thing that will happened later on. You all keep forgetting that Naoki is the main male lead of this show and will always have the favor whatever he does or his personality is. But when you objectively look at their situation and base things in real life, the one who deserve better is Kin-chan. We don't have bits of POV of Kinnosuke because he isn't the main lead but by context, all those years he longed for Kotoko, plays his chances everytime, and also obviously have genuine feelings for her. Naoki on the other hand treated Kotoko like trash everytime he is annoyed, confused, or what you apparently called 'jealous' (especially in the early episodes). Gaslighting her by taking advantage of her feelings and making all things always in his favor. He keeps misleading her despite knowing that Kotoko isn't the brightest. That is way more toxic than just being blindly in love like Kin-chan, especially for people who is still growing up. Also, just because Naoki has a boring upbringing, and now confused with his feelings, doesn't mean he have the gatepass to be mean and insensitive. Alas, I don't also like the idea of Kotoko being together with Kinnosuke. Kotoko is also in a way taking advantage of him. She never established boundaries between them and she just keeps on accepting everything Kin-chan gives her. Kotoko is aware that she definitely likes Naoki but never really sorted things out with Kin-chan. She and her friends are keeping him on a bench in case she won't end up with Naoki. And lastly, taking consideration of all the actions they all have done, Kotoko is the one who is obssesive, while Kin-chan is again, just blinded by love. I even commend Kinnosuke for turning that blindness to make himself better by working hard, and not just going after the ones he like. It shows that he also sees himself and he isn't just crazy in love with Kotoko. Also, Naoki didn't 'literally confessed' in the last episode. They just eat together and he said that he doesn't hate her. Naoki being smart, and him knowing Kotoko is slow in comprehension, he should know that unless it's stated directly, he never really did confess.

I've been holding off watching this for sooo long just coz everyone was saying how much of a red flag the main guy was... finally decided to watch and the day I commented this is already my 2nd time watching it. Naoki for me wasn't that big of a red flag at all... He has always given hints that he likes Kotoko but it was too subtle for Kotoko to see them, even in this episode Naoki really went out and tried to explain his living situation without directly explaining it to her, so that Kotoko knows that he's not living with a girl. (Over all opinion) Sure, Naoki was a bit cold and mean even on Mischievous kiss 2 but holy shit Kotoko is a handful, I sometimesjust hope she calms down lol... also Naoki's mother is crazy, Kotoko and Naoki couldn't even have a say or suggestion about their own wedding, I'd be pissed if my future mother in all did that. I've only ever seen this version... never read the original story and I have never watched any of the other adaptations (soon tho)

I just started watching this version too and I love it! I've seen some of the others and read the manga and watched the anime. I agree that he isn't as much of a red flag. He does show Kotoko in little ways that he values her, he just doesn't get emotions well. Also, I learned recently that this story is based on the authors life and her and her husband were very happy together until she died tragically. He's never remarried and is involved with this series. He said it made him happy to see his name next to his wife's again.

Its so frustrating to see so many people thinking Naoki is a red flag and he is to blame in this episode too. I know we're seeing from kotoko's pov hence it might seem like naoki doesn't like her but if you really noticed from the very beginning (esp from ep3), naoki has been very much interested in kotoko. This ep the poor guy didn't even do anything, it was all kotoko's assumption about how they might be living together and she suffered all by herself as result of that, which I dont't blame her for obv. She can't fathom Naoki ever liking her because he is cold most of the times. But we as viewers have been shown his pov from the earlier episodes (eg. him eating her chocolate and staring at it somewhat melancholically , him helping out with her homework at late night. him asking if she went to her dad's restaurant to meet kinchan and being shocked to hear she will be moving out, also this ep he went to tennis practice to check on kotoko and also tries to ask yuki about her ) As others mentioned, he kind of confessed his feelings to kotoko last episode too in typical tsundere way. Yes it would have made life easier if he just expressed directly, but naoki just isn't that kind of person. Not to mention, he's still figuring things out as it's a new experience for him too. Hence why it might seem like he's giving mixed signals but he really isn't. From his perspective even kotoko might be giving mixed signal because he thought kotoko and that senior might be dating and so he agreed to matsumoto's date infront of kotoko (which was kinda immature of him to do). Irl many of us would have probably given up on Naoki, I guess I would too tbh. But that's why kotoko is amazing. The way she can love someone like this without asking for anything back. She says in this ep to her dad that it didn't matter if Naoki didn't love her back. That is also one of the reasons Naoki fell in love with her (he says this in S2). Naoki is a complex character and he is easily misunderstood because he's not the typical male lead who is always sweet towards female lead. But at least in this version, it is shown very clearly that Naoki has always had feelings for kotoko from early on.
