"Are you ready...?" she asked, hesitating, a mere whisper, barely carried by the snow. Slowing down to match her step with mine as she glanced back at me, I could not help but focus my eyes on her instead of the looming structure we were headed to. I could see the trepidation in her eyes... her usually pale cheeks and nose were reddened by the cold, and her dark, typically closed-off gaze reached out a warmth like the tongue of a flame, reaching, reaching, aching to dance with whatever lurked beneath mine own facade... We were both not ready, and she knew it, yet we marched on in the snow, _crunch, crunch,_ beneath our feet as we inched closer and closer to our fate. She looked ahead of her again as I stalked behind her in silence, until I finally found a voice in me. It came out hoarse, more of an unholy screech than a human speaking voice, as I said, "I am stuck in a perpetual state of back and forth. I take one step towards readiness, only to be pulled back towards dread..." I coughed twice before continuting, "and yet I am not fully in the middle... I am both, at once, and neither. It is as if I am nothing, and yet I exist, all at once... it is dizzying, if you can believe it." She sighed softly, craned her head back to glance at me one more time. Only now, she smiled. "I am quite sure that whatever awaits us within feels exactly the same way."

*Between timing and distance we ended up walking across the field to the same work every morning.* It was awkward. I was so much taller, and she was quiet with a dark feel about her. But, I'd made her smile a few times. Like they say "If you can make her smile, she'll swallow all wearing a latex catsuit, no dinner needed..." or something like that. That morning, it was so cold I could barely feel my face, sneezing once while still 20 feet off.
