Call it beginners luck if you like. But I'll surmise I picked just the right tips for recovering my sad starts from the gazillion tips on the internet. The Mycorrhizae powder might as well be fairy dust capable of some serious super powers.

One week update after first potting up had to be shared, otherwise I may have had some skeptics out there thinking I did the old switcheroo on ya.

Rachel when you fertilize your plants or seedlings add 1 tbsp of epsom salt per gallon of water! When they start flowering I would give them a feeding of epsom salt every 10 days or so. They will thank you for it! Been doing it for years and the harvest is incredible!
@devp700

Yes, Epsom salt gives the plants Magnesium which strengthens the plant and take away the purple ness away. It’s great to give plants Epsom salt at the flowering stage so you blossoms don’t fall off the plant- especially with peppers.

Congrats they look great... I am also a first time seed starter and it shocked me when they actually sprouted and grew. I swear i check on them 5 to 6 times a day. I don't know what i expect them to do but i still can't stop myself from looking 😆. You keep doing things your way as i think that's the only way we really learn... I've watched a thousand videos on how to grow a thousand things and last year i just put a seed in the ground surrounded by grass and weeds to see of its grow... I got 3 20 lb watermelons from that seed. Never watered or fertilized or prepped the ground. Sometimes i think some people make gardening to complicated. Experiment and learn...Amy

Hi Rachel, I don't think it is beginner's luck at all. You decided you wanted to do something and you did your research and put in the work. There is no one way to do anything, but I'm afraid the naysayers would disagree. Just pay no mind to negativism and continue to do you. It is simply a matter of knowing what the plant needs and providing it as best you can. I think nature does all the real work. The tenacity of a tiny seed is both humbling and miraculous. I am so glad you decided to start your garden from seed as it brings such a feeling of joy and accomplishment in my experience. Your starts look fantastic! Wishing you a bountiful harvest. All my best, Francine 💕😊

I think people see people who have been doing it for awhile and have figured out what works and doesn't work for them and make it look easy when it isn't. Great to see you starting from seed. I can see you move into seed saving and starting as you've got the whole canning thing down. I like to sow densely in trays before transplanting the small seedlings into modules too and larger seeds like cucumber, melon, aond squash I start in a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag. 3 days in a dark place at temps above room temperature and the seeds are germinated and have the first root, and 3 more days after popping into soil and I now have squash as the first plants already!

Your starts look great. No sweat on the abused plants. They are probably going to be just as big as the rest by now 👍🏻 (By now they are probably huge and in the ground) I've been gardening for decades now and I never stop learning. I live on the Minnesota/Canada border and with the help of some cold tunnels I have had my brassicas in the ground since late April. (We are still getting hard freezes at night) I harvested my first cutting of broccoli last week 😃 I started my seeds in march. Once your seedlings have a couple sets of true leaves pop them right in the ground and be amazed 😍 our growing zone is 3a and I have had broccoli, celery, carrots, onions, kohlrabi, lettuce, kale, spinach, peas, chard, radish, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels in the ground for well over a month and longer for some of the hardier stuff. I love watching other gardeners and learning from them. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Look forward to seeing your progress.

I think they look very good.....yeah I wouldn't have transplanted them so tiny like that but you got it to work. And not that I am right at all, but I never fertilize anything at all....from seed to harvest....I do not buy anything for any of my garden in the way to fertilize. I do live on the farm and have nice black dirt and use chicken barn waste where it stretches. Anyway, my point is to say if there is anyone out there that is like me and gets overwhelmed with all the adding this and that to plants, I think if you start with very good organic plant soil for potting ( I don't even use seed starting mix) and can put your plants in healthy soil it's worth a try. I think your starts will produce great! This is fun to watch! Thanks.

I dont use Fish Fertilizer to water my plants still too young but instead, I used Neptune Seaweed 0-0-1 is odorless and very good for young plants after when they are ready to be planted to their final place in May I will start using FoxFarm Trio... I planted my super-hot peppers on February 1 and my tomatoes on March 1 and they are doing Amazing. Also, you shouldn't transplant your plants until the 4th leaves are grown up because that is the real leave by transplanting them with 2 leaves you're taking a risk of killing them... Take this advice from a 25-year-old gardener 🤗🙌

Ive transplanted literally 100s of thousands of plants for my old job and you were being super gentle. Did you transplant a little small? Sure, but they did nicely. People would be horrified if they ever watched me plant like I used to in the nursery flats lol as long as you don't break the stem or bury a crown/growing point(on some plants only ) they just pull themselves up and away they grow. You are warmer than me by a zone despite being in the same state. But I have plenty under grow lights and just started all my tomatoes but my last frost date is may 4th this year (that seems early for us). I took a few little blue curly kale out last week to see if they are okay. They are covered under frost cloth. I'm this close to getting plastic on my hoop house and for the new one to be delivered 🙃 😅 I've got planting fever and watching all the youtubers all planting is making it worse.

I am NOT a morning person, so I have my lights on for 18 hours starting at 7 am. Let me tell you, every morning I cuss those lights coming on! But I don't mind the lights at night! Happy growing!!

My tomato and pepper seedlings are much smaller than that, and they are like a month old already... what could be going on?

Could be your soil mix? Seed starter mix is easiest for roots to push and grow through vs. heavier potting mixes. Just don't forget that seed starting mixes don't have any fertilizer that your starts need usually at about 2 weeks after sprouting or first true leaves. Could also be temperature? If warm weather crops are too cold, they can have stunted growth. I am definitely not an expert but hope this might give you some ideas of what to try. Good luck!

Or is stressed by temperature or uneven watering. I have had purple leaves on tomato seedlings that did OK. I do add phosphorus to adult plants when they are flowering and fruiting.
