Thank you so much for this video. Just yesterday, we were discussing the condition of our shrubs and plants in our HOA in Manchester. You have given me some hope. I just went out and scratched the bark of some that look so dead. There was green when I scratched it. There is hope!

My Hellebores got zapped and are all brown. NOW?? Rebounding, with blooms already, like yours. I'm very concerned about my Redtips and Candytuft. The ivy is bare now. I've NEVER seen that happen, but it was out of hand anyhow. Forsythia is crispy, so there might be no blooms. Gaura?? I just put in a dozen, so I'm hoping they survive. Daffs are up and some are already budded. Guess I'll find out as things warm. Whew. Thanks for this info.

I also saw that my area had a minus19 degree wind chill along with the minus 4 degree temps during the nights. I was ready to just clear everything out and compost them but will now wait to hopefully see if there's anything still alive. Thanks for this video, Troy!

Thank you! I’m so worried of what to do with my evergreen shrubs they all look brown. My camellias, sunshine ligustrum, aucuba, skip laurel, jubilation gardenia, mahonia, juliet cleyera and especially fatsia I think it is dead which is sad because I had it for 2 years outside. I calm down now after watching your video, I thought of giving up gardening before watching this video. I live in zone 7b Northeast Mississippi.

Same in Memphis (zone 7b). Planted 6 encore azaleas in the summer and I'm prepared to dig them up and replace rhem. Old shrubs like camellias and nandina at least 50 years old were completely defoliated and I'll try cutting them back hard before I give up on them.

May have lost a 3rd year Crepe Myrtle only time will tell. Rosemary and a thyme that I transplanted just a few months ago seem to be dead, but I will wait a bit for them. A fantastic kale that I started from seed in Feb 2020 succumbed to the flash freeze. I wish I knew the variety. I have cut the damaged leaves (last years growth) off my hellebores and they are already bouncing back and blooming.

When can I clean up the nadinas. They are totally brown. My Manhattans are losing all there leaves. They are really tall. Also scared for my Japanese Maple. How can I take.care.of these.

I have a tree I am very worried about. It is an Araucaria angustifolia, a conifer from the mountains of Southern Brazil. After doing some research on the conditions it experiences where it is from I planted one in my yard in an unprotected spot in the Spring of 2020. It has done great and grown like crazy. The Winters we have experienced here in Nashville, up to this year, have not fazed it at all, but the flash freeze may have done it in. It turned quite brown but I can still see a tinge of green in many areas so I will wait and see what it does or doesn't do this Spring. Luckily my Aspidistras, which are in a very protected spot, stayed nice and green and seem to have suffered very little if any damage.

Been wondering what is wrong with the Laurels I've seen looking dead while driving about town. Glad to know it's probably cell damage within the leaves and not the whole plant with damage. To know the stem could still be alive may make one pause before cutting your laurel down. WAIT for spring to see any green and access any dead plants.

I have 3 huge holly trees in the front of my house and they are in terrible shape. I have one that is green on one side and totally dead on the other. I’m devastated because these trees are formed to make my house look even. I have no idea what to do. Cut all of them down?

One thing that didn't seem to get hit for us is Nandinas. The ones I see in the neighborhood all look good. I am quite surprised that Mood Ring Podocarpus are NOT fried.

Sorry if I missed seeing a comment but what about the Leyland Cypress trees. They are brown/orange and look horrible. On some there is green inside closer to the main trunk, but will these lose the brown stuff or bud out with new green? Everywhere I go in Williamson County these trees look bad.

I think those may have taken a real beating. I'm going to just see what happens and cut them back to any remaining true living material and seeing what happens this year. I they look too scruffy in about 16 months from now I'm not opposed to just starting over in '24

I'm concerned about the plants in the nurseries and plant farms in Middle Tennessee. There will probably be such a scarcity or shortage of replacement plants that I as an 87-year-old can't afford to replace what I feel sure I am going to lose. My azaleas and nandinas look like they are gone forever.

Same here in Memphis (zone 7b). We had extremely drying winds after the temperature drop. Nothing here, like mountains or even hills, to stop those winds coming from the west. I used frost blankets before the severe weather hit but it didn't seem to help since we had snow and freezing rain too. I have mostly bare sticks everywhere but a few azaleas and abelias are showing small signs of recovery. I don't think the gardenias or camellias will come back. My nandinas are probably over 50 years old and I've never had one stripped of foliage before.

Definitely defoliated my pineapple guava's here in Memphis. Hopefully the stems survived but if not they always come back from the roots.

Mine as well but I did the scratch test in 3 spots and they were green so im.hopeful they will bounce back
