As a newcomer trying to get a paper published, the chances of establishing a relationship with the editor is zero. A typical journal receives hundreds if not thousands of submissions every month. That's just fact. You're not going to have a cozy relationship with anyone on the editorial team.

Depending on your area of study, employer support, and funding, this video may not apply. In my field, most scholarly journals have article processing charges or APCs that are the equivalent of buying a decent used car. This places most solo researchers out of most publishers. This leaves the professional journals as the only viable alternative.
