I found it was helpful to schedule a 9-5, 5 day week where the weekend was sacred. Treat a Phd like paid employment and when it's time to party, party! When it's time to work, work!

Great advice for new PhD students! I'll add to also start writing early in the PhD and write up as you go along!

There's basically two ways to write up your thesis : either write up as you go along, or wait until your research is finished then write up at the end. There's no one method better than the other, just what's the right way for each individual.

I am amazed how all these tips would come in handy even for a would be social science PhD student (like me). I have been following you for over a year now, sometimes I feel things overwhelming but then I realise thank goodness I know all these things now, I can be better prepared. Thanks Andy. Great work. Love and good wishes from India.

I’m in my 4th week so far and already I can’t find my bearing. Worst of it, is because of the language. (Korean language). How do I deal with this? I’m majoring in social welfare.
