I would strongly advise people against including a picture or personal identifying information (e.g., birthday) in a CV. There may be some jobs where these things are necessary but I can't think of any in academia. I would also probably advise against getting too fancy with visual formatting, especially for academic jobs. I think the examples from mid journey in the video are probably too much. The CV should have a coherent visual structure, and maybe a bit of color, but simplicity is your friend. Using too many colors, fonts, or other design elements will only make it harder for someone to quickly read and internalize the information in a CV. Too many colors or fonts is probably anything more than 2; anything more will likely do more to distract than to help. People should also consider the level of position they're applying to when organizing information. People applying for junior faculty positions may want to include education information higher in the CV because where you went to school can have a big effect on how people evaluate your record. Publications are important but junior faculty generally don't have a lot of publications so where someone is trained can be a critical piece of information.

Interestingly, the opposite is done in some countries. In France the vast majority of CVs look like his midjourney exemple. Mainly outside of academia though.

While understand you are from a background in Chemistry, I would like to understand how different a thesis in Literature would be from a thesis based on science.

What if you have lost momentum or never even had any major publications or grants? I.e. people who are unhappy in work and most likely to be looking at moving on. Should they just give up? Someone churning out publications and rolling in grant money is probably pretty happy where they are, unless of course they are seeking a higher appointment because they can't get promoted internally. Edit: I also suspect the sort of people who are professionally academically successful already I.e. have a lot to put on a cv are well aware to make these accomplishments very obvious to prospective employers. The limiting factor in getting a job really isn't a badly structured cv it's not having the right material to fill it with. The more I think about this video the more pointless it seems. Who is this for?

Honestly I am not really sure about this guide. Personally what drives people to watch these videos is insecurity or fear of not fitting a certain profile. If I don't have any recent experience to "build up the momentum" I am still stuck i.e. this video is useless for me and people like me.

I am torn between "appeal" and "national requirements" that ask of me to produce lengthy WoTs for the upload on State websites... and, as you can imagine, one gets tired of doing everything twice, so I ended up using the same "long list of things" for the upload on my Uni website as well. But your video prompted me to produce something that is more... how could I put it? Captivating.

I don't understand Andy's credentials about the subject... he was never a professor or PI. How can he teach people what it is a "perfect" resume?

He certainly has spent lots on time in academia and he is an outstanding science communicator. And he has been a professor. So, he does have the skills for advising in such a topic.

@@edgarrodriguez8973 So have I, and I'm in no place to give people advice about resumes. Being a science communicator means nothing (he is not a science comm but whatever). What I meant about PI is that he at the very least has to have HIRED people to be able to judge resumes. Even then it would be only his opinion when he is hiring, but at least it's something. It seems professor means different things for you and I. Where I live, every professor is a PI, in a larger or smaller scale. For what he has told about his story he has never done that.

@@caioporto9234 Hi Caio. A fair criticism. I have been a PI on a grant and used that money to employ a research assistant for one year on a part time basis.

@@DrAndyStapleton Oh ok, fair enough. I didn't know you have been a PI. I assumed based on other videos I have watched, my bad. It's very surprising the difference between rules in each country. Here you can only get a grant or be a PI if you were tenured.
