I think we're seeing the last months of Dominic Thiem's career. I can't imagine him going on like this in 2025, and judging from his own words, he probably can't either. His comeback which started in 2022 is probably one of the most tragically failed comebacks of all time. But what a fantastic, unique and irreplaceable player he was. Still a treat to watch, even as a shadow of a shadow of a shadow of his former self.

My gosh, thiem had a super backhand. Now he slices most of the time. A weak serve and a weak forehand. So sad his injuries destroyed him
@J.-M.
@J.-M. 17 күн бұрын
The thing is that his backhand was the only shot that was as good as it was in his prime when he started his comeback in 2022. It got even better in the following months, I still remember his indoor matches in October 2022 when his backhand was possibly better than ever. The highlights still show those insanely fantastic backhands he was hitting there. But even his backhand has deteriorated in 2023, and nothing has improved… So he now doesn't have any first-class shot anymore.

I don’t think he slices very often - even if he did, Dimitrov and Dan Evans show it’s not always a weakness. I think he now just rolls his backhand in without the firepower it had before, so although it still looks nice it isn’t going to trouble anyone
@J.-M.
@J.-M. 17 күн бұрын
@@kenkozawa9810 Exactly. I was already feeling 8 or 9 years ago that his body may not last too long. When so many people were saying with absolute certainty he would win "many Roland Garros titles" after Rafa retires, I was already thinking he might get too old and irrelevant when Rafa retires with his physically taxing playing style (they simultaneously massively underestimated Rafa's longevity and overrestimated Dominic's durability). He may even retire earlier than Rafa...
@J.-M.
@J.-M. 17 күн бұрын
@@imrizzle83 He was already slicing very often in 2019 and especially in 2020, it was a major tactic that brought him his US Open title. He may have gotten into this habit a little bit too much over time, which is what happens to many ageing one-handers. Most of them keep slicing more when they get older, weaker, slower and less confident.

I think a part of Domi's problem is that he plays most shots and rallies on the back foot. Falling away from the court, moving back after each strike. Very rarely is he taking the ball with his weight forward, coming into the court. He's letting himself being bullied and it's sad to see.

I honestly feel like the way forward for thiem is to reconstruct himself to focus exclusively on his backhand for offense. its clear his forehand will never be a weapon again, so I feel like he should just focus on defense on the forehand side and use his backhand side to construct his offense. doing this will, of course, never get him back to the top of the game...but I honestly think it would be a step above what he's doing now. - there was a point early on in his come back when he was playing much more aggressively with his backhand and playing pretty conservatively with his forehand, and I felt like he was a top 30 player doing that. He still had amazing confidence with his backhand at the time. Since then, I feel like his focus on trying to rekindle his forehand has cost him his backhand potency. now he is toothless on both wings. - I guess, though, that if he ever reached a point where he believed what I was saying (that he should give up on his forehand and try to find a new way to win) that he would just retire, unfortunately.

So you know what happened. He was #3 before the injury. He could obviously never get back to his old level after the injury. It was a serious, complicated injury, the rehabilitation took 9 months, and the wrist was crucial for his forehand. He could never recover his old forehand quality after the wrist injury, the damage was probably irreversible. His biggest weapon is gone forever. Wrist injuries are some of the worst things for tennis players, plus his wrist has been acting up again lately. And he's getting old.

Moro Canas is ranked 240, and his highest was 221. This is his first ever ATP maindraw match. Beating the world 105, whoever that is, is a massive win for him.....that's why she said it.

It's amazing that every comment here is about Thiem. It shows how dearly he's loved by the fans. Take it and move on, for all our sake, please.
