Required viewing for anyone teaching themselves to draw! Gesture drawings are a foundation exercise that trains the artist to identify the essential movement and physics in a depiction of a body. Notice how Jess nails down the relationship of the shoulders to the hips- usually tilted in opposite angles- right away with just a simple mark or two. We also noticed that Jess doesn't cheat on her time limit, because that's a huge part of getting the benefit of the exercise. Can't wait for part 2!

It was so fun to see how much my figures improved from the first until the last. I have never practice drawing people that much because it is a process that intimidates me but this really was so fun and I cannot wait to do it again soon! The biggest challenge for me was making the hands and feet not look so wonky haha!

This really takes me back to Freshman Foundation in art school. I was the tense kid in class who could never just relax and draw, but it was exercises like this one that allowed me to draw from the soul and not the brain. I tried making one small painting for each day. And I also noticed a progress in each one.
