Im the oppsite. I have a concept in mind, start to draw it, only to then realise that I have no details at all. I don't know what the person is wearing, I don't know where this other arm is supposed to go. That's why a lot of my characters literally all have the same shirt '-'. So be glad that you have those details! Just keep trying! You'll get there eventuelly!

This is legit me. I have such beautiful and detailed, complex fantasy images, and I CAN'T FRICKIN PUT THEM ON PAPER!!! Then again, it's usually not a character that's the main focus in those, it's the beautiful, fantasy landscape of giant glowing mushrooms illuminating a vast, cavernous pocket deep under the earth. The soft blue light dancing on the surface of the little rivers and streams that were the reason that the entire cave even exists! It started as a small crack in the ground from the running water above, and it carried the seeds of life down underground with its currents. And then eons later, it's a gorgeous underground landscape full of vibrant magical flora and fauna! Sometimes it's a magical forest of glowing trees in a misty grove, full of glowing animals and insects, and a beautiful elven woman, completely cut off from civilization by choice, examining a beautiful, glowing lily, gently caressing it with her slender fingers, taking joy in something as simple as the life of a flower! It's so beautiful in my head and I hate that I don't feel like I'm at the level of skilled enough to even attempt it. Holy shit I think I'm gonna cry, the image is so pretty! Sorry for the tangent, I kinda just went off.

I know that it doesn't interest everyone who draws, but I feel that my art improves significantly when I start drawing comics! It forces you to think about the context around your character and what do you want the public to understand from each scene. I recommend it as practice for anyone who has difficulties at the moment to come with those kinds of things naturally. No need to do a big comic for that, just a one-page comic makes your brain practice those things.

I genuinely recommend that when you guys think the image in your head is exactly how you want the drawing to be, pay a lot more attention to the details, but in your head. What I mean is that usually the "detailed" drawing we have in our heads is not really that detailed, because our brain finishes what's not complete. Therefore, if you force yourself to see the little things in the illustration you're imagining, all the problems it actually has will come up.

actually ... i prefer working with the head first because it helps set the mood for the rest of the picture. the main thing, as lavender towne points out, is to mark out a rough of the entire pose first to get your proportions right and to make sure it fits in the canvas or comic frame or wherever it's going to go. if unsure, you can also do some quick thumbnails first until you get to know your character.

Not an art teacher but I’ve said it sometimes to kids younger than me when they show me their art. I’ll say something like “woah she looks so pretty!!” Etc. The reason why I said it is because I know that some people can’t take critique that well and I don’t want them to feel down about their drawing because when they’re young, having motivation and happiness in their drawing is really important. But if they asked me for criticism, I’ll def tell them. I’m sure your art teachers will point some stuff out if you ask 😊

I will admit, I don’t like hearing artists being self deprecating, especially since I have a bad habit of doing that. HOWEVER, I always appreciate it when artists explain that they want to improve on something or when they explain about how they have been struggling with art block/motivation/etc. I remember looking at artists that were better than me and feeling bad because I thought they never struggled at all. But sometimes they would mention that they have been struggling with a part of their art in one way or another, and that makes me feel less alone. I know a phrased that to make it sound like “I enjoy seeing other artists suffer,” which is not what I mean. Whenever art it is are honest with their struggles but also talk about how they want to improve or help others by learning from their experience, it makes me feel so much better about my own art. It also makes me look at other people’s art in admiration and respect instead of thinking “I will never be as good as them.” Even something as simple as “I’ve been trying to get better at (blank) lately, and I wanted to practice it in this drawing. I don’t think it turned out the best, but I’m proud of myself for trying and I know why I can try to do next time!” There’s a difference with being self deprecating and being honest. Thank you so much for sharing you experience with us! I know it can be intimidating, but hearing your experience and having the desire to improve makes me feel better about my own insecurities with my art. Sorry this was a long ramble, but I just had a bit to say on the matter

I think something important tat think about for your case is that as humans the greatest source of pleasure or happiness when working towards a goal is noticing us improving towards whatever goal we may have in mind, in this case, art. Any time you are feeling down about your art, take some time to look back and see how far you’ve come. I definitely agree that when artists recognize what they need to work on it puts themselves in the same position as you, in that, we are always looking to move up to the next step in improving. For me, characters with bangs usually depend on personality. If a character is supposed to be seductive and attractive then I layer the hair over the bangs and half of the eyes. If the character is more happy and energetic then I will show the eyebrows and eyes above their bangs to show their emotions. Hope this helps anyone.

The very first drawing felt expressive to me somehow. The character was simple but to me that made her read as a nervous people pleaser meeting a new group (my though being like a college freshman) and presenting a pretty blank slate at the meeting. That's at least the story it told me lol A neat analogy for how the dos and don'ts is like when you see family photos and they are posed and smiling directly at the camera, versus still life or photos of activity.

Agreed! I think the difference lies in being aware of the pose's stiffness and using it deliberately to tell a story. If you're drawing a shy people-pleaser it's fitting, but that shouldn't be the only type of person you can draw. I'm a bit guilty of this myself, always drawing people with their faces slightly turned and staring out into the distance. The emotional range of my drawings goes from "dreamy gaze" to "mournful gaze" 😂

It's called breaking immersion or the suspension of reality. If you expect someone to believe and invest in this piece of art, whatever it is, there has to be a reason for things that don't make sense. Otherwise it comes across as lazy. I'm guilty of doing similar things, and in more cartoons styles I do opt for eyebrows over hair and other unrealistic things. But it has to fit the style.

@@hannah-fg5rc and there is a reason for it: 90% of drawings that hide the eyebrows make the character with bangs look unexpressive. as lavendertowne said, this doesn't happen in real life because hair in real life isn't blocks of opaque mass. that's not lazy, and it's something millions of cartoon and even anime art styles do, including some of the most iconic ones in existence. and i think if someone's bothered by eyebrows over the hair, they should be bothered by the hair too because it's equally unrealistic. it's one thing if we're talking about semi-realism. but we're not, as that's a given this wouldn't work there, since the "block hair" problem doesn't really apply with it.

3:20 I think one thing worth adding is that a smile with narrowed eyes tends to present as "mischievous" (including in this very image Haley is drawing), so a lot of artists get around it by drawing a smile with closed eyes instead. It's another one of those style-over-realism things; very few people actually close their eyes when smiling, but in artwork it just looks more friendly than narrowed eyes

I love doing gaps between pieces of the hair, I’ve been doing that for a while, because I color hair solid colors most of the time. As long with giving hair random strands coming off the sides. Just gives it a pop to see the background through.

An advice for eyebrows, I usually make it dependant on the visibility through the hair style, if there's no hair, the eyebrows will be 100% visible but if there's hair over them, I take the opacity to like 50%. It's a very good compromise between people who want to show them no matter what and people who don't.

I recommend thinking about posing and like hairstyles and backgrounds and stuff for a couple of minutes, around 5 - 10 mins. It can really help because you won't have to think about what you're going to draw while you're drawing it, you can just start drawing what you planned which makes drawing much easier, make sure you don't plan stuff too stiff or dull, which is basically what Lavender's saying. Also put on a video from your favourite youtuber, listen to your favourite song, watch tiktoks, etc etc. It makes you super calm and comfortable. This may not work for everyone but it's really helpful for me so I recommend it. Hope this helps!

Drawing the gesture before the anatomy is HUGE in making expressive art! Drawing the anatomy first can make the artist unintentionally ignore the pose, which you said perfectly in the video. Also, drawing the gesture can help generally place things, like where clothing wrinkles fall, because it helps show where weight is distributed in the character. Thank you for this video!

One good way to practice body types is to look at photos of real people and try to draw their bodies: first go off the basic shapes, then add in details. It might be boring, but it really helps you to understand how muscles, bones and structure makes someone look a certain way. It also helps you to distinguish between different people of different genders and ages.

I think the first drawing is adorable and perfect for a comics for example, when you don't want to add too much detail and you don't need to convey personality in every single drawing.

What I often do is take out a pad of paper and start doing small sketches of characters in different positions and angles for practice, and if I happen to like one, I'll make it digitally and turn it into a finished peice.

i love your draw this not that videos! more on poses and composition would be great! btw i personally don't like pushing the hips forward on my characters unless there's a specific reason for it. there are plenty of other options such as contraposto, leaning against a wall, striding, leaning to look at something, slumping their shoulders, ...

I was drawing a full image with the Random aesthetic generator to give me a prompt, and every time you brought up a new thing i was like "Did i do this? uhh.. actually yes!" and it made me feel a lot better that i was doing thinks okay. Plus with the scene background, having it set up in the woods, you'd have a more green color palette, with a beach it would be yellows, blues and whatever the suns position is in colors. Color is super important for the finishing picture

what i usually do to eyebrows is draw them in kakegurui style - the part that isn't covered by bangs is a darker color than the one that is so even if the bangs are obscuring the brows u can still see them :)

A good way to add a personality to a characters pose, is to try waking around while leading with different body parts. Start with leading with your toes, knees, hips, stomach, chest, chin, nose, and the forehead. While you’re walking around, try adding a bit more to it. Like, if you’re leading with your chest, and the character you’ve created in your mind with that is very bold, try swinging your arms out wide. This can help find a dramatic, fluid pose that can go well with the personality of the character you create.

I figured a way out the eyebrow controversy is that if you want to make your character really expressive and still are stubborn about showing the eyebrows through, I feel like curving the top or bottom of the eyes in an extreme manner would help a lot in somewhat conveying that specific emotion but that's just a thought

Well, Lavendertowne has been drawing and practicing for a long time, to the point she's gone to school for character design (I think? All o remember is that she's gone to a art university thingy of some sort). Keep practicing and looking for tips and someday you'll be a more experienced artist =]

In one of her videos she covers that a bit, that when you think your art is bad it's bc your visionary skills is higher than your physical skill, and when you're confident in your art it means your physical skill has caught up or surpassed your vision! If you think your art is bad, that just means your eyes and brain learned faster than your hands so repetition is what you might try

Oh my god, I had my drawing tablet infront of me and thought "Why not try this, i mean it couldn't hurt, plus i have artblock so anything to get me out sounds good" and so i tried that final method in which you draw from the feet up and damn wow i feel a lot more confident in my work and it looks so lively! And that's that i've only drawn the basic body shape with the face!! Really good advice, would recommend trying! :D

Im not that good but this is what i try to do: Dont make the skin ashy and as you shade try to shift the hue a bit (i try to use more yellow tinted colors for the palest part and more red tinted colors for the darker parts) and for blush dont make it red just try to get a bit of a reddish pink version of the original skin color
