DRAWING 4 Times QUICKER! How the SIZE of your Drawing AFFECTS the TIME it Takes to Complete!

I talk about how the size of your drawing and how that affects the time it takes you to complete it,
when you double the size of your drawing it increases the work you need to do by a factor of 4, this can be a problem, especially with Photorealism and Hyperrealism portraits art, as they already require a lot of time to complete them.

This does make sense in theory, but it is so much harder to do detail and get good quality on smaller drawings

As a digital artist I've found that starting small for sketching and concepting significantly decreases the amount of time necessary to achieve a suitable level of detail, obviously. But then taking that low resolution sketch that has already defined form and volume, increasing the size of the canvas, then drawing over it with greater fidelity takes significantly less time than simply "Going for it" as one large canvas. Traditional artists will often do the same thing by sketching thumbnails (usually 1x1 inches or about 3x3 cm boxes) then using that thumbnail as a guide to quickly render in a better drawing on a separate piece of paper. This is all fairly obvious to most experienced artists but I figured new or aspiring artists might enjoy this breakdown.

Plato demonstrates this same lesson in his dialogue called Meno. In it, Socrates shows an uneducated, slave boy how to double the area of a square. The boy makes the same mistake of doubling both sides until instructed to draw a line across the diagonal. An important lesson.

Not always the case because the smaller the drawing, the smaller the area where you'll have to squeeze in the details. And sometimes it takes more hours to finish smaller drawings because of how difficult and tricky they are. I agree that deciding the size of the drawing is very important. But I also just want to share what I learned from doing microportraits. I've been doing microportraits a lot recently. I will be happy to, I think you are pressing to hard, maybe? Use a HB pencil and use a more loser grip on your pencil, or try dulling the tip of your pencil down, so it dose not have to much of a sharp point and finally if none of them work try a different type of paper and see if that helps 😊
