I'm using a ordinary drawing set with pencils and charcoal. The charcoal makes it dark, but the camera tricks you a bit because it makes it look a bit darker than it really is.

Absolutely!! You sit two artists down at a table & ask them to use the same reference picture then of course you will get two different pictures. The two artists are obviously going to have different styles. but hopefully in the end you will be able to tell that its the same picture....

I've found that I've been getting into more people and faces as of the last few years and I started out with pages from my Rolling Stone magazines. I did a few where I just took a page with a person on it, cut a wavy line up the middle and drew in the other half, gluing the first half down next to it for reference... (continued due to maximum character amount lol)

Most recently I've done a piece of Lil' Wayne from a page from one of my magazines, however, that one was a full page, I did not cut the magazine page, only used it as a reference. Another thing I've done that has helped me with facial features is replacing the heads/faces of the classics (like the Mona Lisa or American Gothic, for example) with the heads of other people, such as Hall & Oates, which I used their heads on an American Gothic image I recreated.

You are right at some points, but many great artist use mechanical pencil, and being an artist is about finding a style that you feel comfortable with.
