Liked and subscribed, I'm getting into figure drawing, and he is absolutely correct, the more you practice the faster you get better at it. I have been drawing for about a year now and my drawing sessions have picked up considerably the last month or two and I think that was when I made the most progress. The more you draw, the faster you get better, he isn't lying.

Hello Mr. Eviston, I am a student of your online courses. I decided to learn to draw again in February of this year, back then, I didn't think I could draw something as complicated as a piece of fabric or a human body. Damn, I was so wrong. When I was a kid, I always wanted to make something beautiful, I remembered the stair drawing in the textbook and wondered: "How did they make it?". And I tried to copy it. When I was a kid, I just drew things with no expectations, somehow I became a person who was so afraid of failure and mistakes that I fell into a trap, unable to draw anything for many years. But the creative urge is still in me, that's why I chose graphic design, engaging with visual graphics without the drawing skills required. It's just a way to hide from the real desire, I still want to draw. Around December 2022, my class had a problem, I had to miss school for 4 months. Suddenly I had no more reason to avoid drawing, and I struggled. I started my first course without any expectations, bad habits were not learned, and just copied everything I learned in your courses. It was such a stressful time, I drew 5, 6, and 8 hours a day for months until I was exhausted. It's July now, and I'm still drawing a few days a week, I've finally formed a good drawing habit that doesn't burn out anymore. I'm still taking Gesture and Structure courses, still struggling but having fun with it.

Pretty much all of my college professors made this pretty clear from day one in our illustration courses. Like with anything you really have to work for it. And even if somehow you DO intuivitely figure out certain fundamental things without instruction prior, it’s STILL the fundamentals. And you STILL had to figure it out, it didn’t just happen. And where did this figuring out happen? Through drawing and PRACTICE.

I agree. I’ve been practicing portraits and landscapes for quite a few years now and they went from very mediocre/just plain bad to I’m actually extremely proud of them now strictly bc I practiced and studied everyday I’d make sure I’d sketch atleast one portrait a day and I’d constantly be working on a more detailed portrait at the same time. I’d warm up in a sketch book work on the basics like shading, linework and shapes (I’d do this everyday) I became so much better because I practiced. Now if you ask to draw like Kopinski I wouldn’t be able to bc I’ve never practiced that style. Talent really has nothing to do with it or it’s atleast nothing to worry about. My best advice is to just be patient when it comes to becoming better. Drawing skills come very slowly for the most part and only with diligent practice. Observation skills are also a must. When I wasn’t drawing throughout the day I noticed I would start looking for shapes in almost everything lol and the more I did that the better I became at drawing from references. And lastly buy the right tools. Tools are a very important to produce good artwork. Pick a style you’d like to be good at work hard at it be patient with it master it and try learning something else.

Hi Brent, just got a sample of your sphere demo. Very good. You’re specific, even metioning the value number of all areas. Most helpful. I subscribed. I think there are those who can judge distances, angles, values, etc. better then others. Instruction and good teaching ARE important, for sure. I think innate ability counts. Ie. No matter how much more I practiced I never achieved concert level ability on the violin. I had terrific teachers and, for sure, put in the time. However, what I DID achieved surpassed my expectation. Therefore, My old age and experiences tempers your statement. I achieved the best I could be. That now is happening with portriature. Looking forward to waching your video and hope you post more and more recent………

I would dissagree on one aspect, i think some people are born with the talent to draw. I read a comment on youtube where the person said when they were a kid they could draw well and now they cant though i admit maybe they practiced alot as a kid but I think some are born more artistically inclined. That being said ot totally can be taught, thanks for the video.

Talent is the ability to quickly adapt, not the ability to do something with lack of practice or training. Some people take quickly to art. Others have to work at it. That’s all talent is.

You'll have your Kim Jung Gis and your Ronnie Colemans in every profession. Someone has to be at the top and that's fine. Anyone can learn to draw or be a great artist with enough time and dedication just like anyone can build an admirable Physique but I do believe Talent/Genetics plays a role. If you look at all the top performers in sports as an example they all have the perfect limb lengths to perform to the highest level possible. No amount of practice is going to give you Michael Phelps exact body type. Some people are meant to do things, nothing wrong with that either. Everyone should Aim to be the best that THEY can be and not compare yourself to any other individual. The playing field might not be fair but when is it ever ? You'll likely never be Kim Jung gi same as you'll likely never be Ronnie. You might fall short but you may also surpass them. That's up to you to find out. Worst case scenario 10 years down the line you're an amazing artist who draws for a living or you have a top 1% physique that catches everyones eye. Do you really care if you're Ronnie or Kim then ?

Yes. Many of my students are taking my course to prepare for careers in character design and illustration including comic books. Figure drawing is an essential prerequisite to being able to stylize the figure. Professionals in nearly every field from character design in video games and movies, as well as comic book illustration, start with drawing fundamentals, and traditional figure drawing. One of the biggest mistakes students make is rushing into figure drawing before they are ready. Without a solid foundation of basic drawing principles, students really struggle and usually quit because it's too hard.

My goal is to draw realism, cartoon, and comics; I was looking at your book, is that going to teach me all the fundamentals? Moreover, I came across your skill share videos, If I get the book do I need the skill share videos or is one or the other sufficient on their own?

I was in kindergarten for 3 days and I won an art contest for kindergarten - grade 2 . My teachers and headmaster were amazed. My school mates told me I was a suck up for winning so I didn’t draw again until grade 5 another contest. I won out of the whole school. I drew a realistic polar bear walking across broken ice , did I practice it ? No , just loved polar bears . After school my drawing was ripped up in my face , there was a boy who in my opinion was so much better than me. We were bullied told we’d come to nothing. I don’t know why I’m telling you this. Just that I want to draw now I’m 53 a mother of four and I’ve lost a lot of years .

On some level I disagree with the thesis here because the best artists have innate abilities that far exceed others in certain inborn intelligences. One example is in spatial aptitude. However, I can agree that much practice, good instruction, and even desire to excel will be of great help to improve over time.

0:32 Yes. Anyone can learn a skill, but not everyone got the heart for it. Anyone can learn how to sing, but there Are people Naturally gifted. 0:49 That is a Bold claim. Especially since “online courses” Just mean something like KZbin, where You speak, and others listen. 1:26 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ I haven’t had Any training until college and one course in high school, yet I’ve Always Drawn. And what do you mean by “practice?” Because to me, my definition of practice is exercises you do to become better at art. Like the 100 Circles, Squares, Triangles exercise. Every time I feel I need to do a video on this myth, that no one can be talented at anything. You don’t hear someone say “You’re not talented at singing! You just learned it!” Some people Are talented at art and I’ve met people who are Actually talented at art. Just because you’re talented at art, doesn’t mean you know anything about art. Like how forms even work. Just because you can sing, doesn’t mean you have the skills to sing for long, or how to maintain your voice, so you don’t wreck it over time. I love your tutorials, but please, don’t feel resentment that some are talented. We’re literally on the same path as you.

I simply do not understand why people deny that talent exists and is important if you want to pursue a career in art. How can you deny that a people with talent learns much faster and have an easier understanding of art in general? People with talent are prone to have natural abilities to draw things and/or understand shapes and shading just by looking at things, also creativity is an important factor. It baffles me this denial of reality.
