Saying this as someone who was actually extremely sick until I was like 7 or 8, I think his motivation is plenty complex, just not in a way that's immediately obvious or relatable to everyone I wasn't as sick as he was but I can 100% see how being that sick for your entire life, watching everyone around you do everything that you want to do but can't and unable to do anything about it, would spark a lot of resentment. Like obviously he's insane and always has been even as a human but his motivation isn't just evil for evil's sake or wanting to exist without weaknesses for no real reason He wants to exist without weaknesses because, in his mind, having a weakness means a chance of going back to how he was before, weak and sick and miserable. His motivation isn't boring, it stems from a life time of pent up resentment because he had to watch everyone around him live their lives well he couldn't and felt like nobody was really helping him

This is actually a really nice way to think about it, especially since not all people have been extremely sick their entire lives. I can see why it won't be relatable to them. I, however, disagree on his core personality and beliefs. His resentment for other's health doesn't redeem his evil action. He's really rotten to the core. Terminally ill people don't just murder their doctors lol. Yeah I think he's just a coward who is afraid of death and being sick carved it further into his mind.

I think he’s an amazing baddie and the fact that’s he’s unredeemable is part of why. He does not care about anyone and holds nothing sacred. Seeing his hard exterior crack whenever he has unhinged moments is so satisfying. My only question is I missed how he went from a man with a family to a boy with parents [I only watched the anime]. I kinda love him, as a villain. I feel like his reasoning is not only complex, but relatable. He's a coward. He's scared of death, scared of change, scared of everything, basically, and I like that.

Muzan actually has tons of depth to his character that is shown and expanded upon all throughout, even just his introduction has so much packed in there. And he does have his own redeeming qualities, but he doesn't have to be sympathetic to be well written. And the parallels he has with our heroes as well as the themes and buddhist motifs he presents are extremely complex. People don't like him because it's all shown, instead of told like with most anime villains. He's had long, amazing essays written about him and is very much appreciated by those who fully understand his character. He seems to have already been infliential enough to inspire newer villains as many Japanese fans believe Sukuna from JJK took much inspiriation from Muzan

I think it’s the reason I like demon slayer so much. There’s a good character who’s good for the sake of being good and a bad character who is bad for the sake of being bad, the other characters are complex. The way I see it there is nothing wrong with having some simple characters.

I find him to be an interesting contrast to his demons, who do have complex and often tragic backstories. Muzan is the corrupting force, and he almost feels like a force of nature itself. It makes him a really interesting villain.

It’s true, in anime culture these villains have grown more complicated and there’s always twists to why they do what they do, why they are how they are, that for a villain to be evil ‘just because they can’ feels boring. But I like it! I want more of his backstory from when he was younger younger, but even without that, he can just be evil! No good redemption arc, maybe he leaves Tangiro with guilt before he dies, or maybe not! Dudes just evil!

I don’t think he’s evil for evils sake. He was sickly his whole human life and when finally told he was given the medicine it didn’t work like how he was hoping. He got to watch everyone around him do what we would call simple tasks, but would take a lot of energy out of him. He is pretty complex and that what I like about him, also there’s so very few manga panels where he doesn’t look amazing, like the art is just lovely and doesn’t really do him wrong. How? No matter how tiny- he just is

I’ve always likes “evil because why not.” Not everything stems from reason, and logic sometimes doesn’t apply at all. Muzan, in my opinion, does have a complex story behind himself, but it’s also fair to think he does things because he _can._ But the “because I can” reason doesn’t make sense to people who think 100% logically and think there should be motivation behind one’s actions. But to me, it makes sense. Some people are nice because they can be. Some people do a certain job because they can. It doesn’t have to be driven by a motive. Had a singer friend who got into music. She doesn’t hate it, but she doesn’t love it. She only did it “because she can.”

A God complex in itself is such a scary trait to play off of on it's own. He abandoned any morality he could have had, only because nobody could stop him and he found himself above having to make those calls anymore. It's not too often you get vanilla villains like him anymore, to avoid the stereotype.

Honestly it’s impossible to find a villain nowadays that you don’t need a majors degree in mathematics to solve their backstory and why they became a villain so I love the simple idea that Muzan wanted to live as long as he could and is willing to do anything to achieve his goal including murder. For example: some random villain: best friends with the protagonist, looses entire family, depression arc, tries to recover from depression arc, protagonist ultimately screws over the poor guy/gal and leaves them to rot, major villaining and murder arc, protagonist apologizes, redemption arc. It’s so complex compared to: “I’m pissed because I can’t walk in the sun and I eat people for nutrients” 🕺🏻😈

I don't think he's a boring character at all. At first, I thought he did because he was one of those villains that just had so much power, the heroes always lost. But the more I watched, the more I realized he was actually scared of them. Maybe if he did have a sad backstory, then people may like him more as a villain. He quite literally sat there and killed all his lower moons, and then just killed a crap ton of people for the fun of it. I personally love villains that are just there for the ride, and are pure evil. Which in theory why Muzan and Douma are my favorites. (After Alaza of couse)

I think that you can have a character just be evil for evils sake and be well beloved (like Malficent, Cruella, etc) and that applies to Muzan as well. But as you say most people who watch anime are used to a complex story for the villian. Sometimes i think a character just being evil because he could is fun if you do it right. Sometimes Muzan can get boring just because hes contastantly threatining everyone and more or less throwing his weight around. With other unabashedly evil charcaters they have fun with what they do or always manage to capture that scaringly evil aspect and still be loved. Its just a matter of writing ig

I feel like this is a problem for most demon slayer characters though. Gotoge (the author) had to rush demon slayer midway because of family issues and problem in their personal life so most characters became sort of one demential. Nezuko had so much potential as a main character but she pretty much got sidelined to only be a “tool” for Tanjiro to win in a fight he had trouble with. Himegima, Giyuu, Kanae, Kanao and so many others became just plot points with only one personality trait. It sucks having characters with such complex back stories be so boring :(

Your idea about the complex reasonings for villains actions is what every other demon gets. The original demon doesn't need a reason because everyone else is complex in backstory. I think he's fine as a villain but feels really distant at the minute because the kabuki are more pressing
