Interesting video. I have just got a set of these so it is very timely. I don't have your skill but I can get a nice painterly effect in a simple sketch. Another advantage is their portability - just a small tin, a sketchbook and a water brush 👍

I agree about their portability, great for outdoor sketching.

Love water soluble graphite! My favorite pencils are the Caran d ache - I started with a set of 5, then added to it..also have the brand that sells it in a little round tin, but I use the pencils more. Especially love working with water soluble graphite on Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper, which has a velvety sanded texture.

Great video pointing out the pros and cons. Would love to see how you would go about doing the same project in both mediums - regular graphite and water soluble graphite - a side by side comparison. Ty.

Thanks. Yes that would be interesting.

It is an interesting medium. I experimented with it when they first came out & hoped to use them as a value study underpainting with watercolor over. Alas, I did not follow through to the conclusion. 🤷🏻♀️ Unfortunately, once they’ve been wetted & dried, they are permanent & cannot be erased. Be sure to complete the drawing before adding water. Great to see you again & so happy I’m getting notifications!!! 😆

I didn't initially like the medium when I tried it years ago, but I have to say it's growing on me, and I'm enjoying using it. You're right, you can't erase it, but it will lighten a little bit if you scrub with the eraser. Great to hear you're still getting the notifications!

@ - Have you put other mediums over it? I’d be curious to see those results. Still not able to partake; hopefully someday.

@@Victoria-c4n In the past I've put ink and watercolour over it when I was experimenting, but haven't got anything to show.

@@smoothie77drawingpainting - Thanks for answering… pen & watercolor is my favorite! Was thinking a water graphite might make it easier for expressing values with watercolors & hopefully more dimensional. If/when I ever get to ‘play’ again, I’ll send the results to you.

@@Victoria-c4n I'll look forward to that! I hope the day when you get to have fun with your art materials again comes sooner than later 🙏

I like the sketch reference but think I will try it in regular graphite

Yes, it will work just as well, if not better in regular graphite, Happy Drawing!
