i used methods like grids to draw portraits and yes it is useful but the loomis method really helped me to understand shapes and anatomy of face much better than the grid. really helpful. now i automatically draw a circle and use the loomis method whenever i draw portraits.

Had a book by Andrew Loomis, this was simply titled; How To Draw. "Had", because for some reason a "so called" friend borrowed it, and it hasn't been returned. It was given to me by my late uncle way back then. - A really wonderful book, had a pencil sketch of his daughter, amazingly done. Andrew Loomis, a very talented artist. Here, he teaches us about basic shapes, human anatomy & perspectives. - I'm subscribed because you learned well from using the Loomis method... Nice work, well done 👍 Q: Do they still sell his books? Coz for those eager to learn, i encourage you to get one. For those who already have it, please do use it & cherish it. Because the work done here is proof that it works!🙂

One of the forms of the face that is often too dark is the filtrum (the mini half-pipe above the lip). If you squint your eyes on the photo, you’ll notice it’s much fainter than what you drew. Also the left eye has a different shape than the other because we are seeing it from a totally different angle than the other one. The bottom of the eyelid dips down more and the inner corner of that eye is completely covered by the nose (that nose edge is probably the darkest and sharpest edge of the whole portrait)

In Andrew Loomis method. I have always have this confusion can u clear?! 1. How do we decide the small oval circle diameter and because it usually starts by ear top..but end based on different face shapes..so can't decide diameter of oval... 2. Eye brows distance.... left eye brow of her because that decide the eye size etc. These make me not to follow this method perfectly Please clear if I'm wrong🙄😶 This two can be drawn without circles also after lot of practice

You can always measure the oval size from reference i prefer using a divider to measure, the same can be done with every other facial features

I understand that this method is a useful tool but i also feel like it's a bit cold, calculated and mathematic. It stifles my creativity a bit and turns drawing into more tedious, structured work. Kinda ruins my flow state sometimes. But i'm still learning it to attemot to gain knowledge and better skill. But it's tough for me personally.

Why does the Loomis method with measurements feels like tracing except it takes more time and with extra steps 😂 I'm amazed by artists who can draw portraits live and their drawing looks accurate too without using measurements, I've always wondered how some people can just eyeball things and draw it out accurately
