Haichie Like my character; He’s 5’7, Left handed and footed. He walks with a sort of a slouch and he has bad posture. Whenever I do a reference sheet, I make sure to include him slouching and standing straight. It’s better for more exact reference

**Cough cough** *Gorillaz* **Cough cough* No seriously, there’s literally no consistency between heights Take two characters 2D and Murdoc for example. Murdoc is around 5’7 and 2D is 6’3. However, when they’re next to each other they’re commonly around the same height, Murdoc sometimes even seeming larger than 2D. Their heights are so drastically different that I’m surprised that they can be drawn anywhere close to each other in the official band’s artwork.

This is a really valuable video. I'm a professional writer, but for years I've been wanting to make a comic and combine my writing with my drawing hobby. I had a premise and some rough character designs already figured out, even a few stories, but it seemed so daunting to actually go about developing it. This gives me some clear ways to get organized and ultimately prove to myself that I can do the art side of it. What's stopped me all this time was concerns about actually making my characters do what they need to do in my stories. I probably should've figured this out already, but it makes so much sense. I just need to make model sheets. Finally, a kick in the behind to actually do productive work and get started on this idea I've had.
@mommy-mar Жыл бұрын
Ooh! It’s been three years. Have you published your comic somewhere or have you changed your mind and directed your talents elsewhere? If you’ve already made the comic I’d love to check it out. :)
@fakecubed Жыл бұрын
@@mommy-mar Ended up learning 3D modeling instead, in Blender. Plus, a hundred other writing projects that have taken my attention. I am almost at the point now where I can make my character models in 3D with clean topology, render them with cartoon shading (actually have a lot of those shaders and techniques worked out), and make my comic that way instead of drawing them. It’ll look drawn, but it’ll be a very flexible way of doing things. I could also do animation relatively easily. Not all the pieces are in place, however. I still need to model and rig my characters, and rigging is still something I don’t have a lot of experience with so still some more things to learn. But ultimately I think it’s the workflow that will get me the results I want and in a pretty quick pace so I could keep a comic going regularly without it becoming a full time job. A lot of time investment up front but once I’ve got my digital assets it’ll be smooth sailing and I can just focus on writing it. I might still draw backgrounds by hand in 2D, just have the characters as posable 3D models to speed things up and maintain a consistent look. Three years ago, I did draw out my characters in a formal way, iterated on the designs a bit. Translating those to 3D, so they render looking like their 2D designs, that will be an adventure. A couple of them I may want to revisit. Check back on me in another three years, and maybe I’ll have started the comic by then. I wrote a bunch of scripts though, most of the world building is in notes, got some general outlines for a bunch of other chapters. Who knows, I’ve been developing the comic since probably 2008 or 2007. It may be more than three more years before I finally publish. But I’m not really working on it currently. It’s a back burner project for me, something I think about from time to time. It was good to be reminded of it by your comment, actually. Thank you. I may try and focus on learning some rigging skills because of that in the near future. Right now I have another big writing project that’s taking up most of my creative juices and requires a substantial amount of research. But I’m often playing around with Blender.

Model sheets are fun! Something I've noticed more and more as I cross between mediums is that the final product in one medium becomes the reference in another. Models are a way of summarizing the things you need to reference the most for animation, but the model usually comes after doing concepts, and the concepts might come from a story idea, which in turn might have come from some general themes and research. Just like how it never totally matters that your lines are perfect, it never totally matters that any one part of the process has been nailed down, just that you can put it in some kind of healthy iterative cycle that develops the concepts farther. A reason to go for T-pose or its common relatives A-pose and star-pose, is if you want the model sheet to be transferred into a 3D package directly. 3D animation rigs prefer having the base be "in between" the extremes so that things don't stretch too much which is why these poses have become common. The modelling process is most straightforward when you can put your references into your 3D view and essentially trace the outlines, because then all your effort can go to technical details like the topology, so it often works out that the model sheets in 2D will start in these poses too.

Hello! I just finished your Webcomic on this cute witch and I don't know if you'll see this but I would like you to know that I really love your character designs. I mean the skulls on the puffy sleeves on her dress? That's genius ♥

2:29 "They'll be consistent within this episode" once i saw an episode of su where between a shot reverse shot Pearl's nose went from a more dorito like shape, to an incicle shape. 😐

This is really helpful! I often find myself looking back at my previous drawing of a character in order to draw them again, and it would be a lot easier to just have a reference sheet nearby:)

I have no consistency in my character drawings. It's mostly the hair and the specific eyeshape that trips me up

THANK YOU FOR THIS! I've been considering starting to learn animation so this really helped me and I am going to be making model sheets for my characters too! >U
@aliak530i5 жыл бұрын
Traditionally, the model sheets go in this order, Front, 3/4 Front, Side, 3/4 back, Back. The purpose of model sheets is to know the characters inside out. It's better if you know the importance of 3/4 view for a model sheets. It's basically a view that doesn't look flat and help hide mistake because you're giving them the angled view.

Aaaaah this is the main thing I struggle when drawing comics 😭

Don't worry about it just draw when you draw the characters a bit differently from shot to shot that isn't so bad you are getting better at drawing your Characters they will always look slightly different over time. The real challenge is drawing other people's charcaters.

I love to do this all the time for my own charcaters for fun. I'm a geek. Funny thing I am working on one right now for Animation class.

Thanks Lavender! I have been trying for months to master this, but with exams coming and so little time, I have been having problems with character models and finding my style and with my teacher's not -so-constructive criticism that I draw too anime like and not realistic enough...I am stressing out and it's the week before my final exams... I have seen one of you videos that talks about finding your style, but the pressure on me is making me lose focus and the frustration is really tearing me down...I can,t digitally draw a ref sheet because my computer charger isn't working and my tablet cord is frayed, so I have to do everything by hand and I lost some sleep over it... But, other than that...by on the video. ^^

You should do anime girls being turned in your style! E.g. Yandere-Chan, Sailor moon, Voilet...

Your Character reminds me of Marisa from Touhou :) Not that I'm accusing you of 'copying' or something stupid, but I just like the style of clothing.
