It is amazing how many people today have no idea that Elvis grew up in abject poverty in a Black community in Tupelo, Mississippi. He absolutely knew what poverty and hunger was. It is said that Elvis was an extremely generous and thoughtful man, he never forgot what it was like as a child of poverty. We all must understand that poverty does not know color.

I hope you read your comments because you’ll learn a lot from us older ones who grew up listening to Elvis. The first time I heard this song, I was a little kid, playing outside. Someone had a radio and it came on. I got the same shivers you did when I heard it. Then, I cried and cried. It was like he was singing my life. The song still makes me shiver. I was 7 when i first heard the song, and I had the same exact physiological reaction listening to the song. I remember it so vividly too. My auntie lived in Memphis, and every summer i would go down there and stay with her during the summer. She took me to Graceland for the first time, and for my birthday she got me the Elvis 30 greatest hits CD from the Elvis store across from Graceland. And as soon as we got back to her house I immediately went upstairs to play the CD. Once In the Ghetto came on and i listened to it, I just remember getting goosebumps and felt like a shiver was sent down my back while i was laying on the floor in the heat of the summer in Memphis. Having the opportunity to go to Graceland and Sun Studios and literally be physically immersed in a place in which so much world renowned talent and ground breaking history took place at and then my 7 year old brain trying to take in and process everything I just experienced that day while listening to his music and that song coming on literally changed and shaped my life from that day on. Im 27 now and in the ghetto still brings shivers to my spine and passion in my heart.

Yes Elvis grew up in poverty. He was a twin but the other baby didn’t make it. He was very aware of the hardships in life at an early age. This song came out in 1969 and he wanted to bring awareness!! Everytime I hear this song I ball my eyes out; it speaks to my soul!!

Elvis was different, and his perspective was different than great majority of the white people in the South, during that time period. Elvis grew up in the poorest parts of the South during the Great Depression and Segregation. And he understood the lowest depths of poverty. Only 4 white families on his block, he lived and played with black children while living in a 1 room shotgun house (shack) with a porch, and without electricity. How poor was Elvis? His twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley was born about 30 minutes before Elvis. Sadly, he was still born. The Presleys were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox. He was laid to rest in Priceville Memorial Gardens in Tupelo. The great legends of color in his era: BB King - Jackie Wilson - James Brown were there to witness Elvis‘ creativity. He was a one-of-a-kind super talent that grew up in the black community during the great depression and segregation in the deep South. His support for the civil rights movement is not known by the greater population in America. Clearly a terribly racist time Elvis put poverty and racial socialization on his platform. But he did it all through Music and his behind the scenes actions alone. He never got political I think that’s what actually made him so powerful and able to succeed. BB KING: 'Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism', The King of the Blues, B.B. King said in 2010. 'With Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. Most white men in the south disagreed with him or was jealous of him. 99% of white people male or female during his day or even today had/have no idea how he grew up and why he felt the way he did. Growing up in predominantly Southern black neighborhoods named Shakerag and Beale Street during the Great Depression, in a shotgun home/shack with no electric, puts him in a very small company. How many families (white or black) had to bury a stillborn twin in a shoe box? Thats the kind of poverty thats rare and then to feel for black people as a white kid in that era and location? He was the first to break segregation laws in Memphis. I stick to my 99%.

My sister, friend & I had front row seats & had several women behind us who were jealous because he kissed all 3 of us. He came up to me at our hometown country club in our "19th Hole" bar, after he and his band played a round of golf. The local club members were all around him and his band members so he politely excused himself and walked up to the bar to order a drink. As he waited, he noticed me standing off to the side, in my ugly gold jacket (ugh), waiting to serve water to anyone in need. He then just started talking to me, as pleasant as anyone you've ever met. ~ Sadly, I never got to attend one of his concerts.

Elvis recorded over 700 songs in his life you havent even begun to scratch the surface -, he started out growing up dirt poor in tupelo mississippi singing in black churches and many of his songs have a gospel feel. Theres a reason he was nicknamed the king, his voice sounded like no other and his shows were always entertaining.

The sad part and as this song eludes to that same Ghetto situation exists in Chicago and other cities today. Why? Because far to many of us have "turned our heads and looked the other way". Elvis did grow up in the ghetto. He learned his music through a combination of rhythm of blues, country, and western. It was a mix of the best of the best. When he first started all the commotion surrounding his way of displaying, his music was to dance really through the waist down. They wanted to have his music pulled off the shelves and rock ‘n’ roll be destroyed. But that never happened as you can see, he is the top selling artist in the world. I’m 62 years old. I’ve been an Elvis fan for 60 years. I remember hearing them for the first time on television yes black-and-white great big old tank of a TV but I thought to myself. wow I love this music, anyway, my recommendations for music for you to listen to my favourite of all time. American trilogy. Aloha from Hawaii 1973 album. I would love to see the look on your face when you hear him hit the notes that he can hit. Oh Elvis was a beautiful soul . I was lucky I got too see Elvis in 1972 my first concert . Elvis grew up very poor . He was born in a one room home in Tupelo Mississippi . When his dad got out of prison for forgery of a 5.00 dollar check he moved them to Memphis Tennessee. They lived in a the projects there he said at one time they would have no food and a neighborhood lady would feed the family . Elvis never forgot where he came from . You have to listen to his Suspicious Minds Live in Las Vegas , his If I Can Dream in his White Outfit Live 68 comeback special . Kentucky Rain , Rubbernecking , Jailhouse Rock so many to watch . I would watch as many lives shows you can to see and feel the real Elvis . There is also a short documentary called Elvis and the Black Community That Echo Will Never Die it’s a must .

When E first played the International Hotel in Las Vegas, the management took issue with the fact his backing singers were Black to the point that they were happy with Elvis coming thru the front door but his backing singers come in thru the back door. Elvis said "My girls go thru the same door I do or I ain't comin'"

So did he, so he knows, and he was brave enough to sing this in public. He grew up in a 2 room shack on the border of a black Ghetto in Tupelo Mississippi. He went to black churches and sang in the choir in one, he grew up with nothing and never forgot it, he supported a lot of charities and gave a lot of money and his possessions away. He was a beautiful human being inside and out, who's fame and prescription drugs to cope with it killed him in the end at the age of 42. THE KING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE KING ❤️

I was about 6 years old when Elvis died. I watched my Mom weep. Everyone in my family cried as the reality set in that a true talent was gone. I am also from MS and we are so proud of Elvis, Muddy Watters, BB King, and the many talented artists from here. Yes, Elvis was truly a man of the people and performed songs from his heart. He was ahead of his time both musically and on a social justice front. He was also very easy on the eyes ;)

I used to sit and listen to his records and I would play the song over and over when I was a little kid. I would start crying. It touched my heart so deeply. When you have time please listen to If I Can Dream. And Unchained Melody. Or one of the earlier ones when he was very young old Shep. And of course and of course for fun romantic surrender. Elvis had a three octave range. The movies he did were because the colonel had him do them he didn't want to do the silly teeny bopper movies, he wanted to get back to some of the serious ones like King Creole or Jailhouse Rock. He was offered the role in a star is born with Barbra Streisand but his manager the colonel blew that for him. He started recording stuff he cared about in 1968. He was deeply affected by Martin Luther King's assassination. After that 68 come back to her he decided to do songs that matter to him. There's a lot of them. Thank you for your review. By the way yes Elvis grew up in the projects he moved from one project house to an apartment building in the projects so yes Elvis did grow up in the ghetto. his father went to jail and his mom struggled and they lived in abstract poverty. I am 53 and I have been an Elvis fan since my teens. I love watching young people react to old music and seeing them light up with the realization that it was better than anything that they expected. Keep an open mind and keep exploring there is a wealth of music just waiting for you to enjoy it. This is one of my favorite Elvis songs but as others have said he has a vast catalogue of music to keep you busy for quite some time.
